Obama's Audacity
Yahoo News/Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | Mon Mar 12, 7:19 AM ET | Tom Bevan

Posted on 03/12/2007 9:55:41 AM PDT by DBCJR

... March 2 the Philadelphia Inquirer ran a story about Craig Robinson... head coach of Brown University basketball team, and he also happens to be Barack Obama's brother in law... Early 1990s, his sister brought Obama home for the first time, Craig Robinson states ..."We were talking about a variety of things and he said, 'I'm thinking about running for president one day,' "

"I said, 'President? President of what?' "

... Robinson is talking about meeting him sometime in the early 1990's, probably during the latter half of 1991 when he returned to Chicago after graduating from Harvard Law and began work as a civil rights attorney (as stated above Barack and Michelle were married in 1992).

So, if Robinson's recollection is accurate, more than five years before Barack Obama first ran for elected office he was thinking and talking somewhat openly about running for President. ..This provides a revealing glimpse into Obama's ambition. The fact that he would say such a thing to his girlfriend's older brother on their first meeting ... speaks to a remarkably high level of confidence, ambition and, yes, audacity).

Part of Obama's appeal is that he appears refreshingly unambitious relative to his competition. Unlike Hillary, who seems to have spent every minute of the last ten years calculating each move with respect to its impact on her presidential ambitions, and unlike John Edwards, who has been running for President non-stop for the last five years, Obama has cultivated an image of being "the right man at the right moment." He's gone out of his way to make self deprecating remarks about his hyper popularity, and when discussing his thoughts about running for President he said more than once that "This is an office you can't run for just on the basis of ambition."

Don't even think about Hillary's running mate. This guy has his eye on Hillary's job (as she sees it). The clash is inevitable.

Jeez, shades of John Kerry believing he should be in charge of things from the time he was in college. Obama has done nothing but assemble a so-so list of talking points. He has no legislative record, let alone a record as an executive. Has his brother in law inadvertently called his bluff?

Are we out of serious issues to talk about? No pictures of him showing leg getting out of a limo?

This is the US where we used to say, "any child can grow up to be president." Also, don't we encourge go getters with motivation and drive?

This is much ado about nothing. And illustrative of the superficiality of American politics. Do we have to participate in this dumbing down?

My fondest wish is no election news for the next 7 months, but I'm spitting in the wind.

The guy's a genius:

"Hey! How are you! Nice to meet you! My name's Obama. Nice weather, huh? Say, you know what? I'm thinking of running for president some day. Maybe in 10 or 15 years. Got my strategy all laid out -- want to hear it? 'He's totally unambitious'. Catchy, huh? Yeah, I think it will really go over well if everyone thinks I'm the right guy at the right time. But, boy, I am gonna have to work like a dog to position myself to make that fall into place just right! Anyway, nice meeting you -- what was your name? Anyway, don't forget to vote me, when you get the chance!"

If he is as calculating as the article implies, he probably wouldn't want to VP a Clinton presidency for fear that any future scandals might stick to him and taint a run for the presidency as it did Gore.

So? Hitlery has been running for President since she started eating solid food.

That is a very good point. Obama is smart enough to have thought of that as well, I'm pretty sure.

What sane person would want Hillary for their VP, thus being the only standing between her and the presidency?

Bill Clinton was talking about running for President in kindergarten.

Disagree. When Hillary sucker-punches him he will meekly accept the VP slot. He's young enough to wait his turn.

Kind of like Bill Clinton and John sKerry.

If the old lady wasn't hanging around and the O-man had the backing of the Clinton organization, he could be a steamroller.

So what's the deal with his book? Is everybody in the country really buying it or is it a Soros purchase kinda thing to keep it at the top for, what, 6 months now?

Wouldn't surprise me if the book sales were being artificially pumped. Even so, it doesn't really take that many sales to get a book listed -- IOW it could be genuine interest.

I just find it hard to believe that the Obama-infatuation will last. Democrat frontrunners usually end-up roadkill.

If you go by what happened to Michael Steele in Maryland, blue-collar white democrats will never vote for Obama. The results of that experiment are 'in', as it were.

I don't care what anyone says. Anyone who runs for President has to have a gigantic ego #1, and huge amounts of ambition #2, and a desperate need for positive affermation.
