Rudy Giuliani Could be Just the Ticket for Social Conservatives
American Thinker ^ | March 19, 2007 | J. Peter Mulhern

Posted on 03/18/2007 11:17:46 PM PDT by FairOpinion

Can America's mayor win support from enough social conservatives to win the Republican nomination?

Maybe not, but social conservatives should think long and hard before they decide to pass on Giuliani. This may be difficult advice to credit. Giuliani is thoroughly alienated from the dominant concerns of the social right.

Mayor Giuliani delivered what they needed most. He reclaimed New York City from the toxic leftism of his predecessors but in the process identified himself with the moral elements of their leftism.

social conservatives are concerned about social rot and Giuliani is one of the very few executives in the history of the world with a record of reversing rot. This is appealing.

On September 11, 2001 and the days that followed he auditioned for commander in chief and the audition went well. This too is appealing. If we don't bestir ourselves to win our war with Islamic fascism, the moral state of our civilization won't matter. We won't be around to wallow in sin.

Social conservatives could benefit from the presidency of someone who agrees with them less but fights for them more. This is the crux of Giuliani's appeal to the social right and every other Republican constituency. He is a fighter, and Republicans of all sorts are sick and tired of turning the other cheek and seeking common cause with the enemy both at home and abroad.

Drama queens on FR spouting their canned rhetoric repeatedly doesn't make something so and I'm delighted that FR does not represent the average conservative in America.

Social conservatives should hear him out. He just might represent a rare opportunity which won't be repeated any time soon.

..I've heard him out--there is nothing more to be said, but no...

Yet, on the Fox News show, Giuliani said that he supports a ban on partial-birth abortion as long as there is a provision to protect the life of the mother.

"If it has provision for the life of the mother, then I would support it," he told the Fox News program.

Washington, D.C. – The House of Representatives yesterday passed H.R. 760, the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003, by a margin of 282-139. Congressman Duncan Hunter (CA-52), who is a cosponsor of the legislation, proudly voted in favor of this measure which prohibits medical doctors, except in situations where the LIFE OF THE MOTHER is threatened, from utilizing certain procedures that involve the partial delivery of a living unborn baby, killing the child, then completing the delivery

When Rudy took office the violent crime rate in NYC was six times that of London. Today London's violent crime rate is six times that of NYC.

Obviously part of this is due to massive increases in crime in UK.

I realize the police are only rarely able to protect an individual against a particular criminal act.

However, they protect the public overall against crime by catching and locking up criminals, especially career criminals, the ones who victimize dozens or hundreds of people a year when on the street.

NYPD under Rudy went from one of the worst in the country to about the best at accomplishing this. The people of NYC are proportionately safer. This was accomplished in defiance of almost unanimous opposition by the liberal elite of the city.

You may consider Rudy's accomplishment in this regard inadequate reason to elect him President, but please don't try to downplay the significance of this huge change, created essentially by the determination of a single man.

Fiscally? Yeah, Giuliani cleaned NYC up. But it's taxes are still higher than anywhere else in the country, and even though he cut spending, in the later part of his time as mayor pre-9/11, his spending increased dramatically as the NYC economy boomed. I agree, I like Rudy fiscally, but I just can't tell if he'll stick with the measures he utilized in NYC. He made NYC tilt a little less to the left, but it's still a Leftist bastion. His increased spending in the later part of his term isn't encouraging either.

A "law and order" conservative? Wouldn't that imply that he supports the 2nd Amendment to the letter?

I think considering how far-Left NYC is, it needs someone like Giuliani. I don't think he'll work well for America though.

As for NYC's crime rate, it doesn't help that they've had gun control laws there; they're just 4 years shy of the 100th anniversary of the Sullivan Act.

And once again, you don't even bother refuting it. On-the-record facts, and you just ignore them.

How telling.

"If it has provision for the life of the mother, then I would support it," he told the Fox News program.

But he didn't support it. He campaigned publicly against it when we actual Republicans were passing it. He gave damaging quotes to the libmedia. Now, he wants to play nice.

I don't buy it.

"A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue they will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader. ... If virtue and knowledge are diffused among the people, they will never be enslaved. This will be their great security." - Samuel Adams, Letter to James Warren, 12 February 1779

I must say, some of the anti-Rudy graphics (playing cards, Titanic) are creative and entertaining.

The pro-Rudy side is a bit behind (Victoria Delsoul's efforts notwithstanding). So, c'mon Rudyites!! (I'm working on a couple of ideas myself right now....stay tuned....)

"Like the "gut feeling" we had that GWB's compassionate conservatism was more conservative than compassionate? No, it's not a gut feeling. It's a delusion."

GWB HAS disappointed me on a number of accounts (Iraq invasion lack of post-planning, failure to really fight the 'Rats 24/7 instead of just before election time - worked in 2002-2004-failed miserably in 2006)

But, GWB, for all his Texs talk, comes from a genteel upper-crust family.

Rudy, OTOH grew up on the streets of Brooklyn and is a self-made man. If you don't think that there is a world of difference in how they will approach the opposition (ie. Rudy will use brass knuckles where Dubya would have used a slap), then I don't think you're a good judge of character....

Rudy is on record that he will appoint judges like Scalia and Alito

Doesn't matter what he says, look at what he did as mayor. A Politico review of the 75 judges Giuliani appointed to three of New York state's lower courts, Democrats outnumbered Republicans by more than 8 to 1. One of his appointments was an officer of the International Association of Lesbian and Gay Judges. Another ruled that the state law banning liquor sales on Sundays was unconstitutional because it was insufficiently secular. A third, an abortion-rights supporter, later made it to the federal bench in part because New York Sen. Charles E. Schumer, a liberal Democrat, said he liked her ideology.

Even Ted Olsen could not deny his horrible record of appointing left-wing judges. Instead, in a Hugh Hewitt interview, he could merely claim that these are non-indicators of how a President Giuliani would select judges as President. So, don't pay attention to what he has done in the past, conservatives! Believe what he tells you even though it's necessary for you to buy it in order for him to get elected.
