The crumbling Hugo Chávez power equation
PetroleumWorld ^ | March 10, 2007 | Gustavo Coronel

Posted on 03/10/2007 10:24:04 AM PST by FairOpinion

Hugo Chavez's power equation is based upon two main components: resources and strategy.

For about five years this equation worked well, with both components on the rise.

In the last year, however, his power equation has been weakening significantly.

His objective of leading a global crusade against the U.S. had proven to be extremely costly. He is said to have spent one billion dollars in trying, unsuccessfully, to gain a seat in the United Nations Security Council.

At this moment there are serious food shortages in Venezuela as he has increased government control over production and established unrealistic prices for foodstuffs. Inflation in the food sector is running at 36% for the year.

Unnecessary nationalizations, alignment with Iran (there is an unprecedented joint event in Washington, D.C., next Wednesday March 14, where the Iranian and the Venezuelan Ambassadors will appear together), a military alliance between Iran and Venezuela with the possibility of Argentina supplying nuclear expertise and equipment to Iran; acquisition of Russian submarines; the buying of coca from Bolivia; the request for constitutional changes leading to Chavez's unlimited re-election as president; his ruling by decree for the next 18 months, rendering the legislative power useless; the fiscal problems; the collapse of the food supply; the explosive increase of imports; the growing impatience of Chavez's political clients such as the Caribbean states and the Venezuelan poor; internal rumblings in the Venezuelan military; the paralysis of industrial activity; the highest inflation and unemployment rates in Latin America; the proliferation of popular protests all over the country, all of these factors speak of an increasingly weak Hugo Chavez power equation.

It is not improbable, therefore, that a change of regime in Venezuela could take place in the not too distant future.

The real story about Chaveza and Venezuela -- I hope the regime change happens sooner, rather than later.

We don't need a nuclear enemy in S America.

Hopefully, Hugo will soon join the long list of overthrown Latin American dictators. He will be lucky if he survives to drive a cab in Miami.

The best we could do to weaken petrodollar tyrants is to stop buying their oil.

The "Ceausescu solution".

(Ceausescu was the Romanian dictator who refused to give up totalitarianism peacefully in Romania, when other E. European countries were allowing the transition, so there was a bloody revolution, he was captured, tried and executed in about 24 hours -- on Christmas Day. The Venezuelans don't need to wait until Christmas.)

If we would drill in ANWR and off shore we would be a lot less dependent on foreign oil.

Good news!! '
I just drove by our local 'Citgo' station and the sign was being changed to "VALERO"

Chew on that, Hugo.

We own a small trucking company and have boycotted Citgo for the past two years.

It would be a lot cheaper for him to work to get Democrats elected and let them go about the business of destroying America. I mean, you can buy a lot of Democrats for a billion dollars.

Iran-Venezuela agreements total USD 8 billion

http://english.eluniversal.com/2007/03/07/en_pol_art_07A842425.shtml

Venezuelan Minister of Foreign Affairs Nicolás Maduro Tuesday was welcomed by President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the headquarters of the Iranian Government.

Maduro arrived in Iran on Monday from Syrian capital Damascus, where he met Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, Vice-President Farouk Al Share and Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs Wali al- Mualln.

In Tehran, Maduro kicked off a Venezuela-Iran cooperation committee, and Iranian Minister of Industry and Mines Ali Reza Tahmasbi told reporters that Iran and Venezuela so far have entered into agreements amounting to USD 8 billion, Efe reported.

Caracas and Tehran have initial 152 instruments, Tahmasbi said, adding that both governments "have started taking steps to implement some of these projects," but he would not disclose any further details.

"It would be a lot cheaper for him to work to get Democrats elected "

Don't give him any ideas!

On the other hand, how do we know he isn't already doing that? The funding of many leftists organizations are very tangled, to hide the source of their original funding.

Anti-Americanism only goes so far.

In the end, economics and a hungry stomach will dictate what happens.

This is Allende all over again. Hopefully, it will end the same way. The Latin American poor never ever learn the lesson.

"The best we could do to weaken petrodollar tyrants is to stop buying their oil."

Most oil gets mixed together from various sources before it goes to market. Quite often, you don't whose petroleum you're buying. Also, as long as the American left continues to hobble development of our own energy resources, we will need our enemies' oil to keep our economy on its feet. This is how liberals in concert with states like Saudi Arabia and Venezuela keep us held hostage.

I feel confident no Republican president would allow Venezuela and Chavez to go nuclear. Demoncrats on the other hand . . .

"... you can buy a lot of Democrats for a billion dollars."

Actually, he doesn't have to buy them. They already share the same goals.
