Goffstown – Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards proposed today that the United States spend $5 billion annually to lead a worldwide effort to end global poverty through education and health care initiatives.
The former North Carolina senator said his effort would not only be a “good and moral thing,” but it would also make the United States safer.
“We know that terrorists thrive in failed states and in states torn apart by internal conflict and poverty,” he said in a speech at Saint Anselm College. In Africa and Muslim countries, he said, millions of children are being educated “in madrassas run by militant extremists.
“When you understand that,” he said, “it suddenly becomes clear: global poverty is not just a moral issue for the United States,” but also a “national security issue.” [snip]
While yet to produce a specific budget for his plan, Edwards estimated the U.S. would contribute $3 billion of an estimated $10 billion worldwide cost to bring “basic education” to 23 million children in impoverished nations by 2015.
He would commit $600 million for overseas health-related initiatives, including programs for clean water.
Bringing economic opportunities to the poor worldwide, he said, would cost about $1.4 million.
Wealthy Americans would foot the bill, Edwards said.
Well if those Feed the Children commercials are right it costs something like $96 a year to feed a third world child.

That's about 50 cents a person, worldwide, a year, after some management fees. That should be enough for education and presenting economic opportunity. Duty done as good Liberal Americans.

The Breck Girl's house has more square footage than over 30 of the mobile homes that I just ran past. And just think of how many people could build a comfortable house on that acerage surrounding that estate.
