Yeah. The benchmarking I've read shows that Vista wants 2GB of RAM for peak performance (and that's still a few percentage points behind XP). As with the previous versions of Windows, expect that number to double, or worse, over the coming years.
Many machines are being sold with only 512MB of RAM for Vista Basic, 1GB for Vista Premium. That's at least only half what they should have. Heck, even XP doesn't run all that well with just 512MB.
When they have to develop a whole new technology--the USB flash memory cache thingy--in an attempt to compensate for the astonishing level of bloat and monumentally slow load times, someone in Redmond should get the hint:
Windows is just too flippin' big!
Programming efficiency does matter. ...especially in an Operating System!!
You just KNOW he'll be in to tell us how Dell has been coopted by the Red Pinko commie bastards!
Sadly, one of the computers I mentioned was a fast 2 GB box. But that's probably related to a certain bug. From what I've heard the sweet (complete comfort) level for Vista is 4 GB.
Many machines are being sold with only 512MB of RAM for Vista Basic, 1GB for Vista Premium.
Someone here once quoted a major OEM machine with Vista Home Premium that had 512 MB RAM shared with lowest-possible integrated video. It's just dishonest to sell a machine in that configuration. I might as well advertise a 20hp family van with a three-gallon gas tank. Sure, it'll run, but not far and never with a full load.
The last time Apple sold a Mac that was even slightly under-configured for OS X was the original 256 MB standard Mac mini. 256 runs a bit slow, 512 is easily usable, 1 GB is the sweet spot. Currently, the only systems they sell with 512 are the bottom-end iMac and MacBook, and the mini. Everything else is 1 or 2 GB.
In general, it feels like Vista has about four times the real-world memory requirements of OS X, where 1 GB is a bit slow, 2 GB is easily usable, and 4 GB is sweet.
No I was just correctly exposing the countless bogus claims that Dell was shipping them, going back over a year now, even though they never have. Still haven't, of course.
Not yet, obviously, despite all the previous claims by the commie bastards themselves.
Dell got very rich and very famous selling computers that run Windows. He knows most of the Linux crowd builds their own boxes and despise the future (DRM). Obviously based onhis actions he cares little for their supposed plight, nor should he.
Those are your words
Look for Dell to reverse this decision within 4 weeks, as Microsoft threatens to increase OEM costs for Windows...
Well it's been over a year we've been hearing these bogus rumors from this "community" you seem to be a part of, we'll see if it's true this time.
And that is just why I support this Linux idea. I hate that gates wants total control
Please place me on your ping list
I just got a visual of the penguin from Madagascar.
"Well, this sucks."
I have been playing with various distros and love the stability and ending the endless cycle of restarts that comes with Linux. Out of the ones I play with, SuSE is my favorite.
Another thing is that I also keep a Knoppix disc with me when a Windows box goes south. Whenever anyone sees it in operation, they are usually amazed.
I started down the Linux path a few years ago when my 98 box crashed once and ate a few files that weren't even open (some audio and graphics stuff I made). It made me rather mad and a quick search of Linux distros was done and I picked SuSE 8 at the time. Painless installation, quick, pretty much all the hardware worked off the bat. The printer took a little work though. I left it up for weeks at a time, it was wonderful.
My wife had HD problems for a week a couple of years ago. I started Knoppix and plugged in a flash drive for storage. There were no system hiccups at all and it was way faster than "X-tra Pathetic". It was almost not worth putting in a new HD and going back to Windows but there were reasons that had to be.
I also use openoffice about the same amount that I use MS Office. Openoffice is one piece of software I really like.
My aunt recently got a new computer with Vista pre-installed......and guess what I saw on there within TWO days?! Four letters : B.S.O.D. Microsoft blows while Linus goes (up, that is).
One of my spouse’s relatives had Xtra Pathetic crash on them on an older Gateway box a couple of weeks ago. The HD was junk and they bought a new drive for me to install.
I installed it and made it a dual boot box with Mandrake 9.2 that I had laying around. Mandrake correctly ID’d all the hardware and took about 15 minutes to painlessly install.
The XP install took about an hour for a few reasons. After going through the setup and getting working, installing service pack 2, and using the Gateway system disc, the NIC and sound card drivers refused to load. I had to locate them online with my laptop and bumped them to a cd to install.
I showed them the Linux side of things and they were impressed with the ease of use and how friendly it was. They are not very technical types and they started picking up on how to move around and get some use.
Besides, Mandrake loads up faster than XP on this machine and running as solid as anything.
Well, right now my favorite OS is Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft (very fast load up times), with Xandros 3.0.3 a close second. Right now I have ZERO versions of Windows installed on my two computers...not even on one of those Windows virtualization things such as Win4Lin 9X or Win4Lin Pro. I’m thinking about reinstalling Ubuntu on here (got Xandros on here) so I can install MythTV or TV Time with my AVerTV Go 007 PCI TV tuner card (said to be very easy to set up in Linux). Ever since the Archlug repositories went down (seems permanent this time), MythTV isn’t available for Xandros anymore. I’ll probably just stick with TV Time because MythTV needs a LOT of configuring in order to get it to work.
