Emails show sailor's support for jihad while still on active duty
An update on this story. "Terror suspect's e-mail unveiled," from 3TV:
In federal documents obtained by 3TV, Hassan Abujihaad is accused of conspiring to kill Americans and disclosing classified information.
The Department of Homeland Security reportedly discovered several e-mail exchanges between late 2000 and fall of 2001 between Hassan Abujihaad and Azzam Publications.
Azzam Publications are Web sites that sell videos and CD roms that promote a "violent jihad."
The following e-mails allegedly occurred while Abujihaad was a sailor in the United States Navy aboard the USS Benfold.
Unedited for malapropisms:
In July of 2001, referring to the attack on the USS Cole, Abujihaad writes in an e-mail: "I am a Muslim station on board a U.S. warship currently operating deployed to the Arabian Gulf. It shall be noted before Osama's latest video was viewed by massive people all over the world. That psychological anxiety had already set in on the America's forces everywhere. All this is due to the martyrdom operation against the USS Cole."
He continues
"I want to let it be known that I have been in the Middle East for almost a total of three months. For these three months, you can truly see the effects of this psychological war fare taking a toll on junior and high-ranking officers.
But after the latest video supporting Palestine, the top brass and American officials were running around like headless chickens very afraid, wondering if there is a possible threat."
The response from Azzam Publications was
"I trust that you are doing your best to make sure that the other brothers and sisters in uniform are reminder that their sole purpose of existence in this Dunya [this world/this life] and is purely to worship our Lord and master, Allah."

"Germany's Anti-American Neurosis"
By James Lewis
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A neurotic obsession is like a bone stuck in your throat. You can't swallow it and you can't spit it out. That is how the German media are hooked on America. It doesn't look quite sane.
For Americans, the best web guide to the German media is davids medienkritik. (David's media critique).
What you find out on this passionately written site, devoted to fighting anti-American hatred, is that something very weird is going on between the Lowlands and Poland. Something neurotic, in tens of millions of minds. And while we know that you can't always generalize from media madness to ordinary people, we also know that the media swing a huge weight of influence. So when the German Organs of Propaganda go weird and hateful, get ready to worry. Really."

"Couple, pilot killed in plane crash"
By Ben Winslow and Pat Reavy
Deseret Morning News
Three people died when the small plane they were flying in broke apart in the skies over Utah's west desert.
Laura Seitz, Deseret Morning News
Tooele County Sheriff's Office detective Glen Tomboc photographs the wreckage of small plane that crashed Wednesday in the west desert near Clive.
Angela Miller and her husband, Jehrid, 37, were returning to Salt Lake City Wednesday night after celebrating her 35th birthday in Wendover. They and pilot Eric Henderson, 39, were killed.
The Utah Civil Air Patrol began looking for the plane after it was reported overdue and found the wreckage Thursday morning.
"It appears the plane fell apart in the air," Tooele County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Ron Matekel told the Deseret Morning News from the crash scene Thursday. "The wings came off in the air and the fuselage landed out here, upside down in the desert."
The single-engine Piper Cherokee went down about two miles north of Interstate 80, near Clive. The wreckage was scattered over several hundred yards of sagebrush and sand.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash. Deputies said a storm may have contributed to the accident. Wade Mathews, Tooele County's emergency services director, said high winds accompanied the storm.
The Utah Civil Air Patrol said the plane left the small airport in Wendover, Nev., at about 9 p.m. Wednesday, headed for the Salt Lake City International Airport. CAP searchers found the wreckage about 7:15 a.m. Thursday and notified the Tooele County Sheriff's Office."

