Rudy Giuliani Could be Just the Ticket for Social Conservatives
American Thinker ^ | March 19, 2007 | J. Peter Mulhern

Can America's mayor win support from enough social conservatives to win the Republican nomination?

Maybe not, but social conservatives should think long and hard before they decide to pass on Giuliani. This may be difficult advice to credit. Giuliani is thoroughly alienated from the dominant concerns of the social right.

Mayor Giuliani delivered what they needed most. He reclaimed New York City from the toxic leftism of his predecessors but in the process identified himself with the moral elements of their leftism.

social conservatives are concerned about social rot and Giuliani is one of the very few executives in the history of the world with a record of reversing rot. This is appealing.

On September 11, 2001 and the days that followed he auditioned for commander in chief and the audition went well. This too is appealing. If we don't bestir ourselves to win our war with Islamic fascism, the moral state of our civilization won't matter. We won't be around to wallow in sin.

Social conservatives could benefit from the presidency of someone who agrees with them less but fights for them more. This is the crux of Giuliani's appeal to the social right and every other Republican constituency. He is a fighter, and Republicans of all sorts are sick and tired of turning the other cheek and seeking common cause with the enemy both at home and abroad.

The level of rational thought and logic is undergoing a serious decline at the hands of the Rudyphiles.

This piece is a bad joke.

Yes yes yes yes. I couldn't have said it better myself.

This dude actually manages to put into words why conservatives like me are enthusiastic about a Giuliani candidacy. Its just a GUT FEELING, but this guy put it into words that all the naysayers can understand.

Let the weeping and gnashing of teeth begin!!! (Which is the norm when someone hits a nail on the head)....

"Giuliani's career in electoral politics began in New York City where moral decay was both far enough advanced to be immune from direct attack and eclipsed by other more immediate concerns. Giuliani couldn't have done any good by preaching to New Yorkers about the value of human life and the teleology of sex. They needed someone to protect their lives from rampant crime and their livings from a local government that had been determined to beggar them all.

He is a fighter,

So, what's he going to fight for? The kind of liberal policies he's always advocated?

"Most of Clinton's policies are very similar to most of mine."

Or are you claiming that he will fight to protect us from the predations of liberal politicians like him?

Stupidity on parade.

1,500,000,000 rounds of posts, arguments, insults, cheesy graphics, name calling, and ad hominem personal attacks that pass as debate for the FUTURE OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!

"Introducing first, to my right, fighting out of the red corner, wearing their Sunday best with a gold crucifix...weighing in at 810 and 1/4 pounds...the social conservatives, the religious right, the champions of family values...from the Southern States...The Evangelicals!" (wild applause)

"And in the blue corner, wearing an off the rack suit, Goldwater ’64 lapel pin and a belt 2 sizes too small...weighing in at 141 pounds soaking wet...the fiscal conservatives, the last champions of limited government...from the Western States...The Libertarians!" (wild applause)

I don’t know how Rudy always manages to be in the wrong (right) place at the right (wrong) time. First in the middle of 9/11 and then this battle between the social and fiscal conservatives.

Chapter 1: Live From the Reagan Building

I’m not even sure that the “combatants” in this debate on FR understand how important it is. IF YOU READ NOTHING ELSE, READ PAGE 19 OF SAGERS’ BOOK. It discusses a Giuliani candidacy in an almost Nostradamus-like prophecy. In the interest of full disclosure, Sager is a NE, NYC conservative. In some parts of the country, what we call a "conservative" they call a pinko commie.

Rudy is a leader and a doer.

He stood up to the ACLU and other leftist organization and cleaned up NYC, despite of how they tried to stop him.

"Cleaning up NYC" is an ironic talking point tonight, as a riot over a basketball game rages in Times Square.

"After several face-to-face meetings, Vitter said he believes Giuliani would not as president "advance some kind of liberal social agenda." Instead, Vitter said, he is convinced Giuliani would appoint conservatives to the federal judiciary.

"Obviously, I disagree with Rudy on some very significant social issues," Vitter said. "The most important thing the next president will do on these issues is appoint federal judges, and Rudy has stated clearly to me and to the world that he'll appoint strict-constructionist judges, who apply the law as written and not legislate from the bench."

Giuliani's a guy who thinks Roe was good law. Trusting him with judges would be like trusting Bill Clinton with policing the interns' dormitories.

State GOP lining up behind Giuliani. He's won support among California conservatives (& nationally)

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1802442/posts

With the presidential election less than two years away, a handful of California lawmakers are already rallying around former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani for the Republican nomination.

Among them: conservative Reps. Jerry Lewis of Redlands and Devin Nunes of Visalia and moderate Rep. Mary Bono of Palm Springs

They include Bill Simon, a former Republican candidate for governor and longtime friend, and Steve Frank, publisher of California Political News and Views, a conservative Web site.

Giuliani's popularity among conservatives despite his more liberal position on social issues is not just a California phenomenon.

A recent Time magazine poll shows Giuliani, dubbed "America's mayor" for his leadership after the Sept. 11 attacks, leading Sen. John McCain of Arizona by a 2-1 margin among white "born-again" Christians.

"Giuliani so far musters the most confidence among the Republican faithful," said Bill Whalen, a research fellow at Hoover Institution at Stanford University.
