:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Ahmadinejad Vows News Soon on Atomic Work
-Full Story-

Iran's president promised on Sunday Iranians would soon hear more news about the Islamic Republic's nuclear program, which the West believes is a covert effort to build atomic bombs despite Tehran's denials.

"The Iranian nation will soon hear fresh news about our country's nuclear transition," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying.

He did not give details about any announcements or when the news would be released but Ahmadinejad is due to hold a news conference on Tuesday.

Rocket expert accused of theft (Australian Army Captain accused of stealing rocket launchers)
news.com.au ^ | 5th April 2007

Posted on 04/04/2007 9:56:49 PM PDT by naturalman1975

An Australian army captain is the alleged mastermind of the theft and sale of eight defence force rocket launchers, police say.

The Australian Federal Police and New South Wales Police Force now say eight, not seven, anti-tank weapons were stolen from the military.

Police today arrested two men, aged 46 and 39, from Wattle Grove and Mount Annan, in Sydney’s southwest, and a 63-year-old woman from Tahmoor, south-west of Sydney, in simultaneous police raids about 6am (AEST) today.

NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Terry Collins said the 46-year-old man was an army captain who worked closely with munitions.

“We will allege that a captain in the defence force was a mastermind and a key player in regard to the theft and distribution of these (rocket launchers) to criminal elements in the community,” Mr Collins said.

“We will allege the captain had intimate knowledge and had worked very closely in the area where he had access to those type of weapons.”

Persecution on the Increase in India

From Gospel for Asia
For Immediate Release

Anti-Christian extremists often beat up Christians. This Bible college student was attacked as he was out telling people about Jesus.

INDIA (ANS) — Persecution of Christians appears to be increasing in scope and intensity in India. During one recent 24-hour period, Gospel for Asia correspondents reported three serious incidents of persecution that clearly demonstrate the increased boldness of anti-Christian extremists in the country.

“As the Nazis in Germany believed that the Jewish race must be eradicated—which led to the brutal killing of 6 million innocent Jewish people, the Hindu religion’s extremists are determined to do all they can to hurt those who believe and follow Christ,” said GFA President K.P. Yohannan. “These minority extremists don’t represent India nor the sentiments of the Hindu majority of the land.”

These extremists consistently accuse Christians of forcibly converting people to Christianity. The extremists say that Christians use “allurement” to convince people to receive Jesus as their Savior. This is often the accusation when the conversion comes after a healing. However, in most cases, the people come to the missionaries requesting prayer for healing.

The extremists are very concerned about the growing number of people leaving the Hindu religion, which is viewed by many as the official religion of India. Many people say that “to be Indian is to be Hindu.” Leaders in the anti-Christian movement contend they are simply maintaining a cohesive Indian society by ensuring that Hinduism remains the country’s chief religion.

No matter the reason, these recent reports of persecution are clear indicators that preaching the Gospel and following Christ are dangerous propositions for the people of India.

Students attacked in Punjab

On March 26, about 40 anti-Christian extremists attacked a group of 15 students who live and study in a Gospel for Asia-related home Bible school in Punjab, in northwest India. The 40 extremists, who are all reported to be teenagers, beat up the students. Thirteen of the students fled to a nearby GFA-affiliated church, and two ran back to their homes to escape the extremists.

The students have been actively involved in sharing the Gospel with people in the village where the Bible school is located. The extremists saw what they were doing and warned them to stop. The students continued to share the Gospel and pray for the people in the village, which angered the youths.

The students were eventually able to return to their home after the attacks. Their Bible school teacher asks that Christians around the world would pray that his students would not lose heart and that they would remain bold in their calling.

Believers, pastor, persecuted in Jharkhand

Gospel for Asia missionary Prakash Ramteki was attacked on March 18 as he walked home from a nearby village where he had been ministering to the people. Prakesh’s attackers accused him of forcibly converting the people to Christianity. He sustained injuries to his head and hands, and was hospitalized following the attack.

Christians in India form strong bonds of love with one another when they face persecution.

The attackers also stole Prakesh’s cell phone and Bible, and warned him never to return to the village. Prakesh must return to that village because he pastors a church there. Each week he conducts Sunday services, and stays in the village Monday to conduct a Bible study and visit people in the area.

Attacks on missionaries have unfortunately become all too common, and now believers are increasingly coming under attack, too. Deepti Pradhan was a Hindu woman who received Jesus as her Savior. Her oldest son, Janardin, also chose to follow Christ. Their decision became a source of tension within their family, and the tension soon spread out into their village in Jharkhand.

Hindu extremists who live there led a charge to harass Deepti and Janardin. They even tried to keep them from attending church. In spite of the harassment, the mother and son continued to follow Jesus and seek after Him.

The villagers increased the attacks, going after the family’s livelihood by cutting down some of their trees and preventing them from cultivating their rice paddy and vegetable plants. This put the family in a severe crisis situation.