"TOP STORY: Stolen explosives a threat say police"
08.03.2007
"Enough explosives to blow up several houses are somewhere in Hawke's Bay."
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Napier police have been approached by an 18-year-old farm worker who said he had a box of plastic explosives, detonators and wiring stolen from his car.
The teenager contacted Napier CIB detective Emmet Lynch after reading about the attempted destruction of a Church Road, Taradale, letterbox last Saturday night.
Police found a golf-ball sized chunk of plastic explosive and a detonator in the cactus-inspired letterbox of Harry Ziebe.
But the youth's approach to police reveals now that the amount found was the tip of an explosive iceberg.
The teenager said he had five 25cm sticks of "Powergel" explosive (about the length of a pet food roll) five detonators and electrical wiring stored in a box in his car.
Mr Lynch said the teenager was not being linked with the attack on the letterbox and had told police he had taken the items from a rural property in northern Hawke's Bay to "show off" to some people.
The farm owner had been contacted and told police the explosives had been safely stored on the property. He was upset they had been taken. The teenager had worked there and had legitimate access to the property.
"This is a lot of explosives to be missing," Mr Lynch said. "They are out there somewhere, in a huge quantity and in the wrong hands. Our real concern is if they fall into the hands of serious criminals.""

"Officers outgunned on U.S. border"
By Jerry Seper
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
March 9, 2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Last month, Mexican military officials in Matamoros, just south of Brownsville, Texas, stopped a tractor-trailer containing weapons and ammunition, along with a pickup truck fitted with armor and bulletproof glass.
The weapons included 18 M-16 assault rifles, one equipped with an M-203 40mm grenade launcher. Also seized were several M-4 carbines, 17 handguns of various calibers, 200 magazines for different weapons, 8,000 rounds of ammunition, assault vests and other military accessories.
While Mexican authorities have not determined the source of the weapons, the truck was registered in Texas and authorities think the weapons were being smuggled across the border from the United States. U.S. and Mexican law-enforcement authorities have long described Matamoros as a key shipping center for drugs, weapons and illegal aliens. "

China Not Strategic Adversary of U.S., Gates Says
By Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, March 8, 2007 China is not a strategic adversary of the United States, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said during a news roundtable yesterday.
I do not see China at this point as a strategic adversary of the United States, Gates said. It's a partner in some respects. It's a competitor in other respects. And so we are simply watching to see what they're doing.
Chinese government officials announced last week that the Chinese military budget would increase 17 percent. This would be the 19th year of double-digit growth in defense spending, DoD officials said. China will budget roughly $45 billion for defense.
However, the real size of the Chinese budget could be twice as much, a defense official said today on background. The nature of the regime is such that defense spending could be hidden, and this lack of transparency is a hindrance to better Sino-American relations, the official said.
I think that greater transparency would help from the standpoint of the Chinese in terms of both what they're doing and what their strategies are, their intent in modernizing their forces. A greater openness about the purposes (would help), Gates said during the roundtable. My guess is that what they've announced does not represent their entire military budget. ... I think one of the most significant things they could do to provide reassurance to people is greater openness or transparency about what they're doing.
The increase alone doesnt worry Gates, as the money will buy more capability, but does not reveal the countrys intentions. China is building its capabilities and, over the past 20 years, has moved forward on modernizing and streamlining the Peoples Liberation Army and its rocket forces. The country also recently conducted a successful anti-satellite missile test.
In addition, the Chinese have invested in more and quieter submarines, state-of-the-art fighter/bombers and better communications and computer equipment for command and control purposes, DoD officials said.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Marine Gen. Peter Pace agreed that the Chinese have built capabilities, but tried to provide context on whether China is a threat to the United States. A threat has two fundamental parts to it: One is capacity, and two is intent, Pace said. When you see the global capacity growing in any area, we need to make sure that the United States military's capable of handling any threat that might develop, without regard to current intent.
This is why in the budget, ... there's not only the money for continuing the global war on terror, but also ensuring that we have the Air Force we need, the Navy we need and all the things that we need for conventional battle, so that our potential adversaries don't miscalculate our capacities, he added.
Pace said the United States doesnt develop capacities aimed at any one country.
We look at the types of capacities that are coming on line, regardless of country, the general said. We assure ourselves that we can deal with that capacity and that we have overmatching capacity for that. And where we don't,
we ask in the budget for the funding to be able to address that gap.
Pace said in Indonesia in February that it was important to keep engaging China.
Trade between the United States and China has grown exponentially in the last several years; that is good, he said during a news conference in Jakarta on Feb. 13. I think the more nations trade with each other and become dependent on each other, the less likely they are going to find their way into some kind of a conflict.

