More Men Report Sexual Harassment at Work

Robert DiGiacomo, for Yahoo! HotJobs

Defying assumptions about sexual harassment in the workplace, a record number of men reported being harassed by male colleagues last year, according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Cases filed by men made up 15.4 percent of the 12,025 sexual harassment charges in fiscal year 2006, compared to about 11 percent a decade ago, according to the EEOC.

New Realities in the Workplace

"There's no question this is not only a growing category of claims, but also a large societal problem of which we are just starting to see the tip of the iceberg," says Riki Wilchins, executive director of the Gender Public Advocacy Coalition, a nonprofit group based in Washington, D.C.

Although the statistics don't reveal whether the alleged harassers of men also are male, they typically are -- it's rare for a man to file charges against a female coworker or supervisor, says EEOC spokesman David Grinberg.

It's also unlikely that interactions in the workplace between men have become more hostile over the past 15 years.

This is a "you gotta be kidding me" alert.

I could tell you this was going to happen when major companies starting paying out astronomical amounts of money for sexual harassment.

Was bound to happen.

It's not too soon to panic, is it?

You were darned lucky. You could have met your "future job" as a result of that.

There is zero tolerance for sexual harassment if you are a male and doing it to a female.

"it's rare for a man to file charges against a female coworker or supervisor"

In that case, we've identified another opportunity for a growth area for the trial lawyers.

I was 18 / 19 and she 22 or 23. This was also at a grocery store, where for some reason everyone dated everyone. I would never risk the same thing now that I'm in my mid-20's and at a "real job". Those were some good days though =)

Then there should be suits against the fags that are Harassing these men...I could think of lots more to do to these perverts but it would get me into trouble..

It's more complicated than that. If the girl likes the guy, she will think there's something wrong with him if he *doesn't* flirt with her. If she doesn't like the guy he flirts with her, then she's a victim, and has to report it to the nanny.

The only way men in the workplace can get the playing field back to level again is to file their own complaints of harassment. These complaints from men should have come years ago. Fifteen years ago while working in HR I carried the business card of an attorney in San Diego who specialized in handling mens cases. I would tell my guys get your shot in if warranted and get it in first in writing.

same here...only I'm the wife in the relationship. We most definitely crossed some professional lines. But it resulted in marriage to a guy who gave me a redheaded little girl, so I'm at peace with it all :)

You might want to READ the article:

"it's important to note that in gender-based harassment, the aggressors -- and their victims -- are likely straight."

"We assume that the vast majority of the cases are not individuals who are necessarily gay or transgender, but they're in situations where there are these abrasive codes of masculinity to which men are expected to live up to."

i very much doubt that any real man would complain about being harrassed by a gay man. he'd likely slug him.
i'd bet that the vast majority of these cases are wussy girly men or gays that are harrassed based on sexuality. some of it may even be "good natured ribbing" that wuss boy takes personally.
