Rumsfeld Gets Icy Treatment in Taos
Albuquerque Journal ^ | Friday, March 23, 2007 | Polly Summar

Posted on 03/24/2007 10:39:57 AM PDT by woofie

TAOS— This small mountain town is known for leaving its celebrities alone. That's why Julia Roberts can shop for yarn at La Lana Wools and Anthony Hopkins (aka Hannibal Lecter) can thumb through the pages at Brodsky Bookshop undisturbed.

But Donald Rumsfeld, former Secretary of Defense? That's a different story.

While living in Taos, Rumsfeld has suffered a number of public indignities, from being burned in effigy to being refused a hot chocolate by a bartender.

But last week's description of a verbal fracas aimed at Rumsfeld by writer Jeff Conant, posted on an Internet political newsletter at www.counterpunch.org, may have been the most unpleasant.

Happening across Rumsfeld, who was sitting on an outdoor deck at the Taos Ski Valley, Conant wrote that he raised his voice, saying, "Well lookee here! If it isn't Donald Rumsfeld, our favorite local war criminal!"

Conant added a few more comments before Rumsfeld's guests, who appeared to be two female Secret Service agents, stood and started toward him. Moving into the restaurant, Conant announced that Rumsfeld was outside, if anyone wanted "to tell him what you think of his war."

On Thursday, workers at the ski area were blasé about Rumsfeld and his appearances there.

"He was here at the hotel for lunch, maybe a month ago, wearing a baseball cap," said Greg Jaramillo, who was working the grill on the outdoor deck at the St. Bernard lodge. "People aren't real psyched he lives here, but I don't know that anybody really notices him much."

His co-worker, John Woolery, added, "I think there's people in Iraq who'd like to talk to him. But that's why he likes this place— nobody cares."

I don't have any intention of impressing anybody; merely stating my opinion.

Regardless, I think we both agree that someone who has served our country for so long deserves respect, or at the very minimum a peaceful retirement.

What an a**h**e. I have known 12 year olds to write better poetry. I'm sure real poets like Dylan Thomas and T.S. Eliot and Lord Byron (and Bob Dylan, for that matter) are spinning in their graves that a POS like this can call himself a poet. I would call him a typist, with no offense meant to respectable typists.

Both of them.

Political differences should never yield to the fanatical hatred shown by Mr. Conant or anyone on our side.

What did he expect from the artsy-fartsy set in a place like Taos?

So it's Rummy's fault that he was sitting there minding his own business, when some son-of-a-bitch Leftist out trying to make a name for himself verbally assaulted him?

You people who always manage to blame the good guys while ignoring where the blame should really be placed are the worst scum of all, in my opinion.

What is he doing in Taos anyway. It's nothing but a scummy artist's colony. Infestation by leftwing flies is to be expected. Plenty of good scenery in more hospitable locations.

"...it sure as hell feels good when you do it"

And after all, it's all about the liberals feeling good for the moment...right?

Wonder if he lets his wife watch...

Taos and Santa Fe are overrun with the California liberal hippie crowds. I lived a good portion of my life in NM (still identify most closely with there) and I can tell you the locals hate the CA libs as much, if not more, than Texans.

But if he should ever change his mind, might I suggest he move to Farmington? Scenery is just as nice, good conservative folks, and the skiing in Durango is awesome.

While I am disgusted by the rudeness and unhinged behavior shown to Sec Rumsfeld, there is an even bigger trend here that is dis-concerning.

Just in the last few weeks, The GOE's is needed to protect "The Wall".

Again, protest In San Fransisco and Portland whose pictures and stories have been on here on the Freep. The details of the defecating on the Flag and some of the verbiage on posters is beyond the pale.

Many of these folks do not possess the means to do so, but they border in my opinion on being want-a-be subversives if not anarchist that would revel in the downfall of this Nation.

Help me on this, are these folks individuals that are truly in need of "help" or, are we are they truly looking to incite something.

It is looking more and more like 1968 all over again, yuk.

Oops correction,

2nd to the last line should read: "help", or are they looking.
