:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Senior Taliban leader held in Pakistan
-Full Story-

Pakistani security forces have captured a high-ranking Taliban leader in the southwestern city of Quetta, a senior security official and Taliban sources said late Thursday

The capture of Mullah Obaidullah Akhund marked the first Pakistan arrest of a senior leader of the Islamist militia since it was driven from power in Afghanistan in 2001 when thousands of its fighters fled into Pakistan.

The security official and Taliban sources said Akhund, the third most senior member of the Taliban's 10-member leadership council, was arrested late on Monday, hours after a surprise visit to Pakistan by U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney.

The use of readily available chlorine to enhance or "dirty" their attacks is a disturbing change in tactics. As with any chemical weapon, its usage is highly dependent upon weather conditions and getting a high enough concentration. Definitely a model to be concerned about here with even a greater abundance of chlorine and availability.

Passenger carries rifle on plane (Slice of Life DownUnder NZ)

Passenger carries rifle on plane

NZPA
Sunday, 18 March 2007
Security measures on provincial airline routes are under the spotlight again after a passenger managed to carry a rifle on board a flight from New Plymouth and Auckland.

The man was only pulled aside after he landed in Auckland and was boarding another flight to Kerikeri.

He told authorities he had been allowed to carry the rifle on the earlier flight because the gun was broken.

Civil Aviation Authority spokesman Bill Sommer told the Herald on Sunday New Plymouth airline officers had ignored protocol and all guns were required to go in the cargo hold.

There are no formal screening procedures for flights in provincial New Zealand.

The latest scare comes after a Sikh priest was asked to hand over his religious dagger by a pilot after he boarded a plane from Auckland to Napier in January.

Jarnail Singh said the issue only served to highlight the racism his community faced in the post-September 11 world.

Jarnail Singh and a group of Sikh priests visiting from India got through security wearing their kirpans under their shirts at Auckland's domestic terminal without any problems and boarded their flight to Napier.

There is essentially no pre-flite security in provincial airports in NZ.

"Conferences to look at ‘threat‘ of Islam in NZ

By Lynley Smith of Challenge Weekly, New Zealand"
Special to ASSIST News Service

AUCKLAND, NZ (ANS) --

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Mr Dillner said many Muslims came to New Zealand to find a better life, but many others came with a “missionary zeal” to take over the country. Muslims may in future, for example, promote the idea of instituting the call to Islamic prayer in their neighbourhoods.

In many freezing works halal killing had become standard and a group of South Island farmers was considering starting up their own freezing works to avoid that religious practice.

“They are saying, ‘Why should New Zealanders bow to Islam?’ Islam has an agenda which is subtle and behind the scenes.”

The two-day conferences have a three-fold purpose; to educate Christians about Islam, to inform them of what is happening in the world in relation to Islam; and to equip the Church to reach out rather than put up walls against Muslims.

The conference will have a number of experienced speakers who have held Mosques and Miracles conferences twice in Australia and in South Africa last year.

Stuart Robinson
Dr Stuart Robinson, senior pastor of Crossway Church in Melbourne, worked for 14 years in South-east Asia with his wife, Margaret, and knows Islam intimately. His book Mosques and Miracles was the inspiration behind the tours.

Daniel Shayesteh

Dr Daniel Shayesteh is an Iranian who was involved in training the Hezbollah terrorist groups which operate in Lebanon, and supported the overthrow of the Iranian Government by Ayatollah Khomeini. Unfortunately he was aligned with the wrong political faction and found himself in prison awaiting execution. After a friend engineered his escape to Turkey he became a Christian.

“He knows the radical side of Islam,” said Mr Dillner. “He knows he is on a hit list. When he walks out the door to work each morning, he knows he may not return.”"

Kidnapped Reporter Saw Decapitation
ABC News ^ | Mar 19, 2007 | MARIA SANMINIATELLI

Posted on 03/19/2007 1:50:07 PM PDT by Ben Mugged

An Italian journalist held for two weeks in Afghanistan said after his release Monday that he saw his captors cut off the head of one of the two Afghans kidnapped with him and thought he would be next to die.

In an interview with RAI Tg3 News, Daniele Mastrogiacomo described a harrowing experience. "I saw him be decapitated," he said.

He said the kidnappers threw the Afghan to his knees and suffocated him in the sand as they cut his head off.

"Then they wiped the knife on his clothes. I was shaking. Obviously I thought 'it's my turn now,'" Mastrogiacomo said.

The fate of the other Afghan who had been accompanying the journalist was not immediately known.

In an earlier audio posted on the Web site of his newspaper, La Repubblica, Mastrogiacomo said he slept in 15 different prisons that were "as small as sheep pens." His hands and feet were chained, and he was made to walk for miles in the desert, he said.

Mastrogiacomo said knowledge of the support of his colleagues and countrymen gave him strength.

"I knew that Italy was supporting me and that was the only comfort in the most desperate moments, when I feared I was going to be killed at anytime soon," he said. "This is the most beautiful moment of my life."

