Edwards: World poverty must end, rich must pay
Union Leader ^ | 3/15/2007 | JOHN DISTASO

Goffstown – Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards proposed today that the United States spend $5 billion annually to lead a worldwide effort to end global poverty through education and health care initiatives.

The former North Carolina senator said his effort would not only be a “good and moral thing,” but it would also make the United States safer.

“We know that terrorists thrive in failed states and in states torn apart by internal conflict and poverty,” he said in a speech at Saint Anselm College. In Africa and Muslim countries, he said, millions of children are being educated “in madrassas run by militant extremists.

“When you understand that,” he said, “it suddenly becomes clear: global poverty is not just a moral issue for the United States,” but also a “national security issue.” [snip]

While yet to produce a specific budget for his plan, Edwards estimated the U.S. would contribute $3 billion of an estimated $10 billion worldwide cost to bring “basic education” to 23 million children in impoverished nations by 2015.

He would commit $600 million for overseas health-related initiatives, including programs for clean water.

Bringing economic opportunities to the poor worldwide, he said, would cost about $1.4 million.

Wealthy Americans would foot the bill, Edwards said.

Edwards is a wimp and a coward. He refused to appear on Fox debate because he was too scared - he would not be given the questions in advance. If he is scared of Brit Hume, imagine how he will cave when faced with Putin.

Piff. In terms of world hunger (and corruption) $5B is a fart in a whirlwind.

Poverty isn;t the problem
“We know that terrorists thrive in failed states and in states torn apart by internal conflict and poverty,” he said
is wrong. They come from states stable and rich enough to support a middle class Eygpt, Saudi, Pakistan, Indonesia

The profile of the terrorist. Overeducated, motivated, but without the power and influence to rule they desire, but won't work for. The same crowd that stalke WTO conferences.

Edwards Denounces “Selfish” Americans

Former senator and candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination John Edwards castigated Americans as “selfish bastards” and insisted that Jesus would “cast them into the fiery pit of Hell.”

Edwards’ outburst is puzzling given that Americans give more than any other country in the world in both foreign aid and private charitable donations. In 2006, America gave more than $260 billion in private and corporate funds. This was an increase of 6% over the amount given in 2005. Meanwhile, Edwards resides in a 28,000 square-foot, $6 million home on a 108 acre estate in North Carolina.

Edwards contends that his lifestyle is “really quite modest considering the role God has called upon me to play as champion of the poor and downtrodden. The wealth I possess has been liberated from the greedy sinners God has placed within my power. My affluence serves as a shining example of the rewards that await the righteous in His grand plan.”

But...but...we haven't even ended poverty in America and we've been waging war on poverty for decades now. How are we supposed to end it worldwide? Will the results be any different?

Can America afford another decades long war with no prospect of winning?

Redistributing 1.6 percent of the income of the richest 10 percent of the global population... would provide the $300 billion needed to lift the 1 billion people living on less than a dollar a day out of extreme poverty, at least temporarily.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you have fed him for a lifetime. Silky pony is advocating giving a fish...over and over forever.

I really prefer the "Teach a man to fish and he'll sit in a boat all day drinking beer" as the more probable outcome.

Silky pony is doing what all politicians do...promising to do good deeds WITH OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY. How very benevolent.
