Edwards to Suspend Campaign (Update: Wife's cancer has returned - Does not suspend Campaign)
The Politico ^ | March 22, 2007 | Ben Smith

Posted on 03/22/2007 8:23:49 AM PDT by kddid

John Edwards is suspending his campaign for President, and may drop out completely, because his wife has suffered a recurrence of the cancer that sickened her in 2004, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, an Edwards friend told The Politico.

"At a minimum he's going to suspend" the campaign, the source said. "Nobody knows precisely how serious her recurrence is. It’ll be another couple of days before there’s complete clarity."

"For him right now he has one priority which is her health and the security of the two young children," said the friend.

As for the campaign, "You don't shut this machine off completely, but everything will go on hold."

Please, please, please refrain from saying asinine things that justify every caricature of conservatives.

There are people who are offended by the idea that strangers would pray for them. Hopefully the Edwards aren't among that group (though I'll bet lunch his erstwhile bloggers are). Prayers for her wellbeing, and emotional strength for her family.

"Anyone know if Breast cancer jumping into the bones goes through the lymph system? "

It probably first gets into the lymphatics - the fluid in the lymphatic system eventually drains into the blood stream in the region of the left collarbone - but tumor generally spreads to the bones by way of the bloodstream.

Breast cancer likes to spread to the bones; it can sometimes be very indolent there, but it can also be very aggressive. Usually it gets treated with hormonal therapy if the tumor makes estrogen or progesterone receptors (if her tumor did, she would probably already have been on one of these medicines, such as Tamoxifen, but would now be changed to a new hormonal agent, such as an aromatase inhibitor) and with bisphosphonates, agents which stabilize the bone from destruction, such as Zometa. Radiation therapy may also be used for locally destructive lesions, and chemo may be employed, depending on what prior therapy she's had, and where else the disease is.

It was the pain from the rib fracture that caused her to seek medical assistance.

Ironic, isn't it, that they now need the prayers of those very Christians.

And *they* are very different. Patients who are successful malpractice attorneys don't have to wait agonizing days for serious test results as we do. They are "special".

That aside, I wish anyone with cancer my very best.

Once its metastasized doesnt it go into the blood and everywhere or can it stay in the bone ? can it be surgically removed in the bone or is chemo the only option?

A friend of mine was receiving radiation for bone cancer when I was receiving it for lung cancer. So they do treat bone cancer with radiation but he wasn't receiving Chemo which leads me to believe that it doesn't work for bone cancer.

I join with all those who are praying, and wishing Ms. Edwards the absolute best. Prayers also for her husband, and for her beautiful children.

I haven't been able to follow this whole thread, so someone may have posted this already. Elizabeth Edwards is a DUer, and posts under her own name. In her very first post she assured the DUers that she reads their site regularly, and that she and John appreciate their support. I wouldn't consider this noteworthy except that I have been lurking on DU for a few weeks now, and I have simply been overwhelmed by the truly obscene levels of hatred, vitriol, ignorance and immaturity that pervade the site. It is a supremely grotesque place, and I personally find it both odd and surprising that Ms. Edwards would openly confess to being a supporter of it.

Exactly. There was no reason to hold a major press conference to announce the campaign will continue. It was a sick, sick publicity stunt by a truly awful guy.

I love how the libtards at Kos were saying he was "so brave" for suspending his campaign are now saying hes "so brave" for not suspending it.

Basicly, Edwards eating beef jerky would be considered "so brave" by these morons.

Don't they get hardship leave when there are problems with the family? That is what I was referring to.

Regardless of what anyone thinks of his politics, IMO they handled the press conference w/candor and class. I wish her well as she and her family face this battle against incurable but treatable cancer.

Would it be like multiple myeloma?

Not really, except that both are treatable, and neither is curable.

I have a question. I haven't had the news on all morning and just turned it on to see the horrible news about Elizabeth Edwards.

The anchor on FNC said that she has Stage 4 cancer and that Edwards is not suspending his campaign.

This article says he is suspending his campaign.

Which is the truth.
