I just posted on another thread that my 3 dogs all got sick (diarrhea and blood in urine) after I fed them Hill's Science Diet Adult Small Bites food from a new bag I opened on Tuesday. They only ate it on Tuesday night and since then have gotten "home-cooked" food. They seem to be okay now, so maybe the food wasn't contaminated. But I don't trust them anymore.

You might want to pick up some Sam-e at WalMart and give it to your dogs for a few weeks, add some B-50 complex (you need a balanced B with Sam-e).. it will help detox the liver. Good for you homecooking. They don't need kibble anything, dog's don't need grains. Just remember to add some ground egg shell for calcium 1/2 tsp per pound of meat.

A dog health list I'm home has a vet-tech who has been reporting the dogs they have been treating in droves from contaminated "DRY" food... this isn't a coincidence. I wouldn't wait to call your vet.

That is disgusting. All for the almighty dollar? How much more expensive could it it be to manufacture a quality nutritious pet food product in large quantities FGS?

read the article I linked, mom. it's the same article I read 9 years ago and changed my mind on feeding, it has been kept updated over the years and the pet companies cannot get it taken down because it speaks to truth.

It's absolutely horrendous Mom. I first became aware of it when my dog was diagnosed with diabetes. The vet recommended a diet that was 60 per cent fat!, the dog needs 1/3 protein, 1/3 carbohydrate, 1/3 fiber. I asked him why he would tell me to feed the dog that, and he said that the salesman for the product assured him it was the best food on the market! The vets are idiots. Don't trust them.

I have 4 dogs, a wolf, and a wolf hybrid. The wolf refused to eat the science diet about 3months ago, and now we know why.

I feed them brown rice, beef, chicken and a kelp vitamin, along with fish oil. I don't trust any of the dog food companies or the vets at this writing.

Do animals need carbs? I'm just still living in quasi limbo post Katrina and my life is not quite normal yet. Most of my belongings are still in storage and it would be difficult to store a raw food program right now and with the lack of access to kitchen gadgets needed. Wouldn't I need a meat grinder and things like that? I'm trying the innova, solid gold and natural balance for now, but I will be settled soon and will go for the raw diet.

If you HAD to feed a store bought food--what would you feed? Remember I have an elderly sick kitty and a 3 year old kitty in good health.

I was just taking the total from that site.

Are you a dog? She was discussing what people feed their dogs... and it's pretty pathetic, one reason so many dogs are sick and over weight. Dogs were a lot healthier back when they were fed table scraps and not vaccinated up the ying yang.

Another opinion. Thank you.
I choose to vaccinate my kids and my pets. It's an individual choice, is it not?
Neither my kids nor my pets are either overweight or sickly. In fact all my pets have lived 50% longer than they were "expected to". I happen to believe that indoor pets are exposed to less nastiness than outdoor pets.

I do not presume to tell others what to do and I appreciate the same courtesy.

My yorkie has been sick the last 2 days (vomiting, letharic, not eating). But, he did not eat anything from the list. He eats Science Diet dry, but I did feed him 1/2 pouch Pedigree (gravy with meat) as a treat about a day this started up.

Can you tell me if you fed your dog something from the list? Thx. Hope your pup is feeling better soon.

No. They don't need carbs, especially cats. There is a brand new food with a formula for dogs and a formula for cats available at onlynaturalpetstore called Natures Logic.

Whether you feed raw as I do or canned or kibble, we all need to stop supporting these cheap grocery store and petstore brands... Nature's Logic has dry as well as canned, it's all natural and chemical free.

Here is the link to the Natures Logic Website They have a link to click on for the nearest location you can purchase their food.

Science Diet for cats kibble was added to the recall this afternoon. I know people trust it, because vets sell it, but Science Diet is not the best food. Unfortunately, far from it.

The vets sell it because Science Diet and Purina are the two major companies who actually give them their very limited education in nutrition and they also give out a lot of scholarships. Science Diet contains BHA, BHT and Ethioxin. Yorkies being so small could possibly be more rapidly affected, but many large dogs, many who did not eat canned, have become very ill or worse since this took place.

One thing the news is not sharing, Menu Foods actually knew they had a problem long before it was announced in the USA and they actually put out a release that said "not for distribution in the US. I guess they were worried about stock prices or something, but I find that unconsionable.

They have a distributor in my state, but no retail store. I'm going to call and find out if i can get it from the distributor.
Thanks!

My research said that a diabetic dog needed protein, carbs and fiber. He will eat broccoli, yams and carrots, so I'm lucky there. I cooked for him and pretty soon he was eating pretty much what we eat so now it's no big deal to feed him. the others though are harder. I don't know about an elderly cat-- I would just research online. Be careful with raw food diets-- I gave one of the dogs salmonella and I quit that.

Yes, I'm a little afraid of the raw food diet because of salmonella, parasites etc...

I'm really interested in finding a pet food that uses human grade ingredients with no filler ingredients.

Karen Roebuck of the Pittsburg Tribune-Review, ... asked if any of the wheat gluten had found its way into the human food supply.

Duh! You can answer this question yourself. Do you really think there are different qualities of wheat gluten, one for animals and one for humans? Wheat gluten is wheat gluten. Yes, it's in your food and you'd be smart to quit eating packaged processed food of any sort whatsoever because there's hidden gluten in almost all processed foods, including the Dinty Moore Beef Stew, the bread, the soups, the canned gravies, and much, much more, all on your store shelves just waiting for you.

This is huge and scary. The story has been downplayed to a degree regarding pets and completely ignoring human food consumption.

Anyway, thanks for letting me vent, FRiend. Regards.

Aminopterin sounds like that's it. I was thinking resin earlier when melamine was mentioned, but melamine itself is just a condensation product of urea and ammonia used as fertilizer also. It hydrolyzes with water and goes back to urea and ammonia. The LD50 is 3.2 grams/kg rat, mouse, so it's not very toxic. Depending on the concentrations and ratios they find, they can tell how the contamination likely occurred. I doubt there was much melamine, because it would taste disgustingly bitter and ammonical. It would only take small amounts of aminopterin.

Okay! So, what foods are good to buy right now? Especially with a picky eater of a dog?
