Last week I spent about an hour asking my Republican colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives what they thought about the possibility of former Sen. Fred Thompson running for President.
What happened then was the political equivalent of March Madness with over 40 Members of Congress immediately signing up to either meet with Fred or outright volunteering to help.
When I spoke with Senator Thompson this week, I told him it was like someone set off fireworks on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.
There are many reasons Fred should run for President and they have nothing to do with anyone else currently running from either party. So here we go:
1. He personifies strength and trust - the two primary characteristics people look for in a President.
2. He is a natural leader - let's face it. Some politicians are but most are not.
3. He is a consistent conservative - from national security and second amendment rights to the sanctity of life and traditional marriage, Fred is a strong conservative.
4. He has charisma - in the Senate they call it "gravitas." At home it's just plain old confidence. Fred knows who he is, where he came from and where we, as a nation, should go together.
5. He has plenty of experience - not a career politician, but from cleaning up government corruption to chairing select committees on Chinese missile technology, Fred Thompson has the right amount of experience.
6. He is highly electable - Fred Thompson has always been likeable. From the movie set to the Senate floor, he is just "good ol' Fred" to everyone he comes in contact with.
7. He has "star quality" - let's face it, we are at the height of the information age. The media overdoes it so someone who is media friendly and has some celebrity is advantaged.
8. He has a great sense of humor - during the difficult times in which we live, we need a touch of humor. Fred is serious minded but does not take himself too seriously.
9. He is comfortable in his own skin - What you see is what you get. Fred Thompson is the real deal and it shows.
10. He is a Tennessean - perhaps the biggest plus of all and sorry y'all...you have to be one to really understand.
If you feel as I do, let Fred know it. I think he is the closest thing to Ronald Reagan we have seen in a long time.

The hype over former Sen. Fred Thompson has some substance to it, as the actor-politician has already begun approaching experienced campaign hands in key states.
Thompson already evokes the obvious comparison to Ronald Reagan because of his profession.
Thompson effectively embraced the Republican right when he ran for and entered the U.S. Senate.
From the perspective of the Republican Party's conservative base, he stacks up well against each of the "Big Three" leading Republican candidates.
His voting record (lifetime American Conservative Union rating: 86%) in the Senate is more conservative than that of Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain (lifetime ACU rating: 82%), none of his position-switches are nearly as bad or as recent as those of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R), and nothing in his background is as negative as that of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R).
Given enough money, Thompson could make a good run at it by tearing down the conservative credentials of the "Big Three" and then building himself up as a tax-cutting, pro-life former senator.
His acting role on "Law & Order" does not hurt, either.

Fred Thompson has the same birthday as Bill Clinton (but is 4 years older). That's the only thing negative I know about him so far...but the Clintonistas are sure to find something to attack him over.
I would think that one of his "looks" would wither Hillary and send Obama back home crying to his mama.

How many candidates does this cover? I'm not sure that Algore counts as a Tennessean. I thought he was brought up in some fancy-pants hotel in Washington while daddy was in the Senate or cozying up to the Commies running the Russian oil companies.
In any case, I think it's about time we rectified this situation!

The illegal immigration issue must be front and center during all of the GOP Presidential Primary Debates as well as during all of the General Presidential Debates! This will separate all of the "pro-enforcement of all of the U.S. immigration laws" Republican Presidential candidates from all of the "pro-amnesty for illegal immigrants" Republican Presidential candidates! The illegal immigration issue as well as each and every problem that's related to illegal immigration is far too important for too many politicians to keep ignoring to this point. Good-bye U.S.A. if more amnesty for illegals happens soon.
I like Fred ok so far, but this list is stupid. Reasons number 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are all the same reason slightly reworded. Reason number 10 is crap. Make it three reasons to vote for the guy and cut the nonsense.
John Bell of Tennessee did carry his home state in 1860--he was the Constitutional Union candidate and came in fourth in the popular vote, but third in the electoral college. I forgot about him--he was a Tennessean who carried his home state...but unlike Jackson, Polk, A. Johnson, and Gore, he was a native of the state. Fred Thompson was born in Alabama. A Tennessean can't be elected President unless he was born elsewhere.

Actually, he wasn't... which is why we rejected him. Vacationing here during summer breaks doesn't count as "being a Tennessean". If you listen to his accent you can tell he is from the north east. Listen to Fred's accent and you can hear a true southerner.

Thompson also touched on immigration, stating the need for America to gain genuine control of her borders, suggesting that once that was accomplished, Americans would continue to embrace immigration as they always have, provided it's legal immigration and on a scale that fuels the economy, while not creating a potential disaster for social services...."
