Quinn Switches Sides

March 5, 2007 at 12:49 pm by Elizabeth Benjamin

GOP consultant and former state GOP Executive Director Brendan Quinn, who was involved in the state Republican Party’s efforts to keep U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Az, off New York’s presidential primary ballot in 2000, confirmed he is now working for McCain and setting up his Empire State campaign for the ‘08 election.

Quinn said he is currently employed as a consultant and has no title, although a formal announcement of a more delinated role may soon be in the offing.

Among McCain’s other New York supporters is former U.S. Sen. Alfonse D’Amato, Quinn said.

There are ironies on top of ironies here.

First of all, Quinn’s work for McCain makes him diametrically opposed to his former boss, ex-state GOP Chairman Bill Powers, who was tapped last week to serve the New York co-chair of former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s presidential campaign.

Powers was chairman when the party was working on behalf of then-Texas Gov. George Bush to keep McCain off New York’s ballot (they eventually gave up; Bush won anyway).

Powers and Giuliani clashed in 1994 when the then-mayor bucked the then-chair to endorse former Democratic Gov. Mario Cuomo instead of backing the Republican candidate hand-picked by Powers and D’Amato: Then-state Sen. George Pataki, who appeared recently at an event in Manhattan with McCain.

Quinn said he’s had a change of heart about McCain because he doesn’t think Rudy can “get to the primary.”

“When you start looking at things that Republican base voters care about - abortion, gay marriage, family values - I don’t think you find Rudy in sync with those values,” Quinn said.

McCain might be trying to get a dig on Rudy like they say but also he is trying to step on Hillary's toes too. He's thinking long term. If he wins the nomination he might have to contend with her.

Anything can happen between now and the primary. Even though I support Rudy I know that even though he is high in the polls now anything can happen and someone like McCain or Romney or Duncan Hunter can shoot past him and Rudy might lose. I will support whomever wins. It's very important that we retain the presidency.

But isn't McCain dead? I thought there was no point to the primary anymore, too, because Rudy has already won it?

If it's Rudy vs. McCain, I'll go door-to-door for McCain.

“When you start looking at things that Republican base voters care about - abortion, gay marriage, family values - I don’t think you find Rudy in sync with those values,” Quinn said.
The only problem with Quinn's analysis is
  1. We like Rudy because he did not oppose us in our face. He is what he is but we don't expect more of him.
  2. We don't like McCain because he opposed us for so many years, in our face, when he should have stood up for us and America instead of helping the Democrats to take down our country and our military.
  3. We are deeply worried about Queen Hillary.

The Republican party in New York is currently almost defunct. Pataki left a royal mess behind on the state level, and Bloomberg is somewhere to the left of Lenin. So I imagine the Republicans in NY are desperately grabbing at any straw that might tide them over until things get better again.

Well I am glad Quinn managed to get hired about one month before McCain sinks into total oblivion. Quinn needs to lining up his April gig pretty soon as well.

A pro McCain thread?

I have never seen one before.

McCain is my favorite among the so-called top 3.

He'll get my vote. Rudy? Never.

First the out-of-nowhere SC Spartanburg straw poll victory, then the CPAC poll. He came in at 12% support in the latter poll, but only 2% behind Newt, 3% behind Brownback who I readily admit are both more conservative than McCain, 5% behind Giuliani, and only 9% behind the winner, Mitt Romney. He received more support than Tancredo.

Since McCain is the winner, as opposed to any other camp, the SC straw poll will be dismissed as meaningless (I openly give kudos to the Hunter camp for their tremendous showing). But perhaps the most excoriating evidence is the CPAC poll. He should have been getting single-digit support for his "snub" and yet we see that even there he is getting over 50% the support of the frontrunner.

National tracking polls may have McCain trailing in second but his position is still firmly around 20% support. This ground can be made up in weeks.