Detainee Admits to Helping Orchestrate Embassy, USS Cole Attacks

By Donna Miles
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, March 19, 2007 – A detainee at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has admitted to helping orchestrate the bombings of the U.S. embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1998 and the USS Cole in Yemen in 2000.

The Defense Department today released the transcript of Walid Muhammad Salih bin Attash’s combat status review tribunal hearing, held March 12 at the detention facility. The tribunal was an administrative hearing to determine only if Attash could be designated an enemy combatant.

Attash is one of 14 high-value detainees who were transferred Sept. 6, 2006, to Guantanamo Bay from CIA custody. The CSRT hearings for these detainees are not open to media because of national security concerns, DoD officials said.

After hearing allegations against him, including his involvement in the Aug. 7, 1998, embassy bombing and the Oct. 12, 2000, attack on the USS Cole, Attash said he carried out “many roles” in the attacks.

Speaking through an interpreter, Attash said he met in Karachi, Pakistan, with the operator who carried out the embassy attack just hours beforehand.

“I was the link between Osama bin Laden and his deputy, Sheikh Abu Hafs al Masi, and the cell chief in Nairobi,” Attash said. “I was the link that was available in Pakistan.”

In that capacity, Attash said he supplied the terror cell “with whatever documents they need(ed), from fake stamps to visas, whatever, sending them from Afghanistan to Pakistan and individuals, cell members.”

The attack, conducted almost simultaneously with an attack on the U.S. embassy in Tanzania, left 213 people in Nairobi dead, including 12 Americans, and more than 4,500 wounded.

Attash heard evidence against him charging that he facilitated and participated in close-combat training in the Lowgar training camp in Afghanistan in late 1999. Graduates of the class reportedly met with bin Laden, who lectured about the operational details of the East Africa bombings.

The following year, Attash is alleged to have helped plan and carry out the attack on the USS Cole during a refueling stop in the Yemeni port of Aden. Seventeen U.S. sailors were killed and 39 others wounded.

Attash said he helped plan the attack, purchased the boat and explosives used, and recruited the people who conducted it. He said he was in Kandahar with bin Laden during the actual attack.

The detainee challenged details in the allegations against him, such as the allegation that a phone number stored in another captured terrorists’ cell phone directory was also in his; he claimed he had no phone. But overall, he agreed to the allegations.

The “facts of the operations are correct, and his involvements are correct, but the details are not correct,” the interpreter said.

Attash said he did not wish to correct the details.

The U.S. government established the CSRT process at Guantanamo Bay as a result of a June 2004 Supreme Court decision in the case of Salim Ahmed Hamdan, a former driver for Osama bin Laden who challenged his detention at Guantanamo Bay. Between July 2004 and March 2005, DoD conducted 558 CSRTs at Guantanamo Bay. At the time, 38 detainees were determined to no longer meet the definition of enemy combatant, and 520 detainees were found to be enemy combatants.

Attash’s tribunal followed the March 10 proceedings for Khalid Sheikh Muhammad, who admitted to masterminding the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks as well as the World Trade Center bombing in 1993.

Proceedings also were held March 9 for Abu Faraj al-Libi, an alleged senior al Qaeda member, and Ramzi bin al-Shibh, who is said to have helped Muhammad plan the Sept. 11 attacks. Neither of the two elected to be present for their tribunals.

18 Detained, Weapons Cache Discovered; Suicide Bomber Killed

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, March 19, 2007 – Coalition forces nabbed 18 suspected terrorists, discovered a weapons cache and killed a potential suicide bomber in Iraq over the past few days.

During operations targeting the al Qaeda in Iraq network and foreign fighter facilitators in Baghdad this morning, coalition forces detained 11 suspected terrorists. One detainee is an alleged improvised-explosive-device maker, military officials said.

Elsewhere in Iraq today, coalition forces captured three suspected terrorists in Ramadi, including another alleged IED maker responsible for attacks against coalition forces.

In Fallujah today, troops captured four suspects with alleged ties to an al Qaeda foreign fighter facilitation network.

South of Baghdad yesterday, paratroopers from Company D, 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, discovered a weapons cache. While patrolling the area, paratroopers discovered the cache, which contained 400 tank rounds, 50 130 mm mortars and three 60 mm mortars. An explosive ordnance disposal team detonated the weapons.

Iraqi soldiers from 3rd Brigade, 5th Iraqi Army Division, shot and killed a suicide bomber March 17 south of Shakarat. Coalition forces nearby reported seeing the suicide bomber running toward an Iraqi tactical checkpoint. When the bomber failed to obey several verbal warnings to stop, the Iraqi soldiers shot him, causing the vest to detonate. This was the second suicide bomber incident in two days in the Diyala province, military officials said.

"The terrorists are now seeing and experiencing the effectiveness of the Iraqi security forces," said Army Col. David W. Sutherland, commander of 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, and the senior coalition officer in Diyala province.

"This is why we are seeing an increase on audible attacks, attacks that are attempting to create fear within the local population,” he said. “I applaud the (Iraqi troops) whose vigilance and attention prevented those suicide bombers from achieving their targets. Those are the actions of a professional force, which is helping gain the support of their people.”