The extremists became even bolder and broke into the family’s home, chasing out Deepti and all three of her sons. The family found refuge in Pastor Masudan Singh’s home that night.

On March 25, the extremists disrupted a worship service at the Gospel for Asia-affiliated church that Deepti and Janardin attend. They accused Pastor Masudan of forcible conversions of Hindus to Christianity, and told him to leave the church and the village. They also planned to put the believers through a program to “reconvert” them to Hinduism. The believers stood together, protected their pastor and refused to participate in the conversion back to Hinduism.

Jharkhand is ruled by the Hindu political party, which has unsuccessfully tried to put an anti-conversion law in place. The bill was voted down in 2006, but it is expected to reappear.

gFA leaders in that area ask for prayer specifically for Prakesh, that he would recover from his injuries, and that God would provide all his needs and bless his ministry abundantly. They also ask for prayer for Deepti, Janardin and the other believers in pastor Masudan’s church, that the Lord would protect them and that the extremists would come to know Jesus as their Savior.

“We cannot be silent nor ignore what is happening to our brothers and sisters in the body of Christ in India,” Yohannan said. “We must pray and fast for God to intervene and bring about a heart change and give boldness to His people to love and proclaim the Good News in the midst of persecution.”

“Gaza Net cafe owners seek protection”
By KHALED ABU TOAMEH

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Owners of Internet cafes in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday appealed to Palestinian Authority security forces to take tough measures to stop recurring attacks on their businesses.

The appeal was made after unidentified assailants detonated explosive charges inside an Internet cafe in the town of Jabalya in the northern Gaza Strip. No one was hurt in the pre-dawn attack, but the place was completely damaged, witnesses told The Jerusalem Post.

Wednesday’s attack was the third of its kind in less than a week and the 48th in the past five months. In addition, a number of shops selling cassettes, DVDs and CDs have been targeted.

PA security sources said the attacks were the work of a radical Islamic group that began operating in the Gaza Strip last year. The group, which calls itself Swords of Islamic Righteousness, is believed to be an offshoot of al-Qaida.

Its members have also claimed responsibility for assaults on women whom they accused of being dressed immodestly.”

I could pretend I’m shocked, but I’m not.

All Pelosi proved was that she can be a more than a domestic screw-up; now we know she is a global screw-up.

“Pelosi Delivered Wrong Message to Assad, Israel Says”
By Julie Stahl
CNSNews.com Jerusalem Bureau Chief
April 05, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Jerusalem (CNSNews.com) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi delivered the wrong message to Syrian President Bashar Assad from Israel, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s office said on Wednesday evening.

Pelosi, who is heading a bi-partisan fact-finding tour of the Middle East, met with Assad on Wednesday, a move that angered the Bush administration. Earlier in the week, Pelosi — the most senior U.S. official to visit Syria in years — visited Israel and met with Olmert.

At a press conference following the meeting between Pelosi and Assad in Damascus, Pelosi indicated that she had delivered a message that Israel was ready to engage in peace talks.

“We were very pleased with the reassurances we received from the president [Assad] that he was ready to resume the peace process. He was ready to engage in negotiations for peace with Israel,” Pelosi said.

The meeting with Assad “enabled us to communicate a message from Prime Minister Olmert that Israel was ready to engage in peace talks as well,” she said.

But the prime minister’s office denied that Olmert had asked her to communicate such a message in a “clarification” statement issued on Wednesday evening.”

“Report: Iranian Envoy to Meet With 5 Iranians Being Held by U.S. in Iraq”
Wednesday, April 04, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s state media reported Wednesday that an Iranian envoy will be allowed to meet five Iranians detained by U.S. forces in northern Iraq since January — a possible sign of further progress toward ending a British-Iranian standoff.

The report appeared as Britain and Iran were entering a sensitive phase in the efforts to free 15 British sailors and marines captured by the Iranians last month in disputed waters of the Persian Gulf.

A separate Iranian diplomat seized two months ago by uniformed gunmen in Iraq was released and returned Tuesday to Tehran. Iran had blamed the U.S. for the abduction, a charge American authorities denied.

The detention of the five other Iranians occurred in January in Irbil, the capital of the Kurdish self-governing region in northern Iraq. Iraqi Kurds, like the country’s Shiites, maintain close ties with Shiite-dominated Iran, despite their warm relationship with the U.S. — and they had been upset over the arrests in their own capital.

Iraq’s Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, himself a Kurd, told The Associated Press that the case of the five detained Iranians had no connection with that of the British sailors and marines.”

Travel Warning
United States Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Washington, DC 20520

This information is current as of today, Thu Apr 05 2007 04:50:38 GMT-0700.

AFGHANISTAN

April 4, 2007

This Travel Warning provides updated information on the security situation in Afghanistan. The security threat to all American citizens in Afghanistan remains critical. This Travel Warning supersedes the Travel Warning for Afghanistan issued June 22, 2006.

