Edwards: World poverty must end, rich must pay
Union Leader ^ | 3/15/2007 | JOHN DISTASO

Posted on 03/15/2007 3:25:08 PM PDT by nctexan

Goffstown – Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards proposed today that the United States spend $5 billion annually to lead a worldwide effort to end global poverty through education and health care initiatives.

The former North Carolina senator said his effort would not only be a “good and moral thing,” but it would also make the United States safer.

“We know that terrorists thrive in failed states and in states torn apart by internal conflict and poverty,” he said in a speech at Saint Anselm College. In Africa and Muslim countries, he said, millions of children are being educated “in madrassas run by militant extremists.

“When you understand that,” he said, “it suddenly becomes clear: global poverty is not just a moral issue for the United States,” but also a “national security issue.” [snip]

While yet to produce a specific budget for his plan, Edwards estimated the U.S. would contribute $3 billion of an estimated $10 billion worldwide cost to bring “basic education” to 23 million children in impoverished nations by 2015.

He would commit $600 million for overseas health-related initiatives, including programs for clean water.

Bringing economic opportunities to the poor worldwide, he said, would cost about $1.4 million.

Wealthy Americans would foot the bill, Edwards said.

If it weren't for ambulance chasers like Edwards the gap wouldn't be nearly as wide.

When the Breck Girl, Albore, Jon Cary and Teresa, Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi et al give up their opulent lifestyles and live in simple little homes like the "little people" then maybe they'll have some business hectoring everyone about their righteousness. They'll still be wrong about idiotic proposals for "wealth redistribution" such as this one, but at least they might not have to be such nauseating hypocrites living the high life while telling everyone else they must "tighten the belt"........

If you want to see how serious he is about making the rich pay suggest this. Everyone with wealth of more than $500K must pay their fair share. I mean total wealth; wages, saving, stocks, property, businesses, and any other asset. The left will high tail it to the hills. They do not want to punish the wealthy. They want to punish the workers getting wealthy. The don't want new members to their club.

Ok Edwards. I'm coming over to play basketball on your private court.

Tell your wife to start cooking, and I like my steak medium.

What a hypocritical faggot.

So, let me see if I understand Mr. Edwards. We're going to give the ME and other poor Muslim countries money for better madrassas and the health care they need to enable them to be healthy enough to attend them? We've been giving money to the ME and poor Muslim countries, we've been collecting money from our school kids to send money to Ethiopia to buy food. We've been trying to re-build the schools in Iraq and see that women and girls are educated, as well. This would be funded by the wealthy in the U.S.? Unfortunately, I won't qualify, Mr. Edwards, because my taxes are already high enough, but I still send food and money and make sandwiches the best I can for our own who are down on their luck.

Okay, Mr. Edwards, you first. As you say, it's the moral thing to do, and the U.S. has been doing the moral thing ever since there were starving children in China at the turn of the century -- the 19th century, I mean, and everybody just loves us to death. No, Mr. Edwards, I think not.

a worldwide effort to end global poverty through education and health care initiatives.

Cool. Let's abolish government-sponsored socialism, institute property rights and associated legal structure, and let's put the definition of "poverty" on a fixed scale and not simply define it relatively.

but this coiffed, pampered, gucci-ed and armani-ed freakin' liberal is going to give them a little cash and that will motivate them to get off their you know whats and actually make a living.

no. no. no. no.

Worse than that, once the rich don't have enough money to fund businesses, there won't be any jobs for such. The worlds poor do not create employment for each other.

I thought politics was supposed to be "show business for the ugly." Where'd he/she/it come from? (I still think he's prettier than Hillary . . . but then I have dirty shoes prettier than her royal thunderous thighs-ness.)
