Edwards: World poverty must end, rich must pay
Union Leader ^ | 3/15/2007 | JOHN DISTASO

Posted on 03/15/2007 3:25:08 PM PDT by nctexan

Goffstown – Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards proposed today that the United States spend $5 billion annually to lead a worldwide effort to end global poverty through education and health care initiatives.

The former North Carolina senator said his effort would not only be a “good and moral thing,” but it would also make the United States safer.

“We know that terrorists thrive in failed states and in states torn apart by internal conflict and poverty,” he said in a speech at Saint Anselm College. In Africa and Muslim countries, he said, millions of children are being educated “in madrassas run by militant extremists.

“When you understand that,” he said, “it suddenly becomes clear: global poverty is not just a moral issue for the United States,” but also a “national security issue.” [snip]

While yet to produce a specific budget for his plan, Edwards estimated the U.S. would contribute $3 billion of an estimated $10 billion worldwide cost to bring “basic education” to 23 million children in impoverished nations by 2015.

He would commit $600 million for overseas health-related initiatives, including programs for clean water.

Bringing economic opportunities to the poor worldwide, he said, would cost about $1.4 million.

Wealthy Americans would foot the bill, Edwards said.

The amazing thing is that there are people who actually believe that something like this could work.

How 'bout John-Boy sets up a tent city for the homeless on the back 40, at least until they are ready to put in the soccer field?

BREAKING: A press release issued today from the offices of J. Edwards, located in the penthouse high atop the tallest building in whatever state he's from, stated that Purdy-boy would immediately set the standard for poverty relief around the world by opening the doors of his country estate so that the poor of America could take a tour and see what they too could have if they would only do the right thing and elect him POTUS.

Doors will close promptly at 5 PM to allow time for the staff to clean up after the riff raff....er, common people.....and to prepare for a private dinner party for Democrat party leaders who will discuss in private the needs of the poor. The group has donned a working title of, "Let them eat cake" for this project. More later as details unfold.

Yeah, that amazes me too. Of course, you would think they'd have noticed the totalitarianism=poverty link before, too.

i hoed beets and beans with illegal mexicans as a kid.

they get in-state tuition, and i don't.

You'll appreciate this story: one of our children had a college freshman roomate who was Philippino. A real goody-toe-shoes valedictorian, head cheerleader, etc. Daddy was a lawyer and mommy was a stay-at-home mom. Our kid: we paid the full load for tuition etc. The other kid? Full free ride, tuition etc. First day of school this kid shows up with a truck load of stuff that filled the dorm room. You would have thought it was a three bedroom apartment! Few months later the goody-toe-shoes-full-free-ride kid stole our kid's credit card and went shopping! Then, to top it off, we discover the other kid is working for an escort service! What an eye-opener THAT was for our kid! I'll never, ever contribute to a scholarship fund! Simply a 'give a free ride to the foreigners' scam IMO.

Isn't the redistribution of wealth the foundation of all Socialism. It was when I took political science.......................

True, but the John Edwards's and Hillary Clintons of the world want it to come about with your money, not theirs, and then take credit for their "compassion for humanity".

Sell your new mega million $$$ house Johnniegirl and give that $$$ to your Marxist whinings. Sorry, but I am not responsible for someone who lives in Timbucktu, Africa. What has become of them, is their own governments and peoples faults. Not mine. I am not paying for their upkeep.

Consider that in less than 2 years the United States will have a president who believes this sh*t. He or she will have the democrat House and Senate to enact legislation to foment the changes which will direct America to be relegated to a provider for the third world. I do not see a conservative on the horizon who will galvanize the various factions on the right. So here we are, world socialism (I was taught that was communism), global warming as a pretext to tax the last hope for this world into oblivion, and affirmation that fudgepacking, pillowmunchers are the new norm.

And Bush is appologizing for something he out not be appologizing for through Gonzales. The MSM have pulled out all stops to denegrate time honored values to reshape the future under a set of values which they affirm, but have not the slightest idea of how to justifiy their brave new world. We will be entering into a long dark tunnel of previously tried and failed systems of governence, but it is the way of destruction. I have never seen a country fall so far so fast.

Bushes' answer to the media and the dems should be the same one Cheney asserted to Patrick Layhe. There is no conservative leadership being offered up. Just political excuses for the inexcusable in order to confuse the electorate long enough to be elected they think. They do not understand even their base. So with that vacuum, the dems know damn well what they think and want and they will win and they will effect changes that ought to be relegated to a freak or horror show. Get ready. It is coming to a town near you in the next 20 or so months.
