"I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word faggot, so I so kind of an impasse, cant really talk about Edwards," Ann Coulter said today at CPAC. Her audience seemed to to evince both shock and delight.
The Human Rights Campaign's Joe Solomnese was not happy.
To interject this word into American political discourse is a vile and disgusting way to sink the debate to a new, all-time low. Make no doubt about it, these remarks go directly against what our Founding Fathers intended and have no place on the schoolyard, much less our countrys political arena.
Next, there'll be calls for Republican candidates to disassociate themselves from Coulter's remarks. Unfairly, ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney faces the biggest burden: he spoke right before Coulter and praised her... not knowing what she planned to say.
Get a grip. Most people can't name the Vice President of the United States or a single Supreme Court Justice. They wouldn't know what CPAC was if they tripped over it.
No...sigh!...that's my point (how many times do I have to explain this???). All they'll know by Monday is that Ann called Edwards a fag.
Washington chose to use an anti-gay slur while employed in an an industry which is notoriously gay-friendly.
This isn't tyranny---it's job security.
If I were a Hunter supporter, I'd be furious. She ruined the day."

If Hunter can't overcome this non-event, he should not run for President. He could then qualify for Ann's epithet.
Oh please. Explain it to me.
Explain how this beats Anna Nicole's funeral. Or the string of twisters that tore apart several states. Or the fact that if and when it runs it will run on a Saturday, the lowest newspaper audience day of the week.
This is Ann Coulter. The left has spent many years convincing their minions -- and yes, many Republicans apparently -- that she is evil incarnate. So why would it surprise anyone that she says anything remotely outrageous?
So the story is that she declined to call Edwards a "fag" because she didn't want to be sent to rehab. And what is the second day story? And the third day story? Where are the legs on this one?
You are overestimating the importance, the timing, and the legs of a story like this. Even moreso, you are overestimating the awareness of the average American. It just isn't there.
I am not a Coulter fan but for me this situation falls into the category of 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'. IMO, Edwards deserves any disrespect that comes his way. However, he may not feel that he needs to be defended for what she said.
There are other ways of saying the same thing. I disagree with Ann on this one, both in her use of the term (it is inappropriate in public) and that it isn't fitting to Edwards. Besides, whether or not he is on the other side, I always thought Edwards to be an incredibly handsome man with an incredibly horrible accent (and I ususally adore southern accents).
LOL!!! Check out the MSM websites and show me where there's a story on Hunter's speech.
Hunter's problem now is name recognition.
Ann sucked up all the air that would have been left over from Mitt and Rudy...and might have possibly gone to Hunter.
Now, now... there's only one 'g' in fagot.
Don't put words into my posts that are not there.
Is it really bad behavior to use non PC words?
Is it really crude?
If it was reversed with Kerry saying it about Ann, I bet the drive by media would think it was a howler and nothing but the sharp wit of a great mind.

...you tell me...when the left calls Bush a murderer or Hitler, is that bad behavior?....is that crude?... I think so....and honestly, I don't care what the heathen MSM think, I am more concerned about what middle America and mainstream conservatives think.... I'm not alone as this thread shows that many people think Ann is crude and tactless....I actually agree with alot of her sentiments in theory (not this one) but she uses lousy judgment in my opinion trying to be funny...
I concur. That was the first thing I thought when I read her comment. She did this quite purposely.
Conservatives turned out in large numbers and voted strongly Republican in 2006. We got killed among indys.
Betcha Rush talks about it.
Hunter won't be hurt by this. Mitt Romney, on the other hand, is going to be called upon to disown Ann Coulter in his next 50 interviews because she said this while endorsing him.
And now, suddenly, every time he says something principled about gay marriage, it's going to be paired with Ann's stupid comment.
She got attention for herself, but Mitt is a friendly fire casualty. He deserves better. And I think that she'll have plenty more speaking gigs in the future, but people seeking actual election will hold her more at arm's length.
Who are you referring to, Edwards or Coulter?
uh...yeah, we all know what the 1st ammendment says. Does she have a "right" to say what she said? Of course. Our soldiers are dying as true warriors for her right to say it.
But does that mean she should have the expectation of respect for saying it? Of course not! Even people like me, who find her wickedly amusing are disgusted by her comment. Sarcasm taken to extremes and over-used is not flattering to a man OR a woman, particularly one like Ann, who prides herself on command of the English language.
As articulate and correct as she may be on the side of Conservatism, she should be ashamed and condemned for making that kind of insinuation. There is no other way to interpret it. Personally, i'll bet it wasn't planned or in her speech at all. Sometimes when she's talking out of the side of her mouth to be charming and flirtatious, she can made huge errors in judgement that cost her the admiration she seeks.
If anyone on the other side of us (Dems) would ever make such a comment about someone in our camp, we would carve them up and make every attempt to ruin them personally and politically. I'm curious to watch and see what our side does in response to her loose lips.
The tongue is a raging fire.
It's only a word,freedom of speech etc,etc.
