Will Ann Coulter never learn?
There are some things you just can't say, not even in jest. And at the top of that list right now is anything derogatory about the "gay" lifestyle or, worse yet, anything that is considered a slur against homosexuals, a protected class of people with special rights which entitle them to live free from all offense.
Ann surely should have known this. After all, hasn't she seen any of the countless films or TV shows produced by Hollywood in recent years which promote homosexuality as a perfectly normal and acceptable alternative lifestyle? Indeed, the homosexuals in virtually every one of these films and TV shows are smarter, funnier, hipper and more humane than the heterosexual characters.
Hasn't she seen or read any of the endless media stories promoting homosexuality in the same glowing manner, with never a critical word to be uttered? Doesn't she know that our schools are teaching children that homosexuality is a completely legitimate practice, and one we must all embrace and support as such whether we engage in it or not?
Yet despite all of this, Ann had the unmitigated gall to get up before an overflow crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday, while the cameras were still rolling, and say this: "I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word 'faggot,' so I so kind of an impasse, can't really talk about Edwards."

No, in fact I think that everyone ought to be able to say what they want to...if it brings criticism, then thats the price you pay...the liberals want "THEIR" free speech, if conservatives say anything then the liberals call it attacking..

So you are saying he is a faggot? But not gay? No, I never said either one. But I do have to say that I think it's difficult to defend Coulter on this. For someone as "educated" as she is, it was a pretty sophmoric attempt at humor. Dumb, actually.

comparing homosexuality with a particular raceOf course the comparison is specious but no less a culture warrior than Bill Bennett went nuts about this, waving the same flag, this a.m. on Morning in America. Bennett is urbane and wellspoken, but to hear him today one would have thought he was a Gauleiter in the PC Sprichtpolizei. I was disappointed in him.

What she and her defenders seem to be looking for, however, is the ability to say whatever she wants, no matter how offensive, without the need to face the consequences.Totally wrong. She will "face the consequences" and do fine without our help. The "consequences" are, after all, a raft of fellow conservatives PMS-ing about something that didn't even make the news on Sunday, showing how much the liberals give a s--t about such things.
I have to say, I am more impressed by David Bonior and John-boy's reaction than I am by the sputtering deacons of the Church Conservative.

...there should be no place for such name-calling in political debate. One of the tactics of running a campaign,I learned in high school, was "name-calling".Giuliani's an idiot.

Duncan Hunter has no reason to comment on Ann Coulter's exercise of her free speech, and here's hoping that his campaign managers don't ask him to.Duncan Hunter is running for President of the United States, not President of the Free Republic fan club. If a reporter asks him about it, he will respond exactly like the other three, and rightly so.
Mind-boggling that Freepers think he'd respond any differently. How far gone are some of us here? Ann Coulter called Senator Edwards a faggot from a GOP podium for goodness sakes!! You really think Congressman Hunter is going to applaud it? LOL!

Ann should be able to say whatever she wants. I'd have not said that particular F word, but it didn't do any harm. Now, let's talk about Bill Maher, and his remarks about Vice-President Cheney.
Way back in middle school (we called it junior high) one of my teachers was talking about kids who smoked, and the words he used got us all to giggling - "taking a fag out behind the gym". We didn't know then that a fag was another name for a cigarette.

I was disappointed in himI am an admirer of Michelle Malkin and Bill Bennett, but they're both ignorant on this issue. Bill Bennett was suckered by the homosexual activists on the death rates of homosexuals vs heterosexuals. He is still naive that way today.

Oops! I called Edwards the enemy. I might have hurt someone's feelings so I guess it's off to the re education camp for me, too.

I don't think it's too much to ask that those on "our side", who are jostling with the left to seek the 'moral high ground' by condemning Ann for such "offensive" speech and behavior, should recognize that honesty demands defending Ann's pointing out the hypocrisy of the left even as they express their disapproval of the way she said it. A general condemnation cedes the moral high ground to hate-filled, less than moral, leftists, who do not deserve it. It also allows the left to reinforce their stereotype of Conservatives by condemning Ann, who does not deserve it.Precisely!

Remember the days when everyone was called a fag or Pollock?? When they made movies like Blazing Saddles rather than Vagina monologues?
