Last week I spent about an hour asking my Republican colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives what they thought about the possibility of former Sen. Fred Thompson running for President.
What happened then was the political equivalent of March Madness with over 40 Members of Congress immediately signing up to either meet with Fred or outright volunteering to help.
When I spoke with Senator Thompson this week, I told him it was like someone set off fireworks on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.
There are many reasons Fred should run for President and they have nothing to do with anyone else currently running from either party. So here we go:
1. He personifies strength and trust - the two primary characteristics people look for in a President.
2. He is a natural leader - let's face it. Some politicians are but most are not.
3. He is a consistent conservative - from national security and second amendment rights to the sanctity of life and traditional marriage, Fred is a strong conservative.
4. He has charisma - in the Senate they call it "gravitas." At home it's just plain old confidence. Fred knows who he is, where he came from and where we, as a nation, should go together.
5. He has plenty of experience - not a career politician, but from cleaning up government corruption to chairing select committees on Chinese missile technology, Fred Thompson has the right amount of experience.
6. He is highly electable - Fred Thompson has always been likeable. From the movie set to the Senate floor, he is just "good ol' Fred" to everyone he comes in contact with.
7. He has "star quality" - let's face it, we are at the height of the information age. The media overdoes it so someone who is media friendly and has some celebrity is advantaged.
8. He has a great sense of humor - during the difficult times in which we live, we need a touch of humor. Fred is serious minded but does not take himself too seriously.
9. He is comfortable in his own skin - What you see is what you get. Fred Thompson is the real deal and it shows.
10. He is a Tennessean - perhaps the biggest plus of all and sorry y'all...you have to be one to really understand.
If you feel as I do, let Fred know it. I think he is the closest thing to Ronald Reagan we have seen in a long time.
Zach Wamp Member of Congress
"The illegal immigration issue must be front and center during all of the GOP Presidential Primary Debates as well as during all of the General Presidential Debates! This will separate all of the "pro-enforcement of all of the U.S. immigration laws" Republican Presidential candidates from all of the "pro-amnesty for illegal immigrants" Republican Presidential candidates! Good-bye U.S.A. if more amnesty for illegals happens soon."
I'm big on this issue, and while I don't think Thompson record amounts to my own, I do think he'll run on an enforcement policy.
He would do really well if he picked Duncan or someone like him. The desire to have someone that you know will back that position, is desireable by many conservatives. I just think ultimately we don't want a 'comprehesive' package to come-out. The system must be fixed...we must have clear enforcement.
I think the primary interest is in the workplace. Just mandating the use of verification. Simply putting that in place leave all business whom do such, open to legal dispute. I for one think that in some cases we'll need immigration...but it has to make sense, and it can't be just supply the dems with more votes or business with cheap labor.
It has to be a geniune need to our economy.
Divorced. I think his current wife is like twenty years younger.
We already know all we need to know about those two. At least I do.
Whoever wins the nomination, the rats will run him through the meat grinder. I want somebody who will mangle the meat grinder.
Thank you
Yes, Al was supposedly a Tennessean who was acceptable as a Congressman and then as a Senator - before he dropped his pretenses and showed voters here what he really is. Don't forget that we kept him out of the White House in 2000 by not letting him have our electoral votes. If he'd had those, all the nonsense in Florida would not have been necessary.
As for Fred, he's head and shoulders above the other Republican candidates - and those other candidates probably know it. I wonder if there's already a "Law & Order" episode in the can where D.A. Arthur Branch leaves to run for a higher office? I sure hope so.
I'd love to see a Thompson/Hunter ticket.
That's tanned...rested...and ready
He is someone I could campaign for and get votes for him in New York!
Algore was a tennesean? thats rich I tell ya, rich.He may have been born there but he sure as hell wasnt from there.
Thompson/Hunter ticket.Would be sooooooooooo cool.
If they don't, here's a shot of Fred being head and shoulders above Chief Roberts!
(Incidentally, there is a movie in which he played POTUS but I don't recall the title.)
"Last Best Chance," or something like that? The movie in which he played POTUS?
In any case --- Fred sure is hugh.
He referred to the undocumented as "illegal aliens". Nothing more need be said. He throws political correctness out the window.
Rudy guy here. Thompson is quickly becoming my second choice. As a matter of fact, other than Rudy, Thompson is the only guy in the field who can beat the Democrats and the Islamists.
In my opinion, if Fred Thompson gets in, no one but God Himself will be able to stop him from becoming the next President of the United States.
I agree with Zach Wamps's assessment of Senator Thompson's personal gifts and political skills. They're God-given and substantial.
About the only point of disagreement I have is his assessment of Fred's overall conservatism.
Wow. If we get Thompson, Romney *and* Newt running, we might actually have debates where Republicans say meaningful articulate things!
I'm all for any new candidate who can knock Rudy off his perch.
Only negative is can detect are:
1. only lege experience, what about executive background?
2. what about his age?
Hi Gonzo!!! Wouldn't that be fun!! Hunter Thompson!! The stoners would vote and say, "Dude, I thought he died"
