Are You Concerned About Mitt Romney's Faith?

There has been much controversy here at Free Republic about a Mormon running for President. Mitt Romney has been questioned about his faith and many people here have posted things here expressing concern about what they consider to be "weird" doctrines. Today and tomorrow, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is holding their 177th Semi-Annual General Conference in which the leaders of the church address the membership around the world directly.

In light of the many misconceptions regarding the LDS (Mormon) church here on FR, I offer the following links for those who have questions and concerns about Mitt and his faith. Conference is a great opportunity for those who know little about the Mormon church to have a few questions answered; to get your answers straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Therefore, here is a link to the broadcast website:

April 2007 LDS General Conference

There are audio streams available in multiple languages and video from KSL TV in Salt Lake City and KBYU, Brigham Young University's television station. The video links are in the first paragraph at the top of the page.

The next session begins at 4pm Eastern/3pm Central. Tomorrow's sessions will be at 12 noon/11 am Central and 4 pm Eastern/3 pm Central. Sessions are 2 hours long.

It is a public broadcast so no passwords or registration are required.

Ist it strange that Romney is the only one who is getting attacked because of his faith. Shame on the media.

I have a gay Republican neighbor who was living in Boston while Romney was Governor. He says Romney did some amazingly things during his time in office.

BTW, Romney has never waffled. He used to believe in a women's right to choose and now he doesn't.

Guiliani still believes in the right to choose.

We are losing millions of female votes over this issue.

I noted that I thought the Joseph Smith plates and strange underwear and planet Kolob and all that were pretty stupid.

You are entitiled to your opinion, however, what do you know about any of the things you mentioned?

What's terrible is that we're forced to have this discussion. Fortunately, it's still early in the political process.

With the MSM, we're in an untenable position: If Romney isn't the GOP nominee, it's because the VRWC is religiously bigoted. If Romney becomes the nominee, however, watch every newspaper and broadcast news bureau turn their guns on the LDS.

I don't care. I don't trust him, regardless of what he says he is.

With all due respect, I understand that Satan was in Heaven before the fall. He was an Arch-Angel.

My point is that I don't agree with the doctrine that teaches that he was the spirit brother of Jesus Christ.

Mitt's position right now is that he supports Embryonic stem cell research. That research requires that embryos are killed to retrieve their stem cells.

Do you believe that is abortion? Mitt supports stem cell research.

That Health Care Bill he signed here took care of that for me.

So you really don't think that Kennedy and his power base did not tweak Romney original plan?

Romney Plan was everyone had to pay something who were low wage earners it was not a free lunch, so that medicate did not have to pick up the whole bill for the inbetween!

What the Health bill is today is not the one Romney that put into play!

I think Unmarked Package can explain it better.

Goldwater would have no home in today's Republican party.

Much like myself.

Enjoy the Democrats.

"Another issue, is the junk about believing that Satan and Jesus are brothers. Mormons do not put these two at the same level, they are complete total opposites."

Are you denying Mormons believe that Jesus and Satan are brothers? That's a fact. What is junk about me stating factually what is your doctrine? I've taken the time to study it and find that information.

Also, Joseph Smith taught that God did not create our spirits. He taught that God did not have the power to create our spirits. Yet, the LDS Church teaches that our spirits were born of God and a Heavenly Mother. So, Jesus was born thus and Satan was born thus and we were born thus. Was Joseph Smith wrong, or is the current teaching of the church wrong? For reference, check out the King Follett discourse in Joseph's own words.

No offense taken. I am not trying to make statements that are not true. Here's the difference. Mormons believe in two types of salvation:

"Apostle James Talmage said, "The FIRST EFFECT (of the atonement) is to secure to all mankind alike, exemption from the penalty of the fall, thus, providing a plan of General Salvation. The SECOND EFFECT is to open a way for Individual Salvation whereby mankind may secure remission of personal sins. As these sins are the result of individual acts, it is just that forgiveness for them should be conditioned on individual compliance with prescribed requirements - obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel" (A. of F., p. 87)."

A Christian believes that Jesus Christ died for even our individual sins, and there are no means by ourselves that we can comply earn that salvation because we are always sinners in the eyes of God.

See the difference.

I hear that kind of false doctrine spoke of from time to time. Generally from non LDS people.

Mormons do not believe we earn our way into heaven.

Yet there are people who go around pontificating and saying we do believe that.

No, we do not.

We show our faith through our obedience to the laws and commandments of God. It will be the faithful who recieve mercy when the time for that comes.

The idea of earning one's way into heaven and thus cutting out Christ was created by some preacher in some other religion and assigned as 'the beliefs of Mormons'.

My point is that Satan totally severed and lost his relationship with God and Jesus Christ when he fell from Heaven. In my opinion it is misleading not to state that fact as well.

The meat of that quote is this "obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel".

What are those laws and ordinances? It is Faith in Jesus Christ unto a repentance of sins, then baptism, the Holy Ghost and being faithful unto Jesus Christ until the end.

And yes Mormons, emphasize that "Faith" in Jesus Christ is a verb and requires action on our part with heavy doses of mercy from God. While at the same time, we should always be humble and acknowledge that our strength and support comes from above.

Let's discuss Mitt's positions on the issues, and not make an issue of his faith. Are we concerned that Giuliani is a Roman Catholic? Or that McCain is an Episcopalian?

Respectfully, I disagree on what you consider the meat of the quote. I see the meat as:

"just that forgiveness for them should be CONDITIONED ON INDIVIDUAL COMPLIANCE "

If our individual forgiveness is conditioned upon our own compliance, then we would all fail miserably in the eyes of God.

Jesus Christ on the cross made our salvation unconditional by the Grace of God, with the only condition that we accept that gift and that Grace. (I recommend reading some of Romans, it really touches upon this whole topic).
