Zach Wamp: Why Fred Thompson Should Run For President
The Chattanoogan ^ | 3-16-07

Posted on 03/16/2007 1:42:16 PM PDT by STARWISE

Last week I spent about an hour asking my Republican colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives what they thought about the possibility of former Sen. Fred Thompson running for President.

What happened then was the political equivalent of March Madness with over 40 Members of Congress immediately signing up to either meet with Fred or outright volunteering to help.

When I spoke with Senator Thompson this week, I told him it was like someone set off fireworks on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.

There are many reasons Fred should run for President and they have nothing to do with anyone else currently running from either party. So here we go:

1. He personifies strength and trust - the two primary characteristics people look for in a President.

2. He is a natural leader - let's face it. Some politicians are but most are not.

3. He is a consistent conservative - from national security and second amendment rights to the sanctity of life and traditional marriage, Fred is a strong conservative.

4. He has charisma - in the Senate they call it "gravitas." At home it's just plain old confidence. Fred knows who he is, where he came from and where we, as a nation, should go together.

5. He has plenty of experience - not a career politician, but from cleaning up government corruption to chairing select committees on Chinese missile technology, Fred Thompson has the right amount of experience.

6. He is highly electable - Fred Thompson has always been likeable. From the movie set to the Senate floor, he is just "good ol' Fred" to everyone he comes in contact with.

7. He has "star quality" - let's face it, we are at the height of the information age. The media overdoes it so someone who is media friendly and has some celebrity is advantaged.

8. He has a great sense of humor - during the difficult times in which we live, we need a touch of humor. Fred is serious minded but does not take himself too seriously.

9. He is comfortable in his own skin - What you see is what you get. Fred Thompson is the real deal and it shows.

10. He is a Tennessean - perhaps the biggest plus of all and sorry y'all...you have to be one to really understand.

If you feel as I do, let Fred know it. I think he is the closest thing to Ronald Reagan we have seen in a long time.

Zach Wamp Member of Congress

"Last Best Chance" was the film in which FT played POTUS. It too has a website: http://www.lastbestchance.org
You can watch the trailer there.

I'm all for any new candidate who can knock Rudy off his perch.

Me too! Thompson's deep calm smooth Southern voice against the lisping trollish ex-mayor? I'll take Thompson. Even if the mayor is dressed as a woman.

Only negative is can detect are:
1. only lege experience, what about executive background?
2. what about his age?

I don't know. He's a lawyer, he was minority counsel for Watergate. I don't see what some of these other candidates have that's any better. Running NYC isn't running a state. McStain and others haven't done anything except the Senate. Romney has the best overall resume but I'm not sure that's helping him, at least, not yet.

If McStain isn't too old at 72, Thompson being almost ten years younger and in better health than either McStain or Guiliani with their cancer history isn't an issue for me.

I could be pretty comfortable with a Thompson/Romney or Romney/Thompson ticket. No real preference on the top of the ticket. Probably Thompson to head it because he might be one of the few who would want a single term and then hand it off to Mitt. Part of Thompson's appeal is that he is someone who isn't all that eager to be president. We often say that no one who wants it should should be trusted with it. Well, Thompson isn't a typical ambitious politician and never has been.

Thompson/Romney could be a 12-year ticket for us.

Screw our better at the RNC, we will go around them to support Mr. Thompson. I have nothing but disdain for that collection of jerks that gave us the election of 2006.

The U.S. politicians in general should never, ever "fallen asleep at the wheel" when it comes to the very complex and the very troublesome issue of illegal immigration, and soon, the U.S. may very well pay for their political ignorance by truly disappearing as a country!

What do you think about your ex-Senator running for President? To me, he's not all that. However, Thompson is sure better than the dreadful trinity of Rudy McRomney. I'll even do GOTV for him during the primaries.

Ron Paul?

Sure he is a nice guy, I like him on most of the issues, but he is anti-Iraq war, and thats why I don't have any fire for him.

Currently, he would be the best of the bunch. Not without flaws, of course, but he looks like Reagan compared to the rest of the field. The biggest concern I have for him is if he has the fire in the belly to run. He's not the strongest campaigner in my estimation.

Gingrich / Thompson maybe; Thompson / Gingrich is a mistake..
Thompson is no Gingrich..

We need a General as President not a Captain....
Thompson is good backup..

C'mon .. if you can't see the profound difference in the characters, personalities, sanity, reputation, respect, consistency and gravitas between the two ... you truly are judgementally challenged. IMO, your posts are now quite predictable and boringly repetitive and redundant. I'm sure, however, that you may be obsessed, so .. carry on.

No Tennessean has carried his home state's electoral votes since Andrew Jackson. Can the Republicans afford to cede Tennessee to the 'Rats?

Thompson would carry Tennessee with close to 70 percent of the vote.
