Augusta, ME (LifeNews.com) -- The state of Maine already gives over $1 million annually to Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, which does abortions in the northeastern state. But some state legislators say that's not enough and they want the legislature to approve a bill that would spend $283,000 to directly fund poor women's abortions.
Maine Democrat Senate President Betheda Edmonds is the main sponsor of the measure, LD 1309, which is slated for a public hearing later this spring.
The bill has the support of pro-abortion groups such as the Family Planning Association of Maine and the Maine Women's Lobby but pro-life organizations like Maine Right to Life and the Catholic Diocese of Portland will strongly oppose the bill.
The Christian Civic League of Maine also opposes the measure and Mike Health, the group's director, talked about his group's position in a recent Bangor Daily News interview.
"Its immoral for us to have abortion, period," he said, but "to think that Christian, tax-paying [Maine] citizens will be forced to pay for abortions is absolutely unconscionable, its beyond wrong."
Heath says the bill already has the support of legislators on both sides of the aisle as four Maine Republican legislators are co-sponsoring the bill.
Included as current co-sponsors of the abortion funding bill are: State Senator Peter Mills (R-Somerset County), State Rep. Abigail Holman (R-Fayette), State Rep. Roberta M. Muse (R-Fryeburg), and State Rep. Meredith N. Strang Burgess (R-Cumberland).
Heath says that appears to contradict a new platform of the Maine Republican Party which supports parental notification on abortion as a way to limit abortions. Tax funding of abortions would likely increase the number of abortions in the state.

Glad to see that Maine is slowly catching up to us.
(end sarcasm)
And what about any Catholics or others that may resent their moneys being spent on the killing of babies?
Are they not going to fight this in any court?
Hey Mr. Republican president, you had the majorities of both houses. Just why is partial birth abortion STILL available?
So much hope, so disappointed.
And yet I am told by self-identified conservative FReepers every day that I should get excited about an openly pro-infanticide GOP candidate.
I'd pay to sterilize them, but I suppose that's going to be an unpopular remark too.

Abortion Greeting Cards Strike Sour Note
A line of greeting cards targeting women who have had an abortion stirred up trouble when an apparent typo reminded some recipients of one of the more gruesome aspects of certain abortion procedures. The errant line on one of
the e-cards designed by a California group called Exhale was May you find piece after your abortion.
This typo has conjured up images of dismembered fetuses, said Howard Cutter, CEO of Exhale. This is not the message we wanted to convey. Were trying to bring calm and peace to women who have made the difficult decision
to terminate an unwanted pregnancy.
I gave this e-card to my girlfriend on account of she didnt want to have an abortion, but I kinda persuaded her to do it, you know, explained Sonny Hertz, a dissatisfied customer who says hes been contacted by a lawyer regarding filing a lawsuit against Exhale. She freaked out when she read
it. Called me a sick bastard and said she never wanted to see me again. Ive been hurt. Someones got to pay to ease my pain.
How can we be sued? Cutter demanded to know. Were providing a public service. Its free for Christs sake. How can we be liable?

Why the drop after 1960? (in deaths of women from illegal abortions)
The reasons were new and better antibiotics, better surgery and the establishment of intensive care units in hospitals. This was in the face of a rising population. Between 1967 and 1970 sixteen states legalized abortion. In most it was limited, only for rape, incest and severe fetal handicap (life of mother was legal in all states). There were two big exceptions California in 1967, and New York in 1970 allowed abortion on demand. Now look at the chart carefully.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Abortion Statistics - Decision to Have an Abortion (U.S.)
· 25.5% of women deciding to have an abortion want to postpone childbearing
· 21.3% of women cannot afford a baby
· 14.1% of women have a relationship issue or their partner does not want a child
· 12.2% of women are too young (their parents or others object to the pregnancy)
· 10.8% of women feel a child will disrupt their education or career
· 7.9% of women want no (more) children
· 3.3% of women have an abortion due to a risk to fetal health
2.8% of women have an abortion due to a risk to maternal health
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So how many womens lives have been saved by abortion?
Only about 3% of abortions since 1972 were reported to be due to a risk to maternal health. A reasonable person would recognize that not all of those cases represent a lethal risk. But lets say they did. That means that nearly 45 million fetuses were butchered to save the lives of about 1.3 million women. Or put another way; 35 babies are killed to save each woman.
Abortion was legal in all 50 states prior to Roe v. Wade in cases of danger to the life of the woman.

You would think that Maine Catholics would complain about this but they probably don't recognize the Pope, anyway. The Nanny state gone amuck.
Please FreepMail me if you want on or off my Pro-Life Ping List.
If I lived in Maine, I might have to move because I would not want my tax dollars to fund legalized killing of children in their mothers'wombs.
You won't get any flames from me. I've never understood the logical leap from "life is a miracle" to "discouraging irresponsible breeding is murder."
Discouraging breeding isn't murder, that's what kids without fathers do when they grow up.

Its interesting that Germany looked to the US for its ideas on eugenics.
Excerpt from link:
Though they couldn't possible know it, the children of the Fernald State School were the victims of bad science and a newly developed bureaucracy designed to save America from the so-called "menace of the feebleminded." Beginning early in the twentieth century, United States health officials used crude versions of the modern IQ tests to identify supposedly "deficient" children and lock them away. The idea was to protect society from potential criminals and to prevent so-called undesirables from having children and degrading the American gene pool......
...... It reveals the danger in misguided science, the fearsome power of unchecked bureaucracies,
What does this say about The Maine Legislature?
Great statistics there. Thanks.
You are welcome. May it reach those who need to see it the most.
Well...
...it WILL be cheaper than supporting 'the chilrun' for the next 18 years!
(And their chilrun after them and....)
