vanity*** looking for LIVE Hurricane Katrina threads...

Posted on 03/09/2007 4:30:10 AM PST by InvisibleChurch

I was down in NO last week helping with the clean up effort and am interested in reading any of the live-as-it-happened threads ... the search engine takes me to about 2 weeks post-katrina then refuses to find more threads

as it is, NO is STILL a huge mess, especially in the ninth ward and other poor parts of town

one of the most interesting sites is a huge field about an hour north of of NO (US 59) where thousands upon thousands of FEMA trailers are parked, maybe 10-12,000, it's hard to say... and there are police officers guarding the entrance 24-7 ....... still... I spoke to a worker on NO and he said that they are being moved to Indiana and Hope, Arkansas ... the govt will pay $1.53/mile to have them removed ... they'd originally paid $3/mile to have them moved from Indiana .... 800 miles x $3 = 2,400$ per trailer per trip

I've rented Nat'l Geographics version of HK last night .... though there is blame enough to go around, it is gov blanco who ought to be in jail for negligence and corruption... W offered to help several times, especially with Natl Guard taking control La Guard and run relief efforts but she refused every time .... so much death and destruction might have been avoided but if not for her

"NO is STILL a huge mess, especially in the ninth ward and other poor parts of town"

NO has been a huge mess for years and years. How does this area compare to the areas of Alabama and Mississippi that were hit by Katrina?

What are those poor unemployed folks doing to help themselves?

That is exactly right! The reporter from CNN, Solidad Obrien (sp?) had a transcript with her asking Nagin questions and Nagin said that he, Blanco, and Bush were on Air Force 1 and Bush asked Blanco to bring in the troops and Blanco said she needed 24 hours to think about it. I believe this was on a Tuesday.

I think that this mess was probably due to keeping so many people on welfare in one dangerous spot and letting them make the decision to leave or not. In Texas, if they (state leaders) tell you to get out of a dangerous area, you do not question them, you just get the f out, by foot if you have no other choice. The banks of buses unused speaks loudly of the local governments lack of planning. Look at other states handling natural disasters. Nothing like NO with their blaming the federal government. I totally agree with you!

You are exactly right! In any emergency it is the City that must respond first. When they get overwhelmed it is their duty to bring in the County. When the County gets overwhelmed it is their duty to bring in the State. When the State gets overwhelmed it is their duty to bring in the Federal Government. The City, County (Parish), and State failed. That made it close to impossible for the Federal Government to do anything as they take their commands from the State.

All this "Bush, Bush, Bush" ranting is complete nonsense and just simple minded politics for mushy liberal pea brains.

Following Katrina in real-time on FR was an amazing experience: the warnings, NWS call to evacuate, Bush's call to Nagin, the roll-call of Gulf Coast Freepers, the parked buses, the breaking of the levees, and the aftermath.

Those idiots Shep Smith and Geraldo and Anderson Cooper would have known more about the storm and who was to blame for the evacuation debacle if they'd been on FR. Instead, they just stood in front of the Superdome whining and yelling.

NautiNurse, thank you again for the endless hours you spent maintaining those threads.

Thanks for your kind thoughts. That was an experience I would rather not repeat in this lifetime! I'll never forget Nagin's Saturday night presser where he said he was consulting with his attorney to decide if he could order an evacuation.
