In what might be an early indication of the nation's thinking on the next Republican presidential nominee, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani won a straw poll Saturday night with 233 votes at the Summit County party's annual Lincoln Day Dinner in downtown Akron.
Giuliani's total was 31 percent of the 752 votes cast in the straw poll.
Finishing second with 194 votes, or 26 percent, was U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona. Former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee was a distant third with 91 votes.
Rounding out the top five, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was fourth with 65 votes, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was next with 62.

I find it hard to believe that Thompson is in third place. The GOP has already crowned Rudy and will shove him down our throats cause they don't care what CONSERVATIVES want or think!
Note that everyone was included:
"Printed on professional-looking 8 ½-by-11-inch cardboard ballots were the names of 14 declared and potential presidential candidates. They were listed in alphabetical order as follows: U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback (Kansas), former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore, Gingrich, Giuliani, U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel (Nebraska), former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter (California), McCain, former New York Gov. George Pataki, U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (Texas), Romney, U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo (Colorado), Fred Thompson and former Wisconsin Gov. and Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson."
Akron ain't Mayberry!
Name one concrete example of any GOP shoving anything down your throat. These guys are out getting votes on their own.
Why does McCain get any support? Sure, he supports the WOT, but that's his only strong point.
It's not like the other candidates don't support the WOT.
Well, except for Ron Paul. He wants to hire pirates to catch the bad guys.
Before Giuliani entered the race, McCain was leading. As soon as Rudy entered, he jumped to first place and has been staying there.
Getting 12% of the vote, as Thompson is doing, doesn't exactly win elections.
McClintock deja vue, he got 12% and that's all he ever got -- Thompson may be a lot more charismatic than McClintock, but not any more electable.
Gingrich and Thompson were in this poll for what reason ?
They are not in the race as of yet. I guess a poll means nothing unless you throw some people in who aren't running .
If the goal is to totally skew the numbers , it's working .
Who is behind this strategy ?
AIhave news for you, half of those who say they are very conservative, are supporting Giuliani -- there were some recent polls that showed that.
Or Americans are truly shifting to the left?
I'll be up to see Duncan in NH today.
Possibly an atypical sample of GOP voters?
Possibly. Fred Thompson won the Gwinnett County (Georgia) GOP straw poll yesterday.
Key phrase- as soon as Rudy ENTERED.
I'd say Fred in 3rd is not bad for someone who hasn't even announced- doesn't have "the machine" behind him and hasn't raised one thin dime...
Nice try, though:)
I agree, Rudy WAS my choice. Will they jam him down our throats? Hmmmm, primary elections have to count for something. By the time it gets to Wisconsin it will be over, but the early states will have their say.
I find it hard to believe that just because the Republicans lost an election, now means that Republicans are suddenly adopting the beliefs of the people (Dims) that defeated them .
McCain does NOT support the War on Terror.
Don't forget that he pushed through the Terrorist Protection bill, giving the captured terrorists US Constitutional protections and the bill also forbids "degrading" treatment -- no panties on the terrorists' head, even if it would save the US from being nuked.
I do NOT call this "supporting the War on Terror".
He isn't even officially running yet. I think 12% is pretty dammed good considering the only thing he's done is a couple of interviews.
Some people complain when polls don't include the "potential" candidates, others complain when they do.