The Department of State continues to strongly warn U.S. citizens against travel to Afghanistan. There is an ongoing threat to kidnap and assassinate U.S. citizens and Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) workers throughout the country. The ability of Afghan authorities to maintain order and ensure the security of citizens and visitors is limited. Remnants of the former Taliban regime and the terrorist al-Qa’ida network, and other groups hostile to the Afghan and U.S. governments, remain active. NATO-led military operations continue, with the heavy involvement of U.S. forces. Travel in all areas of Afghanistan, including the capital, Kabul, is unsafe due to military operations, landmines, banditry, armed rivalry among political and tribal groups, and the possibility of terrorist attacks, including attacks using vehicular or other improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The security environment remains volatile and unpredictable. No part of Afghanistan should be considered immune from violence, and the potential exists throughout the country for hostile acts, either targeted or random, against American and other western nationals at any time.

Attacks on international organizations, international aid workers, and foreign interests have continued since June 2006. The number of attacks in the south and southwestern areas of the country continues to increase as a result of insurgent and drug-related activity. There were more than 130 suicide bomber and vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs) attacks throughout the country in 2006. Kabul was particularly hard hit by militant attacks, such as several detonations of a remote-controlled IED and VBIED on Jalalabad Road, a suicide bomber attack upon a U.S. military convoy near Massoud Circle and the U.S. Embassy compound, a body-borne IED detonation against an ISAF convoy traveling to Kabul International Airport, and a magnetic bomb explosion in the vicinity of the Intercontinental Hotel in western Kabul. These incidents resulted in many deaths and injuries of U.S. and coalition personnel and local civilians.

Incidents have occurred with higher frequency on the Kabul-Jalalabad Road (commonly called Jalalabad Road) since June 2006. Because of an increase in information over the past several months about potential attacks on this road, its use is highly restricted for Embassy employees and, if the security situation warrants, sometimes is curtailed completely.

Since mid-2006 foreigners throughout the country continued to be targeted for violent attacks and kidnappings, whether motivated by terrorism or criminality. A Pakistani construction contractor in Zabul province was kidnapped and a Colombian NGO employee in Wardak province disappeared; neither has been found. Two German journalists were kidnapped and killed while traveling between Baghlan and Bamiyan provinces. An Italian journalist was abducted from a public bus traveling between Lashkar Gah and Kandahar and held by gunmen for three weeks. Two Pakistani journalists were kidnapped in Helmand province and held for six days. Two French citizens traveling in a taxi on the main highway between Kandahar and Kabul were victims of an attempted abduction.

Riots and incidents of civil disturbance also have occurred several times since the beginning of 2006, and the risk remains that such episodes may happen at any time with no warning. American citizens should avoid rallies and demonstrations; even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.

Carjackings, robberies, and violent crime remain a problem. In December, several armed men dressed as Afghan National Police officers set up illegal checkpoints within the district of Surobi, in eastern Kabul on Jalalabad Road. The perpetrators robbed several drivers and shot and killed a truck driver. American citizens involved in property disputes — a common legal problem — have reported that their adversaries in the disputes have threatened their lives. Americans who find themselves in such situations cannot assume that either local law enforcement or the U.S. Embassy will be able to assist them.

Official Americans assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Kabul are not permitted to have family members reside in Afghanistan. In addition, unofficial travel to Afghanistan by U.S. Government employees and their family members requires prior approval by the Department of State. From time to time depending on current security conditions, the U.S. Embassy places areas frequented by foreigners off limits to its personnel. Potential target areas include key national or international government establishments, international organizations and other locations with expatriate personnel, and public areas popular with the expatriate community. Private U.S. citizens are strongly urged to heed these restrictions as well and may obtain the latest information by calling the U.S. Embassy in Kabul or consulting the embassy website below. Terrorist actions may include, but are not limited to, suicide operations, bombings, assassinations, carjackings, rocket attacks, assaults or kidnappings. Possible threats include conventional weapons such as explosive devises or non-conventional weapons, including chemical or biological agents.

The United States Embassy’s ability to provide emergency consular services to U.S. citizens in Afghanistan is limited, particularly for those persons outside the capital. Afghan authorities also can provide only limited assistance to U.S. citizens facing difficulties. U.S. citizens who choose to visit or remain in Afghanistan despite this Travel Warning are urged to pay close attention to their personal safety, security and health needs and are expected to assume primary responsibility for such. They are also encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy through the State Department’s travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov, and to obtain updated information on travel and security within Afghanistan. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the U.S. Embassy. Registering makes it easier for the Embassy to contact Americans in case of emergency. The U.S. Embassy is located at Great Masood Road between Radio Afghanistan and the Ministry of Public Health (the road is also known as Bebe Mahro (Airport) Road), Kabul.
