Webb to Introduce Legislation Barring Funding For Military Action Against Iran
Monday , March 05, 2007
WASHINGTON A Democratic senator is introducing legislation Monday that would deny funding for the Bush administration to take military action against Iran without getting congressional approval first.
Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., has long argued that Iran must be part of a regional solution to end the war in Iraq, and has repeatedly concerns that the Bush administration deems the 2002 congressional resolution authorizing force in Iraq applicable to Iran.
Webb's amendment would prohibit Bush from spending any money on a "unilateral military action in Iran without the express consent of the Congress."
Webb told FOX News last week that some exceptions would be permitted, for instance it would allow to the continuation of the current effort to stop Iranians interfering in Iraq. Webb said his concern came about when he compared the 2002 authorization to go to war in Iraq with the presidential signing statement accompanying it clarifying prerogatives the administration deemed permissible under the authorization.
He said the ambiguity in the signing statement leaves room for the president to interpret the authorization as authorizing war with Iran. And, Webb said, according to the signing statement, the president retains the right to take military action "to respond to threats against American military interests."
Webb said his decision to lay out the prohibition is an effort at "putting the stake in the ground."

LOL...I just posted a remark about this on the Senate site.
Yes...isn't it nice that they want to put forth legislation telling the POTUS that he can't attack a country that he hasn't indicated he is going to attack???
He's impotent. He can't bring himself to propose a real bill cutting off funding for the war he claims we should never have fought, so instead he proposes a bill to cut off funding for a war we aren't even fighting.
My memory isn't very good, but isn't that exactly what happened in South Dakota with Thune in 2004?
But, Webb continued, "the situation that we have right now where we continue to talk only about the military side again, it's half a strategy."
Just dam!
If Webb would have only been around in 1943 we could have avoided most of that WWII thing.
After getting our butts kicked all over the Pacific and massacred as Kasserine Pass we should have talked to Tojo, Hitler and Mussolini. Why that would have solved everything. Why didn't anyone think of that?!?
And who were the idiots running things back then? All we had to do was talk darn it. All that military stuff was only half the strategy. Sheesh, what a bunch of maroons.
Webb is quickly reaching the anti-American delusional actions of his cohort murtha and he's only been in office a couple months. It's going to be a long six years.
I believe it was 2002. I did more research on the subject after watching the Virginia election be stolen right in front of my eyes and it seems like it's the same modus operandi every time.
Sounds like a good time to unload on Iran NOW
Did he introduce legislation calling barring funding for Al Queso from invading Virginia?
My father always used to tell me "if it's not close, the Democrats can't cheat."
And when Iran attacks us, which they are already doing in Iraq, then what?
Our enemies favorite party is at it again
So if we get Israel to go along with us, then it's okay...right!
No surprise.
I have noticed that whenever these dems are asked about how they think their chances are of getting these goofy bills passed...most of them will say something like...
"If we don't NOW, we will in 2009"....
IOW...this is all for show and for campaigning for the dems.
Now, now, Howlin....LOGIC is not allowed in politics.
You are SO smart, Bah...of course we can!!
Game, set, match, to you!
I've noticed that too. I guess it's their way of saying they're impotent.
Webb just told the Luntic of Iran to go ahead and wipe Israel off the map .. because the Dems in Congress will stop the President from sending in the military
LOL...that is true, and I have read a few things that say that they are hearing about it from their left wingnuts that expected them to completely reverse course.
They were promised that we would get out of Iraq if the dems won...we are still there...and the loonies are going nuts.
