JAKARTA (AFP) - A passenger jet burst into flames on landing in the central Indonesian city of Yogyakarta on Wednesday, witnesses told local radio.

"The plane is burnt. The fire came suddenly from the front wheel," one witness, Hariman, told ElShinta radio.

There was no immediate mention of casualties, and the number of passengers aboard the jet was not immediately known.

The Detikcom news website said the plane was a jet from the country's flag carrier Garuda Indonesia.

Another passenger who escaped the blaze told ElShinta radio there were still passengers aboard as the fire raged.

Indonesia's flight safety record has come under renewed scrutiny since an Adam Air Boeing 737-400 with 102 people on board crashed into the sea off the island of Sulawesi on New Year's Day with no survivors.

Yes, if it crashed, that would seem to be - well, not unusual for that airline.

I flew their old 747-200 from LAX. Not the greatest service, but it was a free ticket.

Lao Air, yes! White knuckle all the way!

And CAAC back in the early very early eighties (Xian to Peking). Those flights created a necessity for frequent prayers throughout the flight and one long toilet visit afterwards.

Well, either Lao with a fairly new ATR 72, or the scariest airlines, Phuket Air with a 25 year old YS-11.

Easy choice.

Fire in the nosewheel?

Brakes locking? ... landing gear failed to deploy completely and scraped the wheel and tire?

UPDATE:

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A commercial jetliner caught fire as it landed at an airport on Indonesia's Java island on Wednesday, an airline official said.

Operations director of national carrier Garuda Capt. Ari Sapari said authorities were trying to rescue passengers onboard the Boeing 737-400. Media reports said more than 100 people were believed to have been on the plane.

"It caught alight when it landed," he said giving no more details.

The incident happened at Jogyakarta airport in central Java, Sapari said.

Witness Hariman Siregar said the plane was completely gutted.

One passenger who survived told local TV station RCTI TV that "before landing I felt the plane shake strongly."

"We overshot the runway, then I heard the sound of an explosion and ran through an emergency exit," continued passenger Muhammad Dimyati. "I believe many passengers remained trapped on board."

It doesn't say it was Garuda, it says it was one plane away from a Garuda jet. I'm thinking it was Merpati or Manunggal Air, or one of the other little companies.

Still, it isn't good. It's always a trust in God's sovereign protection when you fly over there.

You're leaving out all the African airlines with old soviet planes that haven't had much maintenance.
