Gov nixes homicide-fetus bill (WY Dem Gov. vetoes Laci & Connor law equivalent)

CHEYENNE - Gov Dave Freudenthal late Friday afternoon vetoed a bill that would have increased the penalty for killing a pregnant woman, on grounds it would plunge the state into the debate on abortion.

Under Senate File 118, people convicted of killing a pregnant woman would be charged with two counts of homicide, with the additional count coming from the death of her fetus.

Supporters said the bill would offer justice to victims such as Laci Peterson and her 8-month-old fetus, who were found in the San Francisco Bay after she disappeared Christmas Eve 2002. Her husband, Scott Peterson, was convicted in November 2004 of killing her and the fetus she carried.

Freudenthal's veto message said that statements by proponents that it is not intended to be part of the abortion debate and was intended solely to increase the protection of pregnant women “may be somewhat disingenuous.”

“The United States Supreme Court, in Roe v. Wade, held that an unborn fetus is not a person for purposes of 14th Amendment protection,” the governor wrote. This Act makes it a homicide to terminate a pregnancy, without regard to the duration of the pregnancy, or the viability of the fetus.”

Bill co-sponsor Rep. Elaine Harvey, R-Lovell, said she was “very disappointed. I had no idea it was coming.”

“We were hoping to send a loud statement that you can't do this in Wyoming and get away with it,” Harvey said.

This was a really low-blow and underscores why no conservative should really vote for a Democrat, no matter how they represent themselves. This legislation is purely common sense, but his sleazy little veto message was that he thought it would bring the state into the abortion debate. This guy isn't worthy of Wyoming.

Hmm, must be afraid of the outcome.

“The United States Supreme Court, in Roe v. Wade, held that an unborn fetus is not a person for purposes of 14th Amendment protection,” the governor wrote. This statement may eventually go into the the history books as the reason for the fall of American society. :*( I am ashamed.

Strange... every person I know was once an "unborn fetus". I've also never known an "unborn (human) fetus" to be anything but a "person" once I've eventually met them.

Fraudenthal should be recalled. Does WY law allow that?

"Fraud" en - thal is exactly why you can not trust these people. Democrats are scumbags that would rather see murdered woman as inconveniences if they are pregnant, then stand up for simple right and wrong.

I agree 100%. The way he just nonchalantly dismissed a perfectly sound and bipartisan law is chilling. I wouldn't vote for a guy like this if someone paid me.

Thanks for the input.

Yet they re-elected Freudenthal in Wyoming. Goes to show Democrats, even in the Mountain West, are in the thrall of the abortion industry.

"on grounds it would plunge the state into the debate on abortion."

What's wrong with a debate on abortion? Oh, never mind, he's a Democrat. He wouldn't want an outcome that in any way limits abortion now would he?

On one hand, the Dems claim abortion is acceptable because it protects the "rights" of pregnant women. They claim the importance of "choice" for a woman. Then, on the other hand, they turn down this bill which would help to protect the rights of pregnant women. It would also protect "choice" as women like Laci want their children and know their child is not a "blob of tissue".

Exactly. "Moderate Democrats" are almost completely a myth.

The poor legislator in the story should not have been surprised. IT IS LONG PAST TIME TO STOP BEING SURPRISED BY ANYTHING THE RATS DO. WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE, LADY.