"Arabic speakers monitor Net chats"
By Nicholas Kralev
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
March 9, 2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: ""We want to make sure that U.S. views are present in the Arabic cyberspace," said Jeremy Curtin, acting coordinator of the Bureau of International Information Programs at the State Department.
"The two people who were hired just before Christmas monitor Arabic sites on current affairs in the Middle East and other issues we are interested in," he said. "They identify themselves as U.S. government employees.""
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "In addition to the new digital outreach team, the State Department employs as many as a dozen Arabic speakers who monitor various news outlets in the Middle East. Some of them also help a so-called rapid-response team that reads all lead stories in the Arab press and writes guidance for U.S. embassies in the region if a response is deemed necessary or useful."

Muslims call for beheading of Christian preacher who called them killers
But of course. What better way to prove to Eli Soriano that Islam is peaceful than peacefully to separate his head from his body?
From AP, with thanks to Davsmi:
Filipino Muslims display a banner, which reads 'Behead Those Who Insult Islam,' and t-shirts with a wanted sign during a rally Wednesday March 7, 2007, at a downtown Manila square , to protest recent televised preaching by a Christian sect leader Eli Soriano, who alleges that Muslims are killers. More than 1,000 Muslims took part in the rally and demanded Soriano, who is currently in hiding, be extradited back to the Philippines so he can face charges being brought against him. This warden message is to alert American citizens living in or traveling to Mato Grosso do Sul to an increased number of dengue fever cases in that area because of heavy rains. Since January 1st, 2007, 42,072 dengue cases have been recorded. There have been 28,032 cases in the city of Campo Grande alone. According to the latest update on February 26th, 2007, a total of six deaths from hemorrhagic dengue fever were confirmed in the cities of Aquidauana, Laguna Caarapã, Dourados, Tres Lagoas, Amambaí and Jardim. However, according to the Secretary of Health of Mato Grosso do Sul, the number of new cases is diminishing because of less rain recently. American citizens are reminded to take care when traveling to that area or, if possible, to postpone their trips to Mato Grosso do Sul to a later date. Further information on Dengue fever prevention and treatment is available from the Centers for Disease Control at: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/dengue/.

Iran offers Russia cash to unblock nuclear plant
Published: 03.09.07, 12:20 / Israel News
Iran offered Russia more money on Friday to overcome construction delays at the Russian-built Bushehr nuclear power station.
The United States has been pushing Russia to stop building the Bushehr plant in southwest Iran because it suspects Tehran will use the atomic know-how to make nuclear weapons. The Russian contractor building the plant said Iran owed about $50 million in missed payments and construction would be delayed as a result. Russia had been due to deliver the first nuclear fuel this month. (Reuters)

Former Iranian General and assistant defense minister Ali Rez Asghari left Iran using a new passport and pseudonym and managed to smuggle important intelligence documents, according to a report published Friday morning by London based newspaper Asharaq Alawsat.
According to the report, the missing Iranian general was carrying documents and maps of Iran's military and intelligence infrastructure as well as information regarding the relations between the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, Hizbullah and the Islamic Jihad.
'Iranian general may be key to Ron Arad'
In addition, the general was reported to possess information regarding the Iranian nuclear program as well as information about Iran's strategic military plans.
Meanwhile, Turkish newspapers reported that three Iranians disappeared in Turkey, following allegations that they attempted to smuggle missiles into Iran.
Turkish newspapers reported Friday morning that the three Iranians, who owned Turkish companies operating, disappeared late last year following their attempts to smuggle spare used missile parts to Iran.
Reportedly, the attempt to export American-made rocket pieces to Iran, was foiled when Turkish customs informed the US authorities of the sale.
Turkish newspapers reported that the three Iranians disappeared shortly after the incident, last December.
