Texas FReepers, Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 21, 12:00 Noon.

We are so very fortunate that Freeper "leofl" has arranged to give us a tour of Fort Hood. Fort Hood is located near Killeen, West of I-35 exits at Temple, Belton area. Thanks so much Leo, for making this happen. Please note if you are interested in joining us. We're still working on a few details but for now here's Leo's note to us......

"I will take you on-post to both the 1st Cav museum and the 4th ID area. I will also show you some of the sights and maybe sounds of Fort Hood. Bring your cameras as you can take pictures at the museums. Other places are clearly marked and I assure you you will have a great time. This is a family friendly outing but there are some things everyone should know.

Fort Hood is now a restricted base. We can get on-base but be sure to bring:

A copy of your insurance card and registration for your automobile

Proper Government ID ie driver's license, State id etc

Do not bring any weapons even if you are a CCL licensee. This is federal property and it makes the guys with bigger guns crazy!!! lol

A fun attitude and a comfortable pair of walking shoes.

Children are welcome and appreciated!!! Let them see what some of our brave heroes are doing to protect their future. Besides I'm a big kid at heart!!"

Thanks for the ping!

Fort Hood was my home base in 57, 58 and 59.

I would like to see how much it has changed in 50 years.

Elvis took basic at Ft. Hood but I never saw him or tried to see him.

He rented a house in Killeen for his father.
The house was seemed to have girls 3 or 4 deep near his rental house every time I went by the area.
The paper said Elvis had given towels to the people in his platoon for Christmas.
My Sister that loved to embroidery sent me some fancy towels with my initials F P and they were so fancy it looked like it could be an E P.
I traded the towels to a couple of the girls.
If EBAY every has the towels, look very close because it might be an F instead of an E.

I've already made plans for the San Antonio memorial shoot and I won't be able to take time off again that soon.
I wish I could, but I simply can't. Ya'll have a great time though!

I have extensive experience with Ft. Hood.

My Mother was married to a Capt. in the Army and We lived at W. Hood when I was in the 4th grade. My little brother was born at Darnell Army hospital that yr.

My Grandfather had the electronics contract with the Post Ex. and I worked for him in 7th and 8th grade on post. We also rented more than 5000 TVs to base personnel.
Grew up in Gatesville where living with rattling windows from tank and artillery fire and constant flyovers from military aircraft was common place. Use to go out on the weekends to watch the tracers from the tank fire and explosions in the distance.

I can pretty much guarantee my attendance with three children, and possibly with one more adult and two more children.

Thank you for asking, TexConfederate1861.

I have known many Sgt. ROBERT HAROLDs, who put a broad smile on GOD's Face while they selflessly fought for the Freedom of others 'round the world.

Some folks here are in for a BIG surprise when they eventually say "ALOHA" to their physical bodies on the Earth, for sure.

If Sgt. ROBERT HAROLD was in the 1st CAV in Vietnam in 1965-66 I may have known him. The name doesn't ring a bell right off the bat, though.

Find it interesting that you were stationed at Fort Hood, because of your daddy being in the military, I suppose. It will be interesting to pay it another visit. :-)

Hi Gracey. I think the Blastus family will be attending. Do we have a time to meet at Flood’s place yet?

Just talked to leofl. Regarding timing..... we will begin gathering around 11:00 AM in the parking lot, to give us time to organize car pools, etc.

Take off from Flood Insurance parking lot for Fort Hood tour will be at 12:00 NOON.

Leo says that it will take a while for us to get through security. It should be an unforgettable trip.

Hope that's suitable for all You can get something to eat before leaving or as a group we can have a late lunch early dinner.

Wow, I bet Killeen commuters were pissed when that went into effect.

Not really. Highway 190 runs either just south of the post, in some spots *through* it, but those are not in the restricted parts of the post. It's a bit difficult to go North from Killeen, but there's also not many places to go, that you'd not have to go east or west first anyway.

I work on West Fort Hood, which is south of Highway 190.

I haven't checked my calender for the 21st (14th is the Second Annual Texas Cowboy Memorial Shoot in San Antonio!) but if I'm going to be in town, I'd sure like to join y'all. Plus I can take 3 or 4 others onto post and avoid the hassle of getting a car pass for those few.

Interestingly, to me anyway, the Air Force is doing away with the requirement for car passes/stickers, which they've had for virtually all their bases for at least 30 years, and likely more like 40 or 50 years. Now you'll just have to either have military ID, or get a personal pass. Just for the driver, the passengers can still just show a government issued picture ID. That's always a problem when our supervisor comes up from San Antonio. He has to leave his driver's license in the building when he gets his building pass, and then doesn't have it to show when we come back from lunch, which he (actually the company) pays for.

Here's what you look for

I know where that is!

I ate pretty much right across the highway from there last evening. (No not at the other blue roofed place!).
