Following Wade's death, Edwards and his wife chose to have children again: Emma Claire, born when Elizabeth was 48 years old in 1998, and Jack, born when Elizabeth was 50 in 2000. Elizabeth was pregnant with Emma Claire during the 1998 Senate race. Emma Claire and Jack were born to Elizabeth in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where the family now resides.

Excellent advice...I haven't read this thread yet, but I hope it was followed.

Others may feel, like I do, that it's a sign of utter selfishness on his part. It's not like he needs the $400,000 per year salary the Presidency pays in order to pay his wife's medical bills. I'm giving him the benefit of doubt for now till this news settles into reality and they realize her health isn't as great as they hoped
Now if he continue the campaign .. especially if she is at home dying .. then he'll be a selfish POS

Yes, she was; NIH protocols at Chapel Hill. She just decided that others who came before her enabled her to benefit from their treatments and that if she could, those after her would benefit from hers.
After she died, I read through some of the medical reports and the papers she had to sign basically said, "I'm aware I have no chance of survival, so go ahead and do whatever you want to me."
I don't know if I could have signed them.

What was the purpose of this news conference today if not to promote himself and jump start his sorry and sagging campaign?
Cancer of the bone sounds serious to me, and by that I mean, serious enough to at least "suspend" his campaign, but he's not doing that either.

Hope she gets well. Until they figure out the extent of her illness, suspend vs cancel seems reasonable.

I checked over at DUmmieland...there are a bunch of threads with people posting that they are sending money today to Edwards' campaign.

Just like out of a romance novel, the young "cute" candidate wins on a groundswell of goodwill/admiration/morbid curiosity.

It has been my contention that Politico.com was created to get a dem in the White House in '08. Politico reports first that Edwards is suspending the campaign. Then Edwards announces he is not.
Wow, what strong people the Edwardses are and how much they love their country to fight for it while fighting this terrible disease and not doing what any decent couple would do.
A blot on Politico for getting it wrong? I don't think so. I think the whole thing was planned to "frame" the debate over his staying in.

Treatment is targeted to slow the progress of the disease. How did it get that far when she was being monitored? Can it appear and spread that fast between intervals?

I'm thinking things will change once the treatment starts. Some doctor needs to make sure Edwards is aware of what is ahead of them. Perhaps doctors are afraid to let him know because he'll likely sue them, I don't know, but to think you can "manage" brest cancer when it has gone this far is insane.

I am stunned. Simply stunned. I can't imagine continuing the campaign.
They are simply not dealing with this the way normal people would.
There is nothing else to say.

Let me get this straight.
John Edwards had a press conference to announce that his wife's cancer has metastasized to the bone, and that he's leaving her side to run a presidential campaign??
Did I get that right?
