WASHINGTON, April 24, 2007
MINSK, April 24 (Itar-Tass) - Two Belarussian citizens have been detained on the Lithuanian border on suspicion of radioactive contraband, a source at the Belarussian Interior Ministry said on Tuesday. A metal container with a caption Uranium 238. 1991 was found on their car.
The detention was made in a joint operation of the Belarussian Interior Ministrys Main Department on Organized Crime and Corruption and the Lithuanian Criminal Police Bureau assisted by the two border services. The operation was planned for several months.
The detainees are staying in Lithuania, Belarussian Interior Ministry spokesman Yekaterina Samusenkova-Shelegova said. The Vilnius district prosecutors office is holding pre-trial investigation, and the seized cargo is being studied at the Lithuanian Radiation Safety Center.

Box with radioactive material seized on Lithuania-Belarus border
April 24, 2007
VILNIUS, Lithuania: A metal box containing radioactive material was seized on the border with Belarus, Lithuanian officials said Tuesday.
Vilnius city prosecutors said that two Belarusian citizens were detained on Sunday after border police discovered a container hidden in their car as they tried to cross from Lithuania into Belarus. Police did not specify what materials were seized, saying only that the container was marked with the Russian word for "uranium". A metal capsule discovered inside was taken to a laboratory for examination, police said.
After a preliminary inquiry, two men were arrested for attempting to smuggle illegal radioactive material. The suspects may be held up to one month according to a court order issued Tuesday.

Forces Detain Terrorists; Car Bombs Kill Iraqis
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, April 24, 2007 Coalition forces detained 10 suspected terrorists in Iraq today, and three Iraqi civilians and six policemen were killed and 49 people were injured in car bomb attacks yesterday and today, military officials reported.
Coalition forces detained 10 suspected terrorists and uncovered a cache of weapons in several operations in central Iraq today.
Three coordinated coalition forces raids apprehended 10 individuals suspected of operating with al Qaeda in Iraq and facilitating foreign fighters southeast of Fallujah.
In Baghdad, coalition forces discovered a weapons cache containing rockets, mortars, terrorist propaganda and improvised explosive device-making materials. Explosive ordnance disposal teams neutralized the cache.
“We will continue to work diligently to eliminate foreign terrorists, who are killing innocent Iraqis every day and destabilizing the country,” said Army Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, Multinational Force Iraq spokesman.
Elsewhere, three civilians were killed and 36 were injured after two suicide bombers detonated their vehicles in western Ramadi today.
The first attack occurred after two trucks approached the Huriyah police station. The lead vehicle exploded near the entrance at 1:18 p.m., causing a nearby house to collapse, killing three civilians and injuring 31, including five policemen.
“Two trucks came around the corner; the lead truck exploded, and the second truck sped away,” an Iraqi police officer who was at the Huriyah police station said.
About 15 minutes later, two kilometers southwest of the first attack, a sedan exploded near a restaurant in the 5-Kilo district, injuring five.
Yesterday, a car bomb detonated at an Iraqi police checkpoint near Diyala’s provincial council headquarters, killing six policemen on site and wounding 13 more, one of whom died later.
“This will not deter the work of the honorable and dedicated (people) to bring about security, peace and prosperity,” said Diyala Gov. Raad Hameed al-Mula Jowad al-Tamimi, who said he condemns the criminal and cowardly acts by the terrorists.
Although a provincial council meeting was about to begin, the target of the attack is unknown since the vehicle detonated as the Iraqi police were directing traffic, allowing a coalition forces convoy to pass through the checkpoint unhindered.
“The provincial council, who was meeting to discuss the 2007 provincial budget, continued their meeting despite the attack,” said Army Col. David W. Sutherland, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division commander and senior U.S. Army officer in Diyala. “The council members refuse to be intimidated or swayed by this attack, realizing security and stability for the people is necessary.”
Iraqi army and police were on site immediately to execute emergency procedures and secure the area. Nine of the wounded Iraqi police were transferred to a coalition force medical facility for treatment. The additional policemen were transferred to Baqouba General Hospital.
“The responsiveness of the Iraqi army and police was critical in today’s attack, as it prevented the death of local citizens and possibly, government officials,” Sutherland said. “Their quick response shows the increasing progress of their forces and their desire to protect the people of Diyala.”

NIIGATA (Kyodo) Hundreds of mostly Pakistani Muslims are forming communities in the Sea of Japan prefectures of Niigata and Toyama, thriving in businesses linked to exports of secondhand cars to Russia and the Middle East.
"Here is Little Pakistan," joked one Niigata resident. "Japanese people need a visa (to come here). I don't have a chance to talk to any Japanese." The man said he lives, works and eats in a restaurant in the environs of Higashi port, about 20 km from the heart of the city of Niigata. About 200 Pakistanis work in the port area, where used-car dealers display signboards painted green -- the color of the Pakistani flag. The language spoken is Urdu, but Russians can also be seen bicycling around the district.
Standing silently and inconspicuously behind a factory, a prefabricated mosque without a dome attracts about 100 Muslim men each week for Friday prayers. Chanting words from the Quran, they stand up and bow toward Mecca. They listen to a sermon delivered by Amjad Hassan, 43, an assistant professor at Niigata University who serves as their imam.

