Earlier this year, 100,000 people took part in a Dell survey. More than 70% of respondents said they would use Linux.

So much for the $150 Dell gets for putting windows shovelware on every windows box. I have a feeling they aren't going to push this too hard.

One of the worst things Microsoft did was Vista. It's pushing a lot more people into looking at alternatives.

This is great news. At this point, the biggest challenge in running Linux on a new computer is having all the proper drivers. If Dell will preload, that will be taken care of.

I have been setting up a Dimension E521 for my dad, and while it hasn't been horrible, there have been occasional issues to work around. I had to add all kinds of weird kernel arguments to keep the mouse from occasionally freezing, and the sound chip on it is awful (although that's not a Linux-specific complaint).

My youngest just bought a Mac laptop for college. Our salesman told us about a customer that bought a PC with Vista, hated it, returned it. He then came in and bought a Mac.

For the last month or so I've been installing and trying out various Linux distros, and haven't seen a BSOD yet. Some of my old W98 boxes have been rejuvenated and reborn this way.

"You don't remember ME do you?"

Millions of us try to forget about that. :) But unlike ME, MS is pulling all non-Vista versions of windows out of stores as fast as they can.

Don't think any of the main retailers, Gateway, Dell, HP etc... have any version of windows other than Vista now.

that may be true. HOWEVER, in real world talk this means Microsoft will now loose .000001% of the market .

Linux is still for computer above average savy. For Mr. and Mrs. America, we are still going to be in the monopoly realm.

Just life.

I was shopping for a new computer early last month. I was told by a Dell representative that Vista the only operating system that Dell provided and that I couldn't get a credit for not taking it.

I told them that as long as that was the case, I would replace my Dell Dimension 8250 with something besides a Dell.

Nope. If Dell preloads, you'll hardly notice the difference (except it will cost less, and you'll get more preloaded software).
