FOX is the least of those who harp on doom. The Discover Channel does with great frequency--doom in every possible form [liquid, solid, gaseous, from space, terrestrial, microbial, volcanic, earthquake, landslide--what form have I forgotten?]. So does the Weather Channel. People seem to enjoy being scared.
It's been nice knowing you Dan.
I'm getting closer to an eruption also. Way too many beans last night.
Agreed. Not one of Tommy Lee Jone's finest efforts. But it fit the thread topic.
"Can Fox give us a day without telling us we are doomed?
Give it a rest guys."
This story is from 2002...uh, that was a few days ago, and they usually don't report on Al Gore's rumblings.
It would have made for a far more believable plot for "The Day After Tomorrow."
(think global cooling and loss of food production).>>>
I bet the moonbats would love an eruption.
Worse than that, it could screw-up the trout fishing in the Madison River!
Insects
I am being very serious.
When you drive up through Idaho, craters of the moon, you can see at least three previous lava flows that are at least 10 to 20 feet thick.
They came from Yellowstone in the past, and so a new one will come and flow over them in the future.
Yellowstone lake is getting a bulge in the bottom, which is tipping the lake which causes water to spill over the South edge. There is an area South of what used to be the shoreline, which has a bunch of trees dying from the water being spilled out. (The exit from the lake is in the North, so it is easy to see that the lake is tipping, and that is just in the last 10 years.)
In any case, a largescale supervolcano would probably be more destructive than comment 30 suggests.
"The textbook model for a normal fault is not what's happening at the Teton fault," Smith said.
Clearly, the National Park Service needs to "interpret" the geology of the situation to the rocks.
After all, St. Francis did preach to the birds. So, why should a ParkPerson not lecture to rocks?
I have a garage full of marshmallows and cooking forks. Dang it, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade...
>>Is there anything that can be done (besides packing for the apocalypse)?
For instance, would extracting geothermal energy for electricity make any difference? If so, would it help, or make matters worse? If Yellowstone weren't a national park, (and therefore off-limits for development) would a geothermal electric plant be feasible?<<
Generally there is warning before a modern volcano erupts (earthquakes, lava bulges etc).
But I have not read of any successful defusing of a volcano - the energy is so much more than an atomic bomb.
The thing about Yellowstone is that humans didn't even exist the last time it erupted - its been a long darn time.
Let us know if it blows up...
Ann Heche was the other lead. Enough said.
Max the dog was the best one in the whole flick. :-)
Can Fox give us a day without telling us we are doomed?
It will be "Breaking News" 24/7 for weeks! I recommend they send Shep Smith to reprise his Katrina performance.
Mind that bus! What bus? *splat*
