Sailors have been taken back to Iran

Can't find it anywhere else.

It becomes a diplomatic incident. No military action will be taken. The same as the U.S. Navy EP-3E being detained by the Chinese.

"Whatever the rights and wrongs of military action, British forces in Iraq are now there with the authority of a UN security council resolution... and the Iranian government should be left in no doubt of the serious implications of their action," he said.

I don't know how the UK will respond but if Iran is not careful, they are likely to suffer a strongly worded rebuke from the UN over this.

If this begins to escalate, gas will hit $6 ' gal by end of next week.

About 37% of our imports come from Canada (15%), Mexico (12%), and Nigeria (8%). Only 11% comes from Saudi Arabia, and 5% from Iraq/Kuwait. The rest comes from Africa (Algeria 3%, Angola 3%), South America, Europe, and the Caribbean. We don't import any from Iran.

You have been watching too much Patriot Games. Sats don't operate like that. The Iranians patrol 24/7 in those waters. It is routine for Iranian Navy patrols to conduct right up to the waterways border zones.

Diplomacy is a essentially a delay to allow the mullahs to obtain, and position, even more nukes.

And Rams82 might have been spot on.

Here's the "Arch Duke Ferdinand" moment we've all been expecting...

A provocation from Iran that lights the fuse...

Hold on to your hats...

Hold on to your hats...

From the FOX story: In June 2004, six British marines and two sailors were seized by Iran in the Shatt al-Arab between Iran and Iraq. They were presented blindfolded on Iranian television and admitted entering Iranian waters illegally.

Hold your hats all you want...just don't hold your breath.

Not necessarily. It could be simply posturing by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. That very same morning their was a press conference in Basra in which the UK forces reiterated that Iran was behind a large proportion of the attacks against UK forces in the MNDSE. The Revolutionary Guards Force Qods forces are know to operate inside this region.

The boarding party had completed their inspection and were then arrested by the Iranians.

Noe from Kuwait or Iraq?

I appreciate your information, however, my comment was based toward "given any excuse there could be a possibility of an interruption of flow to world markets" to fuel the oil speculators.

Oil Markets

As of yet, the futures are hurriedly weighing in on the significance of the Iranian move today an possible consequences.

Just keep an eye on the oil futures today, especially if the Iranians stall on the release of the Brits and their equipment by the end of trading. I bet you we'll see gas up 25 cents/gal, minimal, by Sunday morning if no progress is made today on the release of the British personnel.

Thatcher was great.

I say we start with revoking nutjob's visa and let him know diplomatic messages will be sent through the 'tomahawk' mail service.

Iran must have a real hard on for British sailors

Given what Winston Churchill said about the British Navy you might what to rephrase that. :-)

>>>> Methinks they overestimate their chances.

Actually, they don't. If we gave them a first strike, it would be a strong one against us.

If we didn't retaliate very strongly against their logistics and support chain, as well as tactical assets, it we would be very prolonged.

If we did so attack, however, they would also attack here with unconventional means.

So what do we need to do? A REAL shock and awe, with no forewarning. If it's Iranian and it floats, sink it. If it flies, destroy it on the ground. If it rolls, squash it.

If it breaths, kill it.

PS, was at Narita Airport (Tokyo) about a week ago. An Iranian Islamic Republic Airlines 747 SP flew in (the ugly short one.) Got a close up look with some binos. Looked like dreck, leaking oil everywhere, skin patches, skin wrinkles windows all scratched, etc.

Looked like a flying Phyllis Diller.

We don't import any from Iran.

Doesn't matter, oil sells at market value.

Hot off the Dow Jones newswire. This may be nothing, it may be 1979 redux, or it may be a provocation that turns into a legitimate casus belli. Reuters reports:

LONDON, March 23 (Reuters) - Iran captured fifteen British Royal Navy personnel during a “routine boarding operation” in Iraqi waters on Friday, Britain’s Ministry of Defence said.

Iran’s ambassador in London has been summoned and Britain is demanding the immediate safe release of the sailors.

“At approximately 1030 Iraqi time this morning, 15 British naval personnel, engaged in routine boarding operations of merchant shipping in Iraqi territorial waters ... were seized by Iranian naval vessels,” the ministry said in a statement.

“We are urgently pursuing this matter with the Iranian authorities at the highest level and on the instructions of the Foreign Secretary, the Iranian ambassador has been summoned to the Foreign Office. The British government is demanding the immediate and safe return of our people and equipment.”

Fifteen Royal Navy sailors have been seized by Iranian warships in Iraqi territorial waters, the Ministry of Defence said.

Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett has summoned the Iranian ambassador in London to demand their immediate release, a spokesman said.

The incident happened following a routine inspection of a merchant ship off Iraq.

The MoD said the incident happened at around 10.30am local time.

"The boarding party had completed a successful inspection of a merchant ship when they and their two boats were surrounded and escorted by Iranian vessels into Iranian territorial waters," a spokesman said.

"We are urgently pursuing this matter with the Iranian authorities at the highest level and on the instructions of the Foreign Secretary, the Iranian ambassador has been summoned to the Foreign Office.

"The British Government is demanding the immediate and safe return of our people and equipment."

Trying to divert attention from the fact that Iranians have been supplying fighters and weapons to the terrorists in Iraq--and we're proving it?
