Iran's president promised on Sunday Iranians would soon hear more news about the Islamic Republic's nuclear program, which the West believes is a covert effort to build atomic bombs despite Tehran's denials.

"The Iranian nation will soon hear fresh news about our country's nuclear transition," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying.

He did not give details about any announcements or when the news would be released but Ahmadinejad is due to hold a news conference on Tuesday.

Three Men Convicted of Committing
Federal Hate Crime in Utah

WASHINGTON – A federal jury in Salt Lake City, late Friday night, convicted Shaun A. Walker of Mill Point, W.Va., and Travis D. Massey and Eric G. Egbert, both of Salt Lake City, of assaulting a Mexican-American man in 2002 and conspiring to violate the civil rights of individuals for racially-motivated reasons in 2002 and 2003. The jury also found the defendants guilty of violating the victims’ federally protected right to enjoy a place of public accommodation free from violence based on their race.

Walker is a former leader of the West Virginia-based National Alliance, a white separatist group; Massey was also a member of the group.

The jury found the three men guilty of beating James Ballesteros, a Mexican-American, on New Year’s Eve 2002. The evidence at trial established that just before midnight, Walker, Massey and Egbert entered the O’Shucks bar in downtown Salt Lake City and shouted racial epithets at several patrons, including Ballesteros. As Ballesteros attempted to leave the bar, the defendants beat him to the ground by brutally punching and kicking him.

The conspiracy charge on which all three defendants were convicted also included an allegation that Massey participated in a similar assault against an unidentified Native American man outside the Port O’Call bar in Salt Lake City in March 2003.

“Racial violence is offensive to our nation’s fundamental values,” said Wan J. Kim, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. “The Justice Department is committed to vigorously prosecuting the federal laws prohibiting violent acts motivated by hate.”

Prosecuting the perpetrators of bias-motivated crimes is a top priority of the Justice Department. Since 2001, the Civil Rights Division has charged 165 defendants in 105 cases of bias-motivated crimes.

The case was investigated by the Salt Lake City Police Department and the Salt Lake City Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Carlos A. Esqueda and Trial Attorney Stephen J. Curran of the Civil Rights Division.

Federal Jury Convicts Man for Violating the Civil Rights of
a Michigan Family and Conspiring to Obstruct Justice

WASHINGTON – A federal jury in Detroit today convicted Wayland Mullins, of Taylor, Mich., of violating the civil rights of an African-American family by attempting to burn down the family’s house. Mullins was also found guilty of conspiring to violate the family’s housing rights, conspiring to obstruct a federal investigation, and using fire in the commission of a felony. Mullins faces a maximum of 25 years in prison on the civil rights violations and obstruction charges, and an additional mandatory 10 years in prison on the use-of-fire count. Mullins is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 23, 2007.

The evidence at trial established that on July 28, 2002, Mullins and several of his neighbors gathered together and discussed burning down the home of an African-American family that had recently moved into the neighborhood. Following this conversation, Mullins broke a window in the family’s home, poured in a flammable substance, and lit the substance on fire while a co-conspirator, Michael Richardson, acted as a lookout. After the fire, Mullins and Richardson attempted to obstruct a federal investigation into the arson by lying to federal investigators about their knowledge of the crime. The jury found that Mullins’ actions were racially-motivated.

Richardson, who pleaded guilty in federal court to civil rights and obstruction of justice violations in connection with this incident, testified against defendant Mullins at trial. A third defendant, Rick Cotton, also participated in the discussion before the fire and in the cover-up afterward, and was convicted by a jury for lying to federal investigators and a federal grand jury and for obstructing justice. Cotton also pleaded guilty to conspiring with Mullins, Richardson and others to violate the family’s housing rights. Cotton and Richardson face a maximum of up to 10 years and 35 years in prison, respectively, and both will be sentenced on April 25, 2007.

“These despicable acts were bred of ignorance and hate,” said Assistant Attorney General Wan J. Kim for the Civil Rights Division. “The federal government will continue vigorously to prosecute individuals who engaged in such bias-motivated violence.”

“Every American should be able to live in any community in our land without fear of racial intimidation or reprisal,” said U.S. Attorney Stephen J. Murphy. “Such hatred has no place in our society, as today’s jury verdict shows. But if it does arise, it will be met with the full force of the federal law enforcement power to stamp it out.”

Prosecuting the perpetrators of bias-motivated crimes is a top priority of the Justice Department. Since 2001, the Civil Rights Division has charged 165 defendants in 105 cases of bias-motivated crimes.

This case was investigated by the Taylor Police Department and the Detroit Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Hurley from the U.S. Attorney’s Office and Trial Attorney Michael Khoury from the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

British Police Arrest 6 Terror Suspects
Tuesday April 24, 2007

LONDON - British anti-terrorist police on Tuesday arrested six people who were suspected of inciting others to commit acts of terrorism overseas and raising funds for terrorism. Five of the arrests took place in London and one in Luton, northwest of London, the Metropolitan Police said.

``The arrests form part of a long-term pro-active and complex investigation into alleged incitement and radicalization for the purposes of terrorism, as well as alleged provision of financial support for international terrorism,'' a police spokesman said on condition of anonymity in line with force policy. The men were being held at an unnamed central London police station. Police said a number of searches were ongoing in connection with the investigation.

Police did not immediately identify the six. The British Broadcasting Corporation said, however, that one of the men was believed to be Abu Izzadeen, also known as Omar Brooks, who heckled Home Secretary John Reid last year. Izzadeen, 31, is the spokesman for the al-Ghurabaa group, which the government banned in July. He disrupted a meeting between Reid and Muslim leaders in London, which Reid had called to ask Muslim parents to look out for signs in their children of brainwashing by extremists.

