From CNN (take with grain of salt):

Michael, who is from Greensboro, North Carolina, had remained with an adult at the campsite Saturday while other Scouts went for a hike, said Bauer of the park service. Michael was one of seven adults and four boys on the trip.

Dave Craft, assistant scoutmaster, said Michael stayed behind because his feet got cold after playing in a creek. He was tired and wasn't feeling well, said Craft, who left the group Saturday afternoon on business.

When the other Scouts returned, they ate lunch with Michael, who later disappeared from the camp, Bauer said.

Once Scouts and their leaders noticed that Michael was not in camp, they began a search and, within a half-hour, called the park service, Bauer said.

Praise God. God is faithful. We should also pray for our president just as diligently as for this boy. Bush needs our prayers and we can do wonders on our knees before God. The dems don't know what real power is!!!

Those of us "reluctant to call a twelve-year old a 'little child'7" are definitely not mommy's...

I completely agree with that remark: We're very proud Scouts/ former Scouts, who are very confident that those young men are being trained in ways you apparently are not familiar with.

From his father's comments, it was clear that he was similarly confident in his son's ability and resourcefulness. I'll trust he knows what he was talking about.

Those who belittle the Boy Scouts have no idea how great an influence it can have in a person's life, and at a young age. Though I'm intimately familiar with 5 girls who were in Girl Scouts, that is not comparable: it seems that experience is seldom as comprehensive as that given by Boy Scouts.

TC: glad you agree ...

I can see no logical connection between the idea that man has contributed to climate change, and the existence of some large predators in our wilderness areas. If a kid goes missing in an area inhabited by large predators and his body is never found despite an assiduous search by hundreds of determined volunteers, aircraft, search dogs, etc., and the area contains 45-pound coyotes and 100-pound mountain lions, why would it be a reach to think that a predator might have taken him? Why do you have a problem with this?

Now Fox News is saying the kid was found less than 1/2 mile from the camp. Something is not right. Maybe he was trying to hide from a scout leader.......

The report I heard said a mile and a half.

My take on this ... this kid was avoiding rescuers, they saturated the area and he was found within a mile of where he first went missing. There is something very odd about this story ... and spare me the drivel about how rugged the terrain is in the area, I'm experienced with the outdoors, a scout myself many years ago and still an outdoor enthusiast.

Get real, everything is done by God! Don't get me going on you people who do not know that. Only answer is some day you WILL!

IMO, with lecturing statements like that, 'you people'...give Christians a negative reputation.

God had nothing to do with this.

The kid exercised his FREE WILL to hide for a couple of days because he craved attention and love...at least according to #80 from AppyPappy

Oh, my God. Please forgive me for referring to a 12-year-old who still has a baby face as a "little child." I am so abjectly sorry. I'm on my virtual knees here, weeping and tearing my clothes with anguished guilt. < /s>

In fact my son is a Scout. He joined a great troop last year. During his first Scout camping trip ever the overnight temps went down to four above zero, and he came back a different person. Since then he's learned a huge amount about taking care of himself in tough conditions and I'm so grateful to his scoutmaster and assistant scoutmaster.

He wants to be a Marine and I'm doing all I can as a mom to encourage him in his goal. I bought him a bb gun, a good bow, a knife, and all the other non-pc stuff he needs, and when he gets slightly better grades he'll get a .22. But he and his buddies still like to act like young children sometimes, and since I'm four times as old as they are I do think of my son as a little boy. I'll probably still think of him as my boy when he's a big hairy man on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The article says 5'4", 110. Same size as my Bill (and me, if I skip supper tonight.)

It's true that there's a considerable variance in maturity among boys who are the same age and the same size. In fact, there's often a considerable variance in maturity in the same boy on the same day!

I think this story (assuming the MSM info is more or less true) illustrates this point very well. On the one hand, the young man took off on his own and ignored (or hadn't been taught, or hadn't been reminded lately) the basic "what to do if you're lost" rules. On the other hand, he made it through three days in the woods in pretty good shape, so his training and instinct kicked in at some point.

Hopefully he will draw the right conclusions from his experience. ("Breaking rules and doing foolish things gets a lot of attention!" is not the right conclusion.)

AppyPappy's #80 was part of a sideline discussion on Eric Rudolph.

A friend of mine has a 12 year old son. He was terrified, I mean TERRIFIED of storms and loud noises. Did I mention terrified?

He went to Scout camp where they had a whopper of a storm come rambling through. He toughed it out.

When he got home, a little storm was coming through and his mom wondered why he didn't head for the basement. He said, "Mom, that's just a little storm, nothing like the one at scout camp in a tent."

He came back a different young man.

Congratulations.

You've begun to witness a revolution in your child.

After a couple years, you'll realize that those little boys you're used to seeing around town, even though they might be over 20, were not Scouts.

(PS: when I was seventeen, I was TEACHING survival skills to a couple hundred of them a year... I've seen how it makes a difference!)

He came back a different young man.

I brought home a black kid from Cub Scout camp once. We didn't figure it out until after he had a bath. I had to drive all the way back to swap him.
