American Research Group poll. March 2-5, 2007. N=600 likely Republican primary and caucus voters nationwide. MoE ± 4.
Preference for Republican Presidential Nominee:
Rudy Giuliani 34%
John McCain 30%
Newt Gingrich 12%
Mitt Romney 7%
Sam Brownback 1%
Jim Gilmore 1%
Chuck Hagel 1%
Mike Huckabee 1%
George Pataki 1%
Ron Paul 1%
Tom Tancredo 1%
Tommy Thompson 1%
Duncan Hunter --
Unsure 9%
TitansAFC 1% (and rising)
TOPICS: Government; News/Current Events; Politics/Elections
KEYWORDS: mccain; newt; nowaymccain; rinowalk; romney; rudy; traitorjohn
This poll is worth posting, since it is a poll of actual LIKELY PRIMARY VOTERS, as opposed to "adults" or "registered voters." It is a bit of a better "snapshot," if you will, of the race at the beginning of March 2007. I added in the last name. ;-)

McCain is still a strong contender it seems, that is surprising after some of his recent words and actions. But he has been promoted by the media for at least 7 years now! They tried to make him seem inevitable, like Hillary. And for some he may still be regarded as the front-runner. They call him that on Fox.

Who knows...the next Republican nominee may not even be on that list.

It's an ARG Poll.
You might as well be posting a poll conducted by Keith Olbermann.

Fred Thompson should've been included.

I'm not a Fred fan. He was the primary mover of McCain-Feingold. In fact, it was originally McCain-Feingold-THOMPSON. He and McCain and Hagel are joined at the hip.
However, if he gets in, which seems increasingly likely, he'll make mincemeat of the current field.

If Fred Thompson enters the race, Giuliani, Romney, McCain, Gingrich and Hunter will join him on the revised list. Everyone else will fall away. Being an actor is an advantage for him. People might feel that they already "know" him.

I wouldn't be too concerned at this point. I am an avid political junkie and I am absolutely unfamiliar with Duncan Hunter, other than to know a lot of people around here really like him and tout him. Hopefully he will get into the mix as time goes on, along with several others I know nothing about, and we'll have best primary races the GOP has had in years.

Can you imagine if Speaker Newt Gingrich were actually running for the presidency? I see him as our savior from Hillary/Edwards/Osama.

New to FR so please forgive me if my lingo is off a bit.
Rudy has my vote and my support. The only thing important to me in this election is security. Without that, nothing else matters. In November, I held out for the 'perfect' conservative and watched Congress go to the Dems. Now, I'm watching those Dems lose a war.
I'm not willing to hold out in 2008.

I wouldn't worry too much. What everyone seems to be forgetting is that it's still 10 months until the Iowa Caucus. Duncan Hunter didn't register in the poll because he has the absolute least name recognition of all the serious Republican candidates. That can always change if he raises enough money and builds enough of an organization, which he still has plenty of time to do. Make no mistake, though, Duncan Hunter is only popular and well known among serious activists (such as those of us who spend an unhealthy amount of time listening to talk radio and posting on online forums). Even Tancredo has a bigger public presence than he does right now. He has an uphill battle, but not an impossible one.

I noticed you had to go back 20 years to find when McCain still acted like a conservative. He's come a long way since then. Mostly downhill.
So McCain doesn't have a picture of himself walking beside Theodore Roosevelt?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news,
But the owner of this site has expressly denounced Rudy Giuliani as a candidate.
If it is Rudy you seek to promote out of desperation, this is not the site on which to do it.
The man has never served in the military, and in fact sought preferential deferments to avoid serving his country. What you see to think will make him the hero of our security is beyond me; how does a Pro-Amnesty, open borders Rudy keep us safe - especially in contrast to other GOP candidates who are much better on ALL the issues?