List of Six Terror Suspects Arrested Today -- Omar Bakri Mohammed Implicated
April 24, 2007

UPDATE EXCLUSIVE: An Islamist forum connected with Omar Bakri Mohammed, and previously exposed here at The Jawa Report, has listed the names of the six terror suspects arrested today. Many of the names seemed mispelled, but here is how the forum listed them:

Abu Izzadeen from London
Abdul Haqq from London
Sulayman Keeler from London
Abu Muwaheed from London
Omar Zaheer from west London
Rajib Jhan (Khan) from Luton

All are followers of radical exiled clerica Omar Bakri Mohammed. The message also claimed those arrested were "victims of the British crusade", urged Muslims to pray for their release, and prayed that Allah would curse the kuffar (unbeliever).

US Charges Canadian Guantanamo detainee with murder, spying
Published: 04.24.07, 22:17 / Israel News

The US military filed murder charges Tuesday against Omar Khadr, a Canadian who was a teenager when he was captured in Afghanistan and sent to the Guantanamo Bay prison in 2002.

Khadr, now 20, also was charged with providing support to terrorism, attempted murder, conspiracy and spying. He faces a military trial at the prison in eastern Cuba under rules adopted last year and first used to try Australian detainee David Hicks. Khadr is to be arraigned on the charges within 30 days, the military said. (AP)

Canadian Gitmo Detainee Khadr Charged With Murder [finally!]
National Post [Canada] ^ | Tuesday, April 24, 2007 | CNS

Posted on 04/24/2007 1:31:18 PM PDT by canuck_conservative

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon on Tuesday formally charged Omar Khadr with murder, attempted murder and supporting al-Qaida, setting in motion long-awaited U.S. military legal proceedings against the accused Canadian terrorist.

Mr. Khadr will now appear before a U.S. military tribunal within 30 days to be arraigned on the charges.

He is the second “enemy combatant” to be charged under the newly constituted U.S. war crimes tribunals, following the conviction last month of Australian David Hicks.

His lawyers, and human rights groups, have complained the Canadian government has done little to ensure his proper treatment.

Mr. Khadr, 20, the Toronto-born son of an al-Qaida financier, has been imprisoned at the American military prison at Guantanamo since the fall of 2002. He was 15 when American forces captured him following a battle against al-Qaida fighters in southern Afghanistan.

He is alleged to have thrown a grenade that killed army medic Christopher Speer and to have converted landmines into roadside bombs to be used against U.S. troops.

General Emphasizes Use of Partnerships in Fighting Terror

By Carmen L. Gleason
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 24, 2007 – The global war on terror is more than a military fight; it is a war that will require the work of many U.S. and coalition agencies, a senior military official told a group of civilian leaders attending the Joint Civilian Orientation Conference here yesterday.

Army Lt. Gen. Douglas E. Lute, the Joint Staff’s director of operations, briefed 45 civilian business, academic and community leaders before their weeklong trip to several countries in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility, including the Horn of Africa.

Terrorists use a flat, open network of communications and pass their information mainly through the Internet, Lute said as he briefed the group at the Pentagon. These are aspects that defy U.S. military capability.

“We buy airplanes, ships and tanks and recruit and train soldiers to deal with the geographics of a tangible target,” he said. “We can bomb training camps, and we can hunt down the enemy, but we can’t bomb the Internet.”

By using a nodal network to spread their extremist ideologies, Lute said, terrorists are able to easily recruit members, acquire weapons, build leaders and receive financial backing.

Lute said the United States and its coalition partners will also need a network approach to combat against terrorism. By “lacing together networks,” Lute said, organizations such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Central Intelligence Agency, and departments of State, Justice, and Treasury must work to apply constant pressure on the al Qaeda network.

As the group prepared for its 18,000-mile journey over the next week, Lute told the civilian leaders he wanted to put into perspective the importance of what they would be seeing as they viewed CENTCOM operations.

“The bottom line is to not forget where we started,” Lute said.

Many Americans believe that the global war on terror began in the United States with the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, he said. It actually began 20 years earlier, the general told the civilian leaders, with the fall of the shah of Iran, the Iran hostage crisis, the burning to the ground of the American Embassy in Pakistan, and the Soviet Union invading Afghanistan.

“The main enemy you will be hearing about over and over during the next few days is al Qaeda,” Lute said. “But al Qaeda is not the only enemy today in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

Lute told the group that even before Sept. 11, 2001, Osama bin Laden advocated the overthrowing of every legitimate government in the Southwest Asia region.

If bin Laden could be successful in planning terrorist attacks from Afghanistan — what many people call one of the most remote places in the world — imagine what he could do in Iraq, the crossroads of the Middle East, Lute said.

“The most compelling reason that Iraq is important to us today is because al Qaeda has declared that’s where they want to plant their flag,” he said. “We can’t tolerate al Qaeda in Iraq. We can’t let bin Laden get a toehold in there.”

By working with 93 coalition partners, Lute said, the United States can assist the Iraqi government while the “window of opportunity” is still open.

“One of the design features of JCOC is to show you that the U.S. military is not the sole solution to any of these challenges,” Lute said. “It’s important for you to understand this isn’t merely a military fight.”

The military is there to provide space and time for Iraq to build its political structure, he said, while other arms of American government help them to develop local solutions for local problems.

“It may take us years or decades to get a local solution in these places,” Lute said. “But this must be an Iraqi solution.”
