As war protesters marched toward Arlington Memorial Bridge en route to the Pentagon yesterday, they were flanked by long lines of military veterans and others who stood in solidarity with U.S. troops and the Bush administration's cause in Iraq. Many booed loudly as the protesters passed, turned their backs to them or yelled, "If you don't like America, get out!"
Several thousand vets, some of whom came by bus from New Jersey, car caravans from California or flights from Seattle or Michigan, lined the route from the bridge and down 23rd Street, waving signs such as "War There Or War Here." Their lines snaked around the corner and down several blocks of Constitution Avenue in what organizers called the largest gathering of pro-administration counter-demonstrators since the war began four years ago.
Bullhorns blared and drums beat as antiwar protesters marched from the Lincoln Memorial to the Pentagon. According to early reports, it was generally a peaceful demonstration. Police did move in occasionally to make sure that the yelling marchers and counter protesters did not escalate.
The vets turned both sides of Constitution into a bitter, charged gantlet for the war protesters. "Jihadists!" some vets screamed. "You're brain-dead!" Others chanted, "Workers World traitors must hang!" -- a reference to the Communist newspaper. Some broke into "The Star-Spangled Banner" as war protesters sought to hand out pamphlets.
"Bunch of hooligans in motorcycle jackets!" one war protester shot back.
The large turnout surprised even some counter-demonstrators. Polls show public opinion turning against the war in Iraq, and the November election was widely seen as a repudiation of the administration's policy.

These "war protestors" are nothing but haters of America and our Military Nyaa. There were such people planning, organizing, and paying for all the busses and signs, but the average protestor was a lemming from a college campus who was there to be kewl. When they saw that there were actually people out there (like us) who not only disagreed with them, but thought they were traitors at worst and useful idiots at best, they were genuinely surprised. |
"Others chanted, 'Workers World traitors must hang!' -- a reference to the Communist newspaper."
The Washington Post gets another fact wrong -- probably by intention. The reference to "Workers World traitors" is a reference to Brian Becker and the other members of the Workers World Party who comprise A.N.S.W.E.R. -- and are communists.
An article entitled, "Reds Still. The story no one wants to hear about the antiwar movement," by Byron York, from the February 10, 2003, issue of National Review states in part:
"The protest was put together by a group called International ANSWER, which stands for Act Now to Stop War and End Racism. ANSWER is an outgrowth of another group called the International Action Center, a San Francisco-based organization that showcases the work of Ramsey Clark, the Johnson administration attorney general who has specialized in anti-American causes. Both ANSWER and the International Action Center are closely allied with a small but energetic Marxist-Leninist organization known as the Workers World Party, which in its turbulent history has supported the Soviet interventions in Hungary and Czechoslovakia, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and the Chinese government's crackdown in Tiananmen Square. Today, the WWP devotes much of its energy to supporting the regimes in Iraq and North Korea."
The above was written before the War in Iraq began. It gives a clear picture of who/what is behind A.N.S.W.E.R.
Thanks to all who were able to attend or support the Gathering of Eagles. It was an unforgettable experience.
FReep On!
Wow! Great photos. That one of Bill Carter of NC is fantastic. Talk about capturing the essence of the event.
I'll be damned.
I'm certain that today there are pigs flying.
NPR? Never in my wildest dreams. (That's it! It's a dream! Either that or we've entered an alternative universe.)
I drove over the bridge after they opened it at 3 PM. It was littered with signs and papers. They are pure pigs.
A helicopter flew over the protesters for hours. Wonder who paid for that?
Sorry I missed you yesterday Angelwood.
NPR:
Who woulda thunk it!
I thinks that as the circulation/ viewer numbers keep dropping, the economics of being biased will start to force some balance in the MSM. I hope anyway.
Good job Eagles, sorry I couldn't be there.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Veterans and TRUE Americans!
Yesterday was one Giant step towards showing what we're really all about.
Hooray for our side!
Many thanks to all the FReepers who braved the awful weather to go to the Gathering of Eagles.
Jeez, no wonder they were so pissed when they arrived on the other side of the Bridge to face another 60 hardy FReepers and Vets.
FR had another lesser know and harder to get to permitted area on the circle in front of Arlington Cemetery. But we were there and the Park Police had only ONE officer standing between us and them. That didn't work out too well. Soon we were toe to toe with the moonbats, verbally engaging them. The moonbats soon started to march around both sides of the circle and in effect had us surrounded. Good thing for them they did not get on the grass and threaten our immediate flank. We had a good number of Marines with us, along with Army and Air Force personnel.
But soon motorcycle police showed up and pushed the moonbats back by gently riding directly into them.
We have pics and some are posted here by SouthernBoyupNorth. The pics start with BufordP in his Air Force Veteran's cap. That's the infamous concretebob in the next pic.
And in case you thought the wind was blowing hard on the Mall, it was blowing twice as hard over the Memorial Bridge. Try carrying flags and signs in that wind. I had to hold my cap so as not to have it blown over the bridge. We were hoping some moonbats would be blown over but they are so full of sh$$, none were.

And hugs to you, Military Mom. We stand with you and with the soldiers. We celebrate this Gathering of Eagles, we who watched and cheered from our homes. You can bet the guys in Iraq noticed, tho, and the Congressmen too. And al-Quaeda too.
Molon labe.
BUT, we won this time!!
I'm wondering how they got this pic. Must have actually been in Arlington Cemetery with a telephoto lens. Pic is distorted. They are still a hundred yards or so from us.
Michigander -
Thanks for the pics. That's our group at the U.S./Marine flags and one of FR's MOABs (Mother Of All Banners for those who don't read the Walter Reed AARs).

"Operation Spoil Media Bias" worked at this end of the bridge. Good Thinking!!
[Mr] T
Thanks.
Praise God and great blessings to all who participated and to all who prayed for them and cheered them on.
May all the traitors fall in their own pits.
WOW! Pigs just flew by my dining room window.
NOT SO FAST WITH YOUR APPLAUSE FOR THE WP. Inside the article, I found this false premise:
"Polls show public opinion turning against the war in Iraq, and the November election was widely seen as a repudiation of the administration's policy."
I sent an email to the author of the article and gave her a little informed opinion about what the 2006 election was really all about. We canot allow the media to get away with this erroneous statement.
The election was not "against the war" .. it was against the people who ARE NOT WILLING TO FIGHT TO WIN THE WAR.
If you see your local newspapers using the above statement, please send a letter or email to the newspaper and give them the straight scoop. Eventually, they will quit using it if we complain enough.

Video I took of a WWII Sailor from WWI who was in the Tarawa Invasion
A heads up, Neil Cavuto promised to cover the story to a Gold Star Mom.
God Bless all of our brave, valiant eagles!
AMEN.
Another neat thread!
