FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. -- A Flagler Beach swimmer's discovery of a box marked "grenade" with 18 live shells inside prompted authorities to evacuate five homes, two businesses and close several nearby streets Monday night, according to police.
Officers said the woman swimmer found the ammunition-size box containing the explosives on South 19th Street and South Oceanshore Boulevard.
Police said she put the container with explosives in her car and traveled to a phone and called for help.
When Flagler County fire officials arrived, they noticed the package and called the Volusia County bomb squad.
"The box had "grenade" written on the side of it," Flagler Beach Fire Chief Martin Roberts said. "And they didn't want to handle it. We took one look at it and decided that it was not something we wanted to deal with."
Local 6 showed video of a Volusia County bomb squad robot removing the top of the box early Tuesday.
Officials said the 18 live shells were transported to the Cape Canaveral Air Force range were they were to be detonated Tuesday.
Roads closed because of the discovery were reopened to traffic early Tuesday.

The box had GRENADE written on it. I don't think I would have put it in my car and drove down to the Police Station with it. Geez.

"Grenade fishing" is fun but messy.

Poorly written article...did she find them in the water?
It mentions she was a swimmer, but then seems to indicate they were found at a certain location.
Why did they mention she was a "swimmer" if she found the grenades on land?

as to the origin of these "shells" (whatever THAT means), it is probable that some other vehicle with occupants was followed or thought they were being followed by the cops and they dumped this box.......coppers on patrol in the immediate vicinity previous to the time of discovery ought to be searching their memories, to include considering vehicles that they had no interest in at the time

Fishing tackle. My thoughts also ...

a)The woman is retarded.
b) The writer is retarded. Was she swimming on 19th St. and South Oceanshore Boulevard?
c) I thought this article was going to be about Ted Kennedy.
