Edwards to Suspend Campaign (Update: Wife's cancer has returned - Does not suspend Campaign)
The Politico ^ | March 22, 2007 | Ben Smith

Posted on 03/22/2007 8:23:49 AM PDT by kddid

John Edwards is suspending his campaign for President, and may drop out completely, because his wife has suffered a recurrence of the cancer that sickened her in 2004, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, an Edwards friend told The Politico.

"At a minimum he's going to suspend" the campaign, the source said. "Nobody knows precisely how serious her recurrence is. It’ll be another couple of days before there’s complete clarity."

"For him right now he has one priority which is her health and the security of the two young children," said the friend.

As for the campaign, "You don't shut this machine off completely, but everything will go on hold."

Reading on another thread, I did not notice that he did not touch her during his little presser.

How did it get that far when she was being monitored? Can it appear and spread that fast between intervals?

Cancer cells migrate silently through the lymphatic system and blood stream. In the case of invasive ductal breast cancer, the cancerous cells can spread even before the primary site is identified. Breast cancer has the potential to spread to almost any region of the body. The most common region is bone, followed by the lung, liver and brain.

After my son returned from serving as a combat soldier in Iraq he was diagnosed with sarcoma and went through two years of hell between major surgery, chemo and radiation. (He has now defied all odds and is in his 3rd year "cancer-free")

I honestly don't know what in the world John Edwards is thinking - I hope he reconsiders for her sake.

I'm not surprised by their press conference and I'm not surprised they want to continue with the campaign

She wants him to be President just as much as he wants it .. they both have been working towards this goal since he was elected to the Senate

Though .. if they continue with this while she is home dying .. then he deserves to be ripped big time for being so selfish of putting his wants before his wife's needs

I have no idea what she thinks or knows about the treatment "they said" she is going to receive. Not curable, but treatable.

I'm so suspicious of him and his lust for power, I am sitting here pondering several possibilites.

Do you really think that people who cite FreeRepublic as vile and hateful, and say nothing about Democratic Underground, have actually visited and read from both sites?

Probably not. And, you are correct....you have to see DU to believe it.

From what Elizabeth said at the press conference, the treatments will not make her as sick as her last round of Chemo. FWIW...

I agree with you. I think we're jumping to too many conclusions without knowing more about what's going on. I also think it's highly possible that Elizabeth wants the campaign to go on, if for no other reason than to try and convince herself that life will go on as before. She has to deal with this news and everything doesn't get all worked out at once. I don't see that it's such a loving thing at all for her husband to shut his life down and take her on a cruise. That shouts "you're gonna die, honey." They have a lot of thinking and soul searching to do. The children will figure in a lot and I figure that they will end the campaign after they've thought it through and get more info from the doctors, unless the prognosis is much better than it looks to be at this point. I wish them both well.

No, we don't; I often wonder if I could be as brave as she was. I doubt it........LOL.

The more I think of this and what cancer patients go through, the madder I am getting.

Sure we all went on with our normal live, but we were NOT flying all over the country 24/7 for 365 days a year; we worked 9 to 5 jobs and were together nights and weekends.

As a family; not as a new item.

"You write: Please, please, please refrain from saying asinine things that justify every caricature of conservatives.

I am offended that you would put us in the same league as liberals. I doubt if you will find anything posted here other than people praying for her well being.......whether you had posted that plea or not."

WRONG!! I see many unnecessary comments being made here.

That's because they won't be using the drug of first choice again.

Wanting is one thing, assessing his realistic chances is quite another. They're both educated people. They both know his chances are next to zero.

I'll still give him the benefit of the doubt for a little while.

The worst part of the news conference was when Edwards said that there are those who want us to cower in the corner, we will not cower in the corner.

Talk about turning her illness political. Blechh.
