US Seeks Better Relationship With Mexico
Financial Times ^ | August 13, 1986

he US and Mexico are hoping to put recent strains in their relations behind them, and concentrate on common objectives, in talks between President Ronald Reagan and Mr Miguel de la Madrid, the Mexican President, at the White House today.

US officials say that the meeting, the fifth between the two presidents, will focus on Mexico's economic problems and the war against drugs, demoting Mr Reagan's contentious policy towards Central America to at most a side issue.

In preparation for the visit, the Reagan Administration has been making a concerted effort to be nicer to Mexico after a period of several months in which members of Congress and some government officials were sharply critical of corruption in Mexican official circles and an allegedly slapdash attitude towards drug trafficking. There has been much debate in Washington over whether Mexico is on the verge of economic and political collapse.

Mexico seeks better relationship with the United States, this is code for bend way over Uncle Sam to take the big burrito. Relations with Mexico have always been one way other than Mexican food.

Former San Diegan.

That's been the relationship for quite a while. Maybe we can improve it by getting a beer for them afterward and thanking them for their attention.

I was just hoping to tease anti immigration posters by showing how Reagan had the same views as Bush on Mexico.

It is a mere prank.

Those who don't learn from history are bound to repeat it.

There is a reason Corona beer is yellow.

Mexico is forever p*ssing all over us, and this current Administration has been their enabler and has even held their tool for them for better aim.

Unfortunately, Mr. Reagan isn't able to see the effects of his wrongful thinking.

Yeah, I am really impressed with how many anti immigration freepers hate Reagan because of the 86 amnesty.

Let's get a head count here.

The money we spend supporting some 800,000 Mexicans in American prisions is probably close to the whole Mexican GNP. We definitely need to improve that relation.
