As '08 Candidate, Giuliani Strikes a New Tone on Guns
New York Times ^ | March 23, 2007 | RICHARD PÉREZ-PEÑA

But as a presidential candidate, Mr. Giuliani now talks very differently about guns as he tries to allay the concerns of Republican primary voters. He says he supports the right of individuals to bear arms, and that states — and generally not the federal government — should decide whether to put some limits on that right. He also spoke in favor of a federal appeals court ruling this month that struck down a District of Columbia ordinance barring people from keeping handguns in their homes.

Perhaps most striking, Mr. Giuliani’s campaign says it is not clear that he would support a measure he once championed, an assault weapons ban

"Because he's full of crap. His well-documented track record on this issue exposes these statements as nothing more than shameless political pandering."

Geeze I was going to write an eloquent reply to this thread but you said it better with more candor than I had intended!

Giuliani is starting to flop around worse than a flounder on dry land.

He's changing his positions more than Hillary.

This doesn't look good -- when a politician turns into a chameleon to appeal to differing groups.

Actually, I can't support the guy. And I'm no lawyer, so I don't give a rip other than the fact that as a female gun owner in the State of Wisconsin, also in the grip of Socialism, I can't defend myself against a predator while off of my own property. I can go to jail for blasting a perp with pepper spray. I can't even have a roll of quarters in an old sweat sock to use as a "weapon" to defend myself!

And then, even while ON my own property, I have to "run away" first and PROVE that I was running away when I fired. If, in fact, while running for my life, I can unlock the "safety lock for the children" that renders my gun useless 99.999% of the time, load, turn slightly to the left or right while running full speed, and then fire. *Rolleyes*

It just irks me to no end. You DO realize that the End Goal is to strip we proletariat of all weaponry, right? We're so much easier to control when unarmed. (WI & IL are the last holdouts for CC.)

Just ask the Socialists in my state...they prefer I be barefoot, pregnant...AGAIN, unmarried and on the dole...and a VICTIM on a regular basis.

(Not bitchin' at you; just bitchin'.)

I can't stand people who will say what people want to hear. His record speaks for itself. He's a gun grabber.

Worse than that. He tried to use the court system to harass gun businesses in other states. His protege, Bloomberg, is now doing more of the same.

The gun issue is also a Federal issue . Klinton is a perfect example of pushing Federal gun control legislation .
It can be regualted on both levels, and we will not let Rudy's stand on this issue get pawned off as a "states only" issue .
Gun control most likely would make it to his desk in some form - what would he do with it ? Go against everything he has stood for in the past ? I have serious doubts Rudy would veto anti-gun legislation .

You prefer persisting in error? Or that he view the entire nation as being subject to the same laws as its largest city?

Odd viewpoint.

Actually he is incorrect still. The right of the people to keep and bear arms, SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.
It doesn't say congress shall make no law. That would leave gun control up to the states.
The states are not allowed to restrict the right.

Giuliani's history of gun control:

MAYOR GIULIANI AND SPEAKER VALLONE ANNOUNCE CITY LAWSUIT AGAINST GUN INDUSTRY

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and City Council Speaker Peter F. Vallone, joined by Corporation Counsel Michael Hess, today announced that the City of New York has filed a lawsuit against two dozen major gun manufacturers and distributors.

The suit alleges a number of illegal practices conducted by the gun industry, including:

Deliberately manufacturing many more firearms than can be bought for legitimate purposes such as hunting and law enforcement, and knowingly targeting these excess guns to criminals, youths and other persons unqualified to buy firearms;

Deliberately undermining New York City's gun control laws by flooding markets with looser gun laws with firearms that the manufacturers know are destined to be illegally resold in New York City;

Ignoring the illegal practices of gun distributors, many of whom openly engage in the above practices;

Refusing to manufacture safer guns, with such features as trigger locks and "personalization" measures that allow only authorized persons to fire the weapon. "This is an industry that is profiting from the suffering of innocent people,"

Mayor Giuliani said. "What's worse, its profits rest on a number of illegal and immoral practices. This lawsuit is meant to end the free pass that the gun industry has so long enjoyed."

Council Speaker Vallone said, "More than 30,000 people, including 4,200 children, die every year in the U.S. from firearms-more people than in any other country in the world. I join with the Mayor in this lawsuit to send a message to gun manufacturers that New York City will hold them accountable for their reckless and irresponsible practices."

The suit seeks an as yet unspecified amount of damages for the many ways in which these illegal practices and illegal guns harm New York City and its residents-including, for instance, the $17 million per year spent by the City Health and Hospitals Corporation treating gunshot wounds.

Defendants named in the suit include most major gun manufacturers, distributors and dealers currently operating the United States, or who export large numbers of guns to the United States.

Plaintiffs in the lawsuit are the City of New York, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, City Council Speaker Peter F. Vallone, and the Health and Hospitals Corporation.

The suit was filed in the United States District Court, Eastern District of New York.

Just a little late in his mind swap. I don't trust him.

That's right. If he wanted to run for President as a Republican, he should have been going around talking in favor of the 2nd Amendment four years ago, not after the campaign has begun.

Sorry but gun control by the states is off limits according to the 2d amendment. That's why the phrase is written; SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. It doesn't say may be infringed but shall not.

I just want CC in Wisconsin. It's NEVER going to happen in Wisconsin under current 'Rat rule. Governor Doyle *SPIT* has vetoed it three times in four years, already.

Explain to me how a gun-grabbing President Rudy helps my plight?
