Edwards to Suspend Campaign (Update: Wife's cancer has returned - Does not suspend Campaign)
The Politico ^ | March 22, 2007 | Ben Smith

Posted on 03/22/2007 8:23:49 AM PDT by kddid

John Edwards is suspending his campaign for President, and may drop out completely, because his wife has suffered a recurrence of the cancer that sickened her in 2004, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, an Edwards friend told The Politico.

"At a minimum he's going to suspend" the campaign, the source said. "Nobody knows precisely how serious her recurrence is. It’ll be another couple of days before there’s complete clarity."

"For him right now he has one priority which is her health and the security of the two young children," said the friend.

As for the campaign, "You don't shut this machine off completely, but everything will go on hold."

It's not family first. It's John first.

C'mon now...It's Country first. At least that's what they say.

And we all know that's absolute horsecrap.

They need prayer, for sure.

My concern, Elizabeth went through midlife hormone treatments so she could have more babies.... she was over 40 at the time.

Well and good, but why not be with them at this time?

Have you ever been close to a campaign?

The candidate's life is not his/her own....it's continuous phone calls, meetings, traveling, press, etc. etc.

They are extremely rich.....

...Why pursue this?

What will the children remember?....Time with mom & dad...

..or time with nannies?

IMO, their priorities need adjusting.

I'm not alone to suggest this was a photo op.

Mr. Edwards said he learned earlier this week that the cancer had reappeared in his wife’s rib cage and that the couple recognized that it was no longer curable, though it could be managed with treatment.

So they recognize it can't be cured and he's still continuing with his campaign. He's not in denial then, for those giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Is this normal turnaound time now for such things or am I being naive because he's a presidential candidate and they're assured of getting velvet glove treatment that we peons could never get?

See my post 348 on that.

He's going to carry on while she undergoes therepy alone? You and I BOTH know what that's like, she's not going to have her husband with her to help her through that, what about helping the kids get through it?

I can believe a poster could be banned from Democratic Underground for being polite and rational. I didn't see much politenss on the site, and absolutely no rationality. Still, I was amazed at just how much genuine insanity there is at DU, and I continue to be surprised that a presidential candidate would have no problem associating himself with DU. Don't the Edwards care what the moderates and independents would think? Not all presidential voters are maddog liberals, after all. (Btw, I admire you for having the courage to post on the site. I would be banned too fast to make the time taken to register worthwhile.)

My friend's husband goes with her to all of her chemo treatments, some of them (like today's) are 7 hours long. He reads aloud to her or he rents movies and shows them to her on a portable DVD player.

She couldn't do this alone and he wouldn't let her do it alone. And they don't even have little kids to worry about.

This is pure selfishness on John's part.

No she's not. I pray for her recovery and for the Lord to have mercy on her but she's not a child of God by any stretch of the imagination.

Uhhh, what exact denomination are you a preacher of? I want to avoid it like the plague.

Oh my. December? Do you live in Canada? We lost a friend there who had to wait 3 months for his followup. He died a two weeks before his appointment. That's the way it works there - didn't know this was the way here. What did you end up doing? I assume/hope it was all ok?

No kidding. When the October mammovan found a shadow on one of mine a couple of years ago, I couldn't even get the followup appointment they said I needed till December.

Not, only that, but she has a history of breast problems so she should have been having a mammogram at least once a year. Did she not do this? Or wouldn't this have shown up?

All the news media thought Edwards would be announcing the suspension of his campaign as that is the right thing to do.

He is truly despicable.

I'm not so sure his poll numbers will go up. I think a lot of women will look at his continuance of the campaign as a selfish move. It's almost as if he said: "I am continuing with my campaign. Oh! and by the way, my wife has terminal cancer."

I thought the same thing. I pray for their family and for Elizabeth Edwards, but how narcissistic of Edwards to continue...how about taking care of your family. The country does not need you as much as they do!

It will be interesting how the media pundits handle this. Undoubtedly, some will portray John as heroic for continuing his campaign in the face of family adversity.

Others may feel, like I do, that it's a sign of utter selfishness on his part. It's not like he needs the $400,000 per year salary the Presidency pays in order to pay his wife's medical bills.

Heck, if he times her death just right during the primary season, he can turn it into a Wellstone event. All politicians will be obligated to attend the funeral and pay homage.

The whole thing disgusts me.

Patsy Ramsey had stage IV ovarian cancer too and lived another 12 years.

I have no doubt, considering who we are talking about..that the doctors worked extra fast on her diagnosis.

I am not being critical...just realistic.

Same here. I was quite surprised at the (incorrect) announcement that he was suspending his campaign because I didn't think he would be unselfish enough. Well, as it turns out...

OTOH, wouldn't it be better for him to be honest and open about it than to give Hitlery and Obama ammo?

BLIND ambition is right...he doesn't have a chance to win...but he is going to leave her while she is going through this....

I say he is a bastard.