Poll Finds Most Muslims Agree With Al-Qaedas Goals
25 April 2007
Most Muslims want US military forces out of the Middle East and Islamic countries and many agree with Al-Qaedas goals, if not its tactics, suggested a public opinion poll conducted in Egypt, Morocco, Pakistan and Indonesia.
Most respondents have mixed feelings about Al-Qaeda, said a statement of the studys findings, conducted by the Washington-based nonprofit group WorldPublicOpinion.org and the University of Maryland. Large majorities agree with many of its goals, but believe that terrorist attacks on civilians are contrary to Islam. An average of 74 percent of all those polled agreed with the goal of push(ing) the US to remove its bases and military forces from all Islamic countries, said the poll.
A full 91 percent of Egyptians and 69 percent of Moroccans said they approved of attacks against US soldiers in Iraq, while 61 percent of Indonesians disapproved. Pakistanis appeared divided on the matter, with 31 percent for such attacks and 33 percent against.
The survey found similar responses with regard to US forces in Afghanistan and the Gulf. At least 70 percent or more in all countries supported the goals of stand(ing) up to Americans and affirm(ing) the dignity of the Islamic people, and pressur(ing) the United States not to favor Israel, it said.
Those polled were asked whether they thought certain ideas were the goals of Al-Qaeda or groups inspired by the Osama Bin Laden-led militant network, and then were asked to what extent they agreed or disagreed, somewhat or strongly, with those goals. Most agreed that Al-Qaeda goals included requiring a strict application of Islamic, or Shariah, law in every Islamic country, pushing US military forces out of all Islamic countries, and keeping Western values out of Islamic countries.

TOLEDO, Ohio - Two cousins from northern Illinois and an Ohio man accused of plotting attacks against American troops overseas met three years ago to talk about training in explosives, guns and sniper tactics, a U.S. Justice Department attorney said Tuesday.
The men gathered at a Muslim convention in Cleveland in July 2004 with a former U.S. military man who worked undercover and helped foil the plot, said Gregg Sofer, a justice department attorney. At the convention, the men talked about a five-year plan to carry out their mission, Sofer said. ``This conversation is nothing short of devastating,'' he said during a detention hearing for Khaleel Amed, of Chicago, and Zubair A. Ahmed, of suburban North Chicago, Ill.
U.S. District Judge James Carr, however, ordered that the cousins be released on bond. The judge said he was compelled to release the men until their trial next January because they had known for a year they and others were under investigation, but did not attempt to flee.

'Pak mosque grooming suicide bombers'
24 Apr, 2007
ISLAMABAD: Islamic students associated with a radical mosque in the Pakistani capital Islamabad have been indoctrinated and trained to mount suicide attacks, a ruling coalition party claimed in a report released on Monday.
A large arsenal of unused weapons from Kalashnikov assault rifles to rocket-propelled grenades has also been amassed at the Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque, and two affiliated madrassa religious schools, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) said after unbiased research. They also think that in case of their martyrdom in suicidal attacks they will be welcomed by hoors (virgins) with garlands in their hands and they will have entry into the heaven without accountability, the partys report said.
Independent witnesses have testified to the presence of automatic weapons on the premises, while members of a terrorist group with a history of bombings have also joined the mosques protectors, according to the report. The MQM this month held a rally of around 100,000 people against violent enforcement of self-defined Islamic laws.
Two Indonesians sentenced in US court for role in arms smuggling conspiracy
April 24, 2007
BALTIMORE: Two Indonesian citizens were sentenced to more than a year in prison Tuesday for their role in a conspiracy to smuggle sophisticated military devices to the Indonesian military, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced.
U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake sentenced Reinhard Rusli, 35, and Helmi Soedirdja, 33, to a year and a day in federal prison after the two men pleaded guilty to attempting to illegally export night vision devices and money laundering. They will be deported after they complete their sentences, prosecutors said.

Six held in anti-terror raids over ‘incitement’
Militant blamed Britain for July 7 bombings
ARTICLE SNIPPET”Few anti-terrorist operations are sparked by intelligence from Britain’s Muslim communities and the flow of information to police and MI5 has to be increased, the UK’s most senior counter-terrorist officer said last night.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke, head of Scotland Yard’s counter-terrorism command, warned there was also a dangerous distrust of the intelligence on which police worked. This was typified by the controversy over the abortive “chemical bomb” raid on a house in east London last summer.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke has called for information
He criticised those who fuelled this distrust by claiming police operations were politically motivated to justify British foreign policy. The public was not being informed of the true nature of the terror threat, said Mr Clarke.
In a speech to the Policy Exchange think-tank in London, he said: “We must increase the flow of intelligence coming from communities.
“Almost all of our prosecutions have their origins in intelligence that came from overseas, the intelligence agencies or from technical means. Few have yet originated from what is sometimes called “community intelligence.” This is something we are working hard to change.”
Mr Clarke, also national co-ordinator for anti-terrorist operations, warned starkly that al-Qa’eda was targeting the UK in a sustained campaign which, unlike IRA terror, aimed at mass civilian casualties with no warnings and suicide attacks.”
