Comic superhero Captain America is assassinated
New York Daily News ^ | March 7 2007 | Ethan Sacks

Captain America is dead.

The Marvel Entertainment superhero, created in 1941 as a patriotic adversary for the Nazis, is killed off in Captain America #25, which hits the stands Wednesday.

As Captain America emerges from a courthouse building, he is struck by a sniper's bullet in the shoulder and then hit again in the stomach, blood seeping out of his star-spangled costume.

His death is sure to ignite controversy in the comic book world - still reeling from Superman's death in 1993 and resurrection the following year - and even political pundits, who may see Captain America's demise as an allegory for the United States.

"It's a hell of a time for him to go. We really need him now," said co-creator Joe Simon, 93, after being informed of his brainchild's death.

Simon and artist Jack Kirby came up with the character in 1941 as an adversary for Adolf Hitler. Since then, the patriotic hero has appeared in an estimated 210 million copies sold in 75 countries.

The shooter is believed to be Muhammed Al-Bahgdadi Al-Akbar. The FBI has already ruled that terrorism is not a motive.

It's so true I almost couldn't bring myself to laugh.

This is captain America calling
This is captain America calling
Help me now I’m calling you
Catch me now I’m falling
I’m in your hands, it’s up to you
Catch me now, I’m falling
I stood by you through all of your depressions
And I lifted you when you were down
Now it’s your chance to do the same for me
I call you up, and your secretary tells me that you’ve gone out of town
This is captain America calling
This is captain America calling

Reeling? That's a bit much

Okay in response to your post, I've tried for the past five minutes to post a picture of the Simpsons comic book guy... now I have to start getting ready for work. Argh! Anyway, it would have to be the Simpsons guy who's reeling. :)

Yep, in a about a year or so(or sooner) we will probably find out that the super soldier serum can recover the dead(which bring up some other continuity with other people who had taken the super soldier serum).

A stunt. Now the bad guys will relax, ---- but he will go underground, with a new persona, seek and wipe out the dastardly foes and uphold the rights of justice and freedom for all!

I remember how Marvel floundered trying to bring their movies to the big screen.

Of all the characters, Captain American is intended to be symbolic.

Sad considering how radical left they have decended into promoting.

No way. Do a quick bit of Googling. (I had to double check myself) Cap was an Army enlistee named Steve Rodgers who volunteered for Operation Rebirth, which gave him the Super Soldier Serum.

He was an art student wanting to enlist in the Army, according to Marvel.

http://www.marvel.com/universe/Captain_America_%28Steve_Rogers%29

Steve Rogers was a scrawny fine arts student specializing in industrialization in the 1940's before America entered World War II. He attempted to enlist in the army only to be turned away due to his poor constitution. ...

Rogers was given a costume modeled after the American flag, a bulletproof shield, a personal sidearm and the codename Captain America. He was also given a cover identity as a clumsy infantry private at Camp LeHigh in Virginia.

This is waaay more important that actually working. :)

Captain America #25,

Okay, the comic's been printed for like 100 years and it's up to issue 25? I guess they want to start yet another new run, with another issue #1, just so that they make another new collector's item.

They just "re-invented" or "re-imaged" Cap, so they aren't getting rid of him.

Long time readers might remember that remember that Cap was frozen in ice for 20 years and brought back in the 60s. But that would make him really old, even with the Super Soldier Serum. So in the recent Reboot of the whole system, he was found by Nick Fury 50 year later. Bucky was still alive (although really old) and married to Cap's old sweetheart. Why Bucky stopped superheroing is anyone's guess.

Now if marvel wants to go with continuity, there will be another Capt America because there has always been, even during the time he was frozen. Two other heroes stepped up to become Captain America because the country needed there to be a symbol. And because it allowed marvel to explain why the CA of the 50s was so frickin' racist (and they killed that one off).

Okay, enough ranting. I have to get to class.

I don't recall any reeling. Some guffawing or gee-wilickering and maybe a great-caesar's-ghost thrown in for good measure. But never any reeling. :)

Why did they do him in with a snipper rifle?

Why not a SUV?

Something tells me that the FLAG serum (which turned Steve Rogers into Cap in the first place) will heal him, albeit slowly.

There's something disquieting about that statement.
