Broken light bulb sparks debate

BANGOR - Compact fluorescent lights, those swirly bulbs displacing the old incandescent type in many homes, have become the darlings of the energy-conscious crowd, thanks to their capacity to both fight global warming and lower utility bills.

But with more than a million bulbs sold in Maine, questions are being raised about whether consumers know enough about the special disposal and handling requirements that come with these well-documented energy-savers.

In one unusual case, a Prospect woman was told recently that it could cost $2,000 to clean up the mess left by a single shattered bulb.

When I was in college (in the 70s), we had 2 mercury "incidents". One of the grad students threw a roll of tape and hit the mercury barometer. That was about 5 pounds of mercury that went everywhere. It was just swept up and tossed it in the garbage. I guess that would make the building a superfund site now. To the best of my knowlege, we are still all alive.

The second occurred when we were tasked to set up a weather station at a junior college in suburban Chicago. The prof suggested we take some murcury along in case their mercury barometer was not "loaded". Not knowing how much we would need, we took about 25 lbs along. It was in 5 bottles sitting on the floorboard of the car...driving into Chicago. I guess by today's standards, that would make us terrorists...and the car a WMD.

How times change...

What a crock! I remember as a kid we used to play with mercury on our desk tops at school. 'Course, that might explain the two heads some of my friends have! :)

I remember a science teacher telling us to be careful with a little bit of mercury that he poured into our hands! We needed to be careful with it, because it was so expensive! He did tell us that we needed to wash our hands before lunch, though.

What is it going to cost to clean up all the arsenic and cyanide and selenium after you spill a glass of tap water?

Who cares about arsenic, cyanide, or selenuim? What we REALLY need to worry about when you spill water is all the dihydrogen monoxide! That stuff will kill you!

Maine is preternaturally stupid. Have you ever been there? The place is so loaded with Chicken Littles that it has become the new home for psychiatrists tired of their New York City schtick. The only reason that the Republicans can count on two senators is that the male population is so hen-pecked it wouldn't dare vote for a male.

Mercury. Used to make dimes and other change shine. Never used any gloves and most of the other kids did it. So what is the reason that now one needs a multi-thousand dollar uniform to handle a little bit of Mercury?

Why or Why do they lie and lie? Because someone is making a lot of money off of the suits and contracts with the EPA and local agencies.

Sounds like Maine is just plain stupid! The amount of mercury involved is negligible, when you consider the total volume of waste genreated by a household.

Maine's geology is spiked with beryllium, uranium and thorium.

They should all run away just for the radon threats.

**** To me the biggest danger of those tubes is getting crap shocked out of you while you hold both ends trying to guide the little pins in the slot. ****

No, you're talking about Halogen Bulbs, they have the two pins.

The only danger with them is ... BURNING YOUR HOUSE DOWN. The surface temp of a 20 Watt Halogen Desk Lamp Bulb reaches about 69 Bazillon Degrees Fahrenheit (actually 350oF, or oven temp when cooking a Turkey).

But on the upside they last for 2000 hours - if they don't start a fire first.

;-)

Dine on pickled eggs are release hydrogen sulfide; it locks up mercury into the insoluble sulfide.
