Edwards to Suspend Campaign (Update: Wife's cancer has returned - Does not suspend Campaign)
The Politico ^ | March 22, 2007 | Ben Smith

Posted on 03/22/2007 8:23:49 AM PDT by kddid

John Edwards is suspending his campaign for President, and may drop out completely, because his wife has suffered a recurrence of the cancer that sickened her in 2004, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, an Edwards friend told The Politico.

"At a minimum he's going to suspend" the campaign, the source said. "Nobody knows precisely how serious her recurrence is. It’ll be another couple of days before there’s complete clarity."

"For him right now he has one priority which is her health and the security of the two young children," said the friend.

As for the campaign, "You don't shut this machine off completely, but everything will go on hold."

I'm sorry to hear about his wife.

I would have preferred that he stay in the race, frankly, as his goofy politics and personnel gaffes made him an easy target.

But I wouldn't wish cancer even on my worst enemey.

May Almighty God bless and watch over Mrs. Edwards.

This is horrible! Man I hope she gets better. I don't give a darn about their politics at this moment. They seem like a very loving couple and a very nice family. At least his priorities on this is right. Hopefully she will make a full recovery. Prayers out to the Edwards family.

I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and say he's got his priorities straight, here. However, if he returns to the campaign at a later date and uses this to push healthcare as an issue, a la Christopher Reeve.....all restraints on criticism are off.

I considered all that last night, but decided that if he did that, it would be all too obvious and he would be savaged.

I am thinking it must have come back big time.

I heard a rumor that she was posting anonymously on the DU boards to berate them for wishing Laura Ingram ill when Laura was diagnosed. If true, definitely a classy move.

She didn't post anonymously. They knew who she was. I read that thread.

I am sorry to hear about his wife. While I disagree with him politically, I wish a full recovery for his wife.

I don't really feel comfortable reacting to information from an anonymous gossip. If there's "news," it should come from the source.

Prayers for his wife and for him.

I wonder why he needed the press release with the joint photo. Why did he even need to be in front of the cameras with his sick wife.

The press release and picture would have been more than enough. He says he is stopping his campaign because of a serious illness in the family we give him the benefit of his statement at face value.

I would find it VERY unlikely somebody would fake cancer for political reasons.

Sympathy for Mrs. Edwards is warranted, but The Silky Pony is such a sleazeball, cynicism is awfully hard to avoid.

Edwards gets no credit for this move other than political common sense. If he stays in, he looks heartless, if he drops out, he doesn't get to play any more. Note that they are very carefully couching this as a suspension. I, for one, will hold fire until all of this plays out.

Given that we've seen how the press distorts almost every word they hear, that's wise advice.
