Woman buys over $1K in tainted pet food

BEAUFORT, S.C. -- A woman said she was so worried about reports of tainted pet food she spent more than $1,000 buying all the product she could find at her local Wal-Mart. Margaret Trask said she filled a shopping cart full of canned pet food made by Canadian company Menu Foods at the Beaufort Wal-Mart after hearing about the recall Friday.

She returned Wednesday morning to buy more food and came back that night to buy even more, but Trask said store officials asked her to leave. She said store employees were taking some of the food off the shelves.

Trask plans to throw the food away so no animals eat it. She figures she spent more than $1,000.

Some of the 60 million cans and pouches of food have been blamed for kidney failure in scores of animals and killed at least 16 pets.

Not all the food Trask bought was included in the recall.

Trask also took out classified ads in at least two local newspapers, listing all off the recall pet food brands.

"A lot of people don't know about the recall," Trask said. "I don't know what else to do."

Did she have a talk with someone who refused to remove the tainted food?

My ex-mother-in-law had words with the management at her local store, because they hadn't removed the food and then gave her attitude when she asked why they hadn't.

sad how some people will bend over backwards to protect animals... and if I had $1000 I'd be willing to bet that she is a strong advocate for "woman's choice" to feed her unborn baby stuff that will the baby.

But why wasn't the tainted pet food removed?

Because it wasn't tainted?

She should have just given me the money and I would have taken care of everything for her.

Geez, not one shred of empathy in a post yet here, so I'll go. Yes, the lady seems eccentric, but in being so was trying to HELP others by sparing their pets. I'd rather have "nuts" like that running around than the careless, inept, and selfish grocers whom I myself have encountered that don't give a hoot about the recall and are not rushing to get the deadly product off the shelves.

I have encountered over a dozen clients that are looking for a free lunch over this incident. They are bringing their animals in (that have not been to a vet in over five to fifteen years) and claiming that the pet food is making their animals sick...so far I have had renal failure (3) without the dog food matching up, a heart failure dog, a heartworm dog and one that was just flat being eaten to death by worms. These folks are making me ill....

A f-cking retard. Typical of those who love animals just as much, if not more than people.

Any evidence in this article that the woman was planning on bringing sick animals into a clinic to trump up a claim? Nope.

I'd agree with you that there are *way* too many people in this country looking to use the court system as a way to cash in.

However, I think it's also human nature to (over)react to problems once they've been identified. It's entirely possible that many pet owners are now simply hyperalert to any problems that their pets may exhibit.

Keep in mind, too, that when people are scared, they do stupid things. I can cut some slack for the honest people who are just scared for their pets --- but I have no tolerance whatsoever for people who would knowingly attempt to bilk someone out of money through a bogus lawsuit.

Next week she'll buy $1000 in carbon credits to save the polar bears.

Hmmm, that gives me an idea.....

It amazes me how, no matter what the topic, someone on FR can always manage to bring abortion into the thread.

Amazing what a one-track-mind will do.

Shopping for a lawsuit maybe, her poor pets...

Bingo. I thought that was the reason she bought so much.

Srry, no money in dead animals except their resale value. Watching Judge Judy on a daily basis has taught me as much.
