The Politics of Self-Pity (Kerry's wallowing in it)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | February 28, 2007 | James Taranto

"A Senate hearing that began with glowing tributes to a St. Louis businessman and his qualifications to become ambassador to Belgium turned bitterly divisive Tuesday after he was criticized for supporting a controversial conservative group," the Associated Press reports from Washington:

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., grilled nominee Sam Fox about why he donated $50,000 to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth during the 2004 presidential race. . . . "Might I ask you what your opinion is with respect to the state of American politics as regards the politics of personal destruction?" Kerry asked near the end of the hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

[Snip]

This is the second time this week that "the politics of personal destruction" has come up; the first, as we noted Monday, was when Sen. Hillary Clinton, attempted to impose a rule that no one was to discuss the impeachment of her husband and the illicit sexual acts attendant to it.

[Snip]

Kerry no doubt genuinely feels the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth treated him unfairly. It's even possible that they did; 40 years after the fact, we certainly can't say for sure that their eyewitness accounts were true and Kerry's was false. He also seems to feel that this cost him the presidency, which he deserved.

But life is unfair, and you don't become president because you "deserve" to, but because the voters choose you. Maturity consists in significant part in the ability to accept loss and to rise above it. That Kerry is still wallowing in self-pity more than two years after the fact tells us something damning about his character.

Agreed. And it tells me everything I need to know about the majority of the people of Massachusetts that they send Tweedlescum and Tweedlescummer to the Senate.

Of course I live in California, and, uh, you know, glass houses....

What was Kerry's opinion of the "politics of personal destruction" during Rathergate?

Hypocritical probably doesn't do it justice.

"This guy is going to go off like a firecracker, he is out of control"

I agree. He lives in his self created Walter Mittie phony world with his ego far, far surpassing the real loser he is.
One of these days he's going to shoot off his nasty,reckless mouth in the presence of someone who is going to be quite angered at the comments and drop him, right then and there.

What ever happened to the law suit he threatened the Swift Vets with? If it's all unsubstantiated, why isn't he in court with the "truth"?

Lantern Face is a pathetic mess...I mean he's a traitor...to his own country. I can't believe this loser is still a senator...he should be in a federal prison...his day of reckoning just ain't that far off...

Am I confused, or is it tacky to bring a personal issue with the nominee into these hearings? It would have been much classier if another committee member had brought the issue up for him.

I'm sure that is among the things John Francois was hoping we'd forget about, along with his promise to sign his F-180 form. He claims the Swift Vets lied about him. Well, J.F., lies told in written form are called libel and it's actionable. I'm sure several law firms can't wait for your call.

Self-pity?

Dreary SKerry

seems to

wallow in it;
bathe in it;
spew it;
clothe himself in it;
put it on as make-up;
spray his hair with it;
apply it as aftershave;
fondle it as an obsessive hobby;

. . .
