I just saw this on the news. I opened a new bag of Hill's Science Diet Adult Small Bites (dog food) on Tuesday. I fed it to my dogs that night and all 3 of them had diarrhea the next day. The oldest one also had blood in her urine. I haven't given them any more of the food and took samples in for testing. I have been trying to call the company since Wednesday to ask whether this food could be contaminated, but haven't been able to get through to them. I wonder if their dog food will be the next to get recalled. All 3 dogs have seemed okay yesterday and today.

But you were not eating them, were you?

I don't remember. I get pretty hungry after a few drinks

I wonder if the pets' kidneys turn the rat poison into melamine, hence the crystals. Melamine as such is not soluble in water, acids, alkalies, or fats and so it's hard to see how it could get into the blood during digestion. I can vouch for that with a set of melamine dishes that have been in my family and have been constantly dirtied with all manner of food and machine washed over more than 40 years. Although the design printed on them has faded a little, they have not visibly pitted or eroded.

Same advice I gave SoCal Pubbie: join the Yahoo Group Feline-CRF-Support group at http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Feline-CRF-Support/ Post your cat's bloodwork results (with the lab reference ranges that appear in parentheses next to the actual test results) and brief history, and read the messages and ask questions every day. Soon you'll know more than your vet does about managing kidney failure in cats. Also go to www.felinecrf.org and read, read, read. It's a great reference source put together by a cat owner who used to participate in the Feline-CRF-Support group.

I started when she was off her feed a couple of times and she liked it so much I just kept on. One of her favorite vegetables in this mix is cooked rutabaga. No kidding. She loves rutabagas and Brussells Sprouts.

Do you put the Brussels Sprouts through a blender before you add it to the food?

I just switched over to real food for our dogs when this recall happened, so I'm still new at it.
I switched them over abruptly, and they both suffered from the runs for a day, but they seem fine now.
I've been adding new foods gradually, but I am worried about too much roughage.

How old is your girl?

With all the publicity about the contaminated food, tens of thousands of people are now rushing off to the vet at the slightest sign of Fluffy or Fido being a little under the weather

Yeah, what idiots. How dare they!!!!

I’m not suggesting people shouldn’t run their pets to the vet when the pet seems ill. But assuming that any kidney trouble that is then diagnosed must be related to tainted pet food is a huge leap that a lot of people seem to be making. No doubt a lot of these pets were long overdue for a vet visit before this pet food scare, and would have been diagnosed with kidney failure at a much earlier, more treatable stage, if it hadn’t taken a nationwide panic to get their owners to take them to the vet.
