BANGOR - Compact fluorescent lights, those swirly bulbs displacing the old incandescent type in many homes, have become the darlings of the energy-conscious crowd, thanks to their capacity to both fight global warming and lower utility bills.
But with more than a million bulbs sold in Maine, questions are being raised about whether consumers know enough about the special disposal and handling requirements that come with these well-documented energy-savers.
In one unusual case, a Prospect woman was told recently that it could cost $2,000 to clean up the mess left by a single shattered bulb.

When I was in college (in the 70s), we had 2 mercury "incidents". One of the grad students threw a roll of tape and hit the mercury barometer. That was about 5 pounds of mercury that went everywhere. It was just swept up and tossed it in the garbage. I guess that would make the building a superfund site now. To the best of my knowlege, we are still all alive.
The second occurred when we were tasked to set up a weather station at a junior college in suburban Chicago. The prof suggested we take some murcury along in case their mercury barometer was not "loaded". Not knowing how much we would need, we took about 25 lbs along. It was in 5 bottles sitting on the floorboard of the car...driving into Chicago. I guess by today's standards, that would make us terrorists...and the car a WMD.

I remember a science teacher telling us to be careful with a little bit of mercury that he poured into our hands! We needed to be careful with it, because it was so expensive! He did tell us that we needed to wash our hands before lunch, though.

No, you're talking about Halogen Bulbs, they have the two pins.
The only danger with them is ... BURNING YOUR HOUSE DOWN. The surface temp of a 20 Watt Halogen Desk Lamp Bulb reaches about 69 Bazillon Degrees Fahrenheit (actually 350oF, or oven temp when cooking a Turkey).
But on the upside they last for 2000 hours - if they don't start a fire first.
